CHIAKI NANAMI: Character Analysis 

I have a theory that the reason Chiaki always says "I think" at the end of her sentences is because she has to. She's a program made to guide the group and perhaps there were supposed to be puzzles or riddles in the island before the killing game started. Being like a teacher, she wasn't allowed to give the answer to the students and instead just giving hints, maybe Junko used this part of her programing to avoid to helping in trials. Except Chiaki found a loophole that made her statements count as suggestions or "hints" to her coding, which was saying "I think" at the end of her sentences as if implying it's just an opinion. Though it's just a fun headcanon I have.

The joy I got of seeing chiaki and her interaction with hajime in the anime is something I can not even quantify....

I think another flaw of both Chiaki is her pessimism regarding ultimate talents. she seems to think if you have an ultimate talent, you have no control over what you can do with your life. However a character like Leon contradicts this by quitting baseball and aspiring to be a musician.

I think people don't look into her enough they just automatically love her or find her annoying and for me I love her because she is a comfort character but I think especially in the anime you see a kind of sad and lonely side to her giving more depth that people often don't consider

Chiaki is the closest we have to a "big good" in narrative terms in Danganronpa. (I don't count Makoto since he's the main character) Basically she represents the argument to Junko's entire ideology, even moreso than Makoto I'd argue, and it's intentional. If Junko represents pure despair, Chiaki represents pure hope. The difference between Makoto and Chiaki is that Chiaki represents hope, whereas Makoto actually spreads it, if that makes sense. I think this was an intentional connection given that at the end of Danganronpa 2, this theme was turned on its head, when in fact Makoto failed to give Hajime hope, and instead Chiaki stepped in and filled in that role for him. Basically Chiaki, what she represents in the story is the antithesis to Junko. Makoto on the other hand is the vessel for that antithesis, as opposed to being that thing himself.

Here's something I think is interesting: Junko's execution for Chiaki in real life was being pierced through spears after being betrayed by the person who trusted a lot. Junko may have intentionally done this to foreshadow Mukuro's death where she gets stabbed with spears and gets betrayed by the person she loved the most, Junko. Additionally, A.I Chiaki's execution is based on Junko's execution in the real world, where they both get crushed by something rectangular and heavy. Chiaki's deaths foreshadow the deaths of the Despair twins themselves.

THANK YOU FOR THIS ANALYSIS! Especially with Chiaki's controversy of being a Mary Sue. It's good to see these character analysis come back, since Chiaki's I'd say was long overdue. Hopefully we get to see more in the future as I really enjoy these! Keep at it Weeby!

I'm really glad how you touched up upon the problem that Class 77-B has in the anime. I have such a hard time seeing them as close friends when they barely share any interactions with each other. It makes the scene where they all turn to despair feel really underwhelming, like they all only cared about Chiaki instead of each other.

I'm glad these videos are back! I also love the new sprite you use to talk, it looks awesome! I love Chiaki so much, both A.I and human, and I agree with you on how the whole brainwashing thing from the anime is not implemented well, seeing how we never really get to see the 77th class bond. That might also be why I personally prefer Future Arc over Despair Arc, because I noticed much more how rushed Despair Arc was in comparison.

I think part of the problem with the Despair arc is that it was presented as being from Chisa's perspective. Even though not all of it is this way, it's because of this that we had that time skip rather than seeing Chiaki bonding with the rest of the class, and helping them to bond with each other. 20:06 I think the reason why she doesn't come up with a strategy is because Chisa is in grave danger and she probably believes they don't have enough time to come up with one (plus there's the stress of the situation). Also she probably believes that with all of them together they can over come anything. Or at least that's what I think.

16:26 You make a good point, but I think the crew behind the anime really did want it to be more fleshed out and well paced with more episodes, but they didn't have the budget to do so and because of that they had to work with what they had. Or at least that's what I think.

