Chiasmus is the A-B-B-A order of words or phrases. Often in Latin this is represented with different bits of grammar, like the placement of verbs and nouns. Latin also uses chiasmus with adjective-noun combinations. With chiasmus, what's fair is foul and foul is fair.

The visualisation of cave created by this ABBA word order is simply stunning! These Roman writers are genius!

Mirabile. Only a teacher of ancient languages could give such a good explanation.

Wish I'd been taught to recognize that in Latin class. We learned what it was I'm pretty sure, but never more than that.

If you've ever studied the Old Testament, the same concept exists there. It and a related literary device known as parallelism are the two main standard literary devices in Hebrew poetry, such as the Psalms, Proverbs, and Ecclesiastes, as well as in many of the prophetic writings of Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel.

Antimetabole is the exact repeat of two sets of words, but in reverse order? During the time of the English poet, English lost its endings. So, this might be chiasmus too.

Is there somewhere I can find a complete list of these types of word orders for Latin, or at least more of them?

There's really only one more: synchysis, or interlocking word order (A-B-A-B). Also check out what's called a golden line.

Awesome video, as always. I have a quick question about learning, could you answer, please? So I did a cards with Latin word on one side and with translation on the other. But the words I'm learning are coming from my speech. I mean I'm adding those words I now need and I learn them. Will it better to learn common words such as: left, right, body, cloud, sky first and then learn more complicated words? And does it matter much if I learn nouns first and then adjectives or verbs, for example? All it all is u to me and doesn't matter? Thanks.

It shouldn't matter as long you have a solid book or course to supply you with reading practice. Words with different usage rates will be balanced anyway after some time.

3:31 Why is sagittifera pharetra not in accusative? It's a motion 'out of'.
@cornmono3665
@cornmono3665 6 лет назад
Accusative is motion towards. "Out of" is ablative or sometimes even genitive, which is a Greek thing to do.