Actually, in my opinion Chiaki has another weakness that is thinking that when you have a certain talent , your fate is already decided and there is no orther choice. This is evidence in both Chiaki Human Chiaki: " It doesn't really matter whether you have talent or not. That's cuz, that isn't the end goal. You have greater freedom than we do. All I have are games. But you can go anywhere, and become anything." Pay close attention to this saying, although it sounds true at the beginning, the latter part "You have greater freedom than we do. All I have are games. But you can go anywhere, and become anything." Showing that she seems to prefer being like Hajime and is somewhat negative about having a talent. AI Chiaki is pretty obvious: " Even if you want to fly, you can't, right? Even if you want to swim where you please, you can't right? It's the same for me....Due to the nature of my existence, I will never be able to betray the Future Foundation..." Although some people will say that it implies Chiaki is an AI, but in my opinion it has another meaning, because both think that what they were born for cannot be changed, in Human Chiaki case is the fact that she has a talent. (This part is up to each person's opinion). I think it's quite ironic that the advice Chiaki gave to Hajime, which had so much influence on him, wasn't completely true.Fortunately it seems that in the end only the true part in the advice is shown, and the rest of Chiaki's initial line is not mentioned. I watched it again and saw: Al Chiaki in chapter 6: Having talent isn't the goal. There's something much more important than whether or not you have talent, right?...What's important is that you believe in yourself" and by Hajime in the danganronpa 3 animation " It doesn't really matter whether you have talent or not. Because, That's isn't the end goal." Regarding this part, i think there has been a change since not only Hajime's memories affects AI Chiaki but also everyone, because of the idea that life is not only about talent Chisa said the same "There's more to life than just talent. Interacting with others will build character and help you make memories. Let's help make something more important than talent shine-Your Hope"-----Chisa. Come to think of it, Chisa influenced the class a lot, especially Chiaki. Edit: This is just what I noticed, I'm not sure if I read too much. My English is quite bad so i may made some mistakes, hope you will understand

This is the first proper analysis video on Chiaki as a whole and I say you did a good job on it! Both Chiaki's, AI and Human, are excellent characters (although the latter is trapped in an anime that leaves much more to be desired) with shocking amount of depth to them. This video is also nice that it disproves the notion that Chiaki is a "perfect girl" that she does have character flaws. What I personally find most interesting about Chiaki, aside from her personal impact on me, is how much subtlety is to her character. Like, in DR2, you can see her getting more and more distraught over murders that happen. She does have emotions, just that she's more on the quieter side. She's also responsible for the most memorable moments in the game.

In the end, both DR2 Chiaki and DR3 Chiaki are two different beings but act in a similar way. One is a more emotional human, other one is a much calmer AI Also, can't wait to see my boy Great Gozu having his character being analyze for 40+ minutes with extreme detail

The Despair Arc frustrates me since I don't see any way for the class to rescue their teacher which is odd because Junko will always leave an opportunity for failure so she can experience despair. But then, it is a prequel so she has to obviously win.

I love that these videos are coming back! They help me understand Danganronpa a little better and catch some details that I had not noticed before. You make these characters much more interesting! I like the fact that you insisted on Chiaki not being a Mary Sue, and focused on her potential arcs. I would have loved to see Chiaki's POV during all of SDR2, having the secret mission of saving all of her friends and watching it slowly fail tragically. And imagine if she was still human, with feelings and fear of potential death. Chiaki's despair would be as gut-wrenching as interesting to see. Also, I'd love to point out that it's okay too if a character doesn't seem to have any flaws at first glance! A character could be just likeable and be as interesting and enjoyable as the rest. ps: i'd love an ishimaru analysis, i feel like he has lots of layers that are very interesting to explore :)

I think Chiaki in the Neo world being so “flawless” and a “Mary Sue” actually elevate her character given that she is the only one who isn’t real. It never bothered me. If anything it made me like her more since I didn’t have a strong opinion on her before that reveal.

I wonder if Danganronpa S and UTDP Chiaki was written to be like human Chiaki she seems way more energetic in S but I remember in v3 she was more like her ai counterpart

Chiaki is an amazing character in my opinion and has a lot of depth even though it’s hard to see it.

A part of me died when I had to watch both Chiakis deaths..Chiaki was one of the first comfort characters I had whether human or IA, the analysis was amazing it was worth the wait..

Al chiaki admits that she is not good at reading emotions but she never is shown to be a flaw I mean she communicate with everyone just fine she doesn't do any mistake . She says she can't read people's emotions but she helps everyone emotionally just fine with no struggle she knew what to with akane in chapter 5 she knew how to comfort hajime. Real chiaki was awkward socially but her transformation from being a loner to being a class rep was so quick and forced. Besides we don't see chiaki struggle to talk with the group we don't see chiaki having a hard time asking the group play with her. A marysue has a deeper definition than just being flawless even though chiaki is indead flawless but the deeper definition of a marysue is that a character has a forced writing this character can have flaws , weakness and even character development but it won't matter if the character has forced writing.

I actually felt sick when I saw chiaki’s death in the anime. It was such a repulsive death for such a pure character that it nearly made me throw up. Couldn’t think about anything else for days.

16:32 well that's what you get when cram 2 separate stories arcs in 11-12 episode lengths Honestly, this wouldn't have been a problem if Future arc was a game and Despair arc was the 24-episode long anime.

One of the problems of Chiaki is kinda weird but...I dislike the fact that they tried to make her as important as in the game. Yeah, I know it is plot-dependant, and that there would not have a lot more of explainations of why was Chiaki chosen to become an AI, but they just had to take a step back and to change few traits of Chiaki in Danganronpa 3 to make her become a character that we would like. Or maybe they just have to increase her screen time, like as she said, her social awkwardness, but that's not that bad, because I really like IRL Chiaki compared to her AI version. I think what makes Danganronpa characters interesting is their emotions (Mahiru, Mondo, Tenko) or their personality (Byakuya, Kokichi). That's the reason why I think characters like Kirumi or Kyoko are nice at first glance, but they are missing something...and AI Chiaki is missing both. So yes, Chiaki is a nice character, but she has done nothing which really caught my eye, because none of what she has done really was likeable...from my point of view, OBVIOUSLY !

This is an excellent analysis! I dismiss when people charge a character with being a "Mary Sue", since more often it means "main character who is female" or "competent female character" than any actual criticism. And as you nicely dissected, even her idealized AI version has serious flaws that stem from her AI nature & reflects the rose-tinted memories of her friends more than who she was (I would argue that AI!Chiaki is a more proactive character than human!Chiaki is, cuz she has to grow into it via Chisa's absence). And yeah, a LOT of that does stem from DR3 being weirdly rushed & not prioritizing the emotional beats as much as they should have.

This is actually the first time I’ve ever seen a *good* Chiaki character analysis video.

Glad to see the series has made a return :3 I would love to see a character analysis of Shuichi Saihara, particularly focusing on aspects such as the protagonist contrast between him and kaede, how his judgement is clouded by the 2 themes of V3 being truth and lies, how his character develops and matures through the death of kaede, kokichi and the discovery that he is a fictional character, how Keebo appears to be the more heroic like archetype that resolves the final chapter and how this reflects on Shuichi, showing he isn't a perfect character or some Mary Sue who fixes everything, and possibly any opinions you have on his character such as his flaws or any symbolic representation or themes you noticed that appealed to you. Just some suggestions, obviously I'm not trying to tell you how to write your analyses. I loved your video and the insight you provided on one of my favourite killing harmony characters. Keep up the amazing content ^^

WAKE UP BABE NEW WEEBY NEWZ CHARACTER ANALYSIS JUST DROPPED

Chiaki's... an interesting one. Granted, DR2 is the least I've really thought about and analysed out of the main games, and the anime I only watched once, but I have a really weird relationship with her. Like, I love the character in DR2, but I feel like the anime muddies things needlessly? Like, Kodaka mentioned he created the human Chiaki because the way she talked and acted in the final chapter when she came back felt different, and seeing your explanation I think I get what he meant, but I honestly still don't really feel like it was necessary? Like, I feel like because she's an AI, people assume she must be limited, but people are ALWAYS underestimating AIs in Danganronpa. She has limitations, but to me a big thing with her character is overcoming them to finally help like she wants to, ultimately being able to reveal herself even if she needs Hajime's help. I think because I love the idea of this AI character discovering herself and learning to feel and care beyond just her programming all that, that's why I find the whole "actually the AI based itself on a real person" thing really weird to me. Like, to me it makes Chiaki LESS interesting that she just based herself on a real person instead of being an AI created by Chihiro who's her own being without any further influence than her AI. Also, the fact that out of universe, the clearly designed her to resemble Chihiro in various ways and made a point that she's basically his "daughter" only to then have a real person in-universe with almost identitcal traits... it's one hell of a coincidence. Is Chiaki Chihiro's cousin or something? :v Anyway, I just find this all really weird and confusing, and I feel like it muddies DR2's backstory. Like yes, the DR games always retroactively add stuff into the past about stuff like the Tragedy, but I feel like something like "Chiaki Nanami was a real Hope's Peak student and part of Class 77" feels like vital information that should have been in that game that just... isn't (same with Ryota). I definitely think you summarised the issues with the anime well too, it's just basically a greatest hits for Class 77 without ant real substance, and glossing over deeper characterisation meant people accuse Chiaki of the trite "Mary Sue" character (I'm glad you debunked that too BTW, I feel like it's such a lazy criticism people just throw out when they don't know how to articulate themselves better, not to mention how much more people use this against female characters vs male ones who get away with just as much shit). The thing with Chiaki and a lot of her traits being construed as as result of her being AI is also kind of interesting for me because being Autistic myself, as much as you can construe these traits as AI stuff, they resemble what you see in a lot of Autistic people really closely? Like, the whole "buffer" thing is something I experience for REAL when talking to people for one, like my brain struggles to process information in a smooth way. And of course the classic traits like social awkwardness, the logical and literal mindedness and emotions not being natural to her to the point where she isn't always sure of what she feels or thinks (I wonder if some of it could even be seen as alexithymia, something that occurred to me after SDRA2 cuz of stuff you'll eventually see). She even has her special interest/hyperfixation with gaming. Not really going anywhere with this besides the fact that I guess a lot of common Autistic traits end up in robot/AI characters, like the things people often associate with them are things often seen in us. I don't know if "coding" a character has to be intentional or not, but if not then I'd argue Chiaki is very Autistic coded, regardless of if she's AI or not (I think her human self is similar enough for this to hold up even if you point out the absence of certain traits). Anyway, to end things on an... amusing(?) note, have some more trivia: apparently Kodaka made Chiaki the way she was is because he basically designed her as his ideal girlfriend. To directly quote the interview, "A girl who’s shy, plays retro games, sweet, and has big boobs" is not just Chiaki, but Kodaka's type. If she seems like "waifu bait" as you described the accusations, it's probably because she's Kodaka's ideal waifu, LOL.

I'm so happy you made another DR analysis! I've never been a fan or her, but I appreciate the video. That being said, I don't think being unable to protect the group counts as a flaw. Not only that's a requirement for the plot to move forward, but it's also never acknoledged in the story. It seems more like a writing mistake than a character flaw. AI Nanami is pretty flawless, but I wouldn't call her a Mary Sue. Anime Nanami was totally one (or a Canon Sue, if you want to get technical). I mean, Junko herself considered her so important that her mere death would drive all her classmates to despair. Kuzuryuu especially, who became a terrorist not because of the death of his sister but because of the death of Nanami. But you raised a good point about her naivety being an actual flaw, so maybe the title of Canon Sue is too much for her. Well done!
