This is heartbreaking to watch. They all said cancel this show. He said no. The money has been spent. The hands have been shook. Bernard Edwards was sick before the concert started...sicker than he was willing to admit. He was grossly underweight...dehydrated from all the vomiting in the hotel room and now from under all those lights and speakers and fighting shortness of breath..The man should have been on a plane back home after leaving a hospital IC ward on an antibiotic IV drip with the walking pneumonia he had. But he's out there pulling literally on whatever is left. Stage managers got all monitors on him and nervous as hell. A back up bass man is warming up and nervous. Everyone on that stage was anxious but had a job to do and the man that signed their checks said do it. Nile's eyeing him the whole time while hitting the solos. Bernard's solo was on auto pilot and towards the end, he played holding himself up by leaning against the equipment. MAN! Was it that important to him? When commitment reconciles with the resolute acceptance of death...you play on even if its irrational. There is one way to be born and a hundred ways to die. Bernard knew... and he chose his passion...one can only marvel at what motivates men like Edwards...you could not ask for a better departure than to leave this world in your sleep after a final night of blessing the world with your gift. It didn't have to be the best of times...or the worst. The gift Edwards shared was simply...good times.
Wow Alyssa! Beautifully well spoken words! Very much my sentiments too. Yes I read about what happened that night. He was such a great person. That bass lives on forever. Mr. Bernard Edwards. Thanks Alyssa
The last concert featuring the awesome core of Niles, Bernard, Tommy Thompson, and the girls..... This was Chic, and they made disco funky... Nard and Tony will be missed greatly.
Bernard Edwards was... no IS the best ! Nile Rodgers too, they are the beginning of music (Madonna, duran Duran, David Bowie, etc...) they've invented music, groove and feeling. Nobody can stay on his chair when he's listenning to this, that is THE groove !!!! Chic forever !!!!!!!!
if u grew up with, had the needle on again and again and again.. There was no mobile phones, no net, no device (slave) to manage ur day.. I'm sorry ur oldschool.. These WERE the good tymes Ur oldschool
It's Christmas 2015 and I remember how hearing Bernard's funky/solid bass way back in 1980 made me pick up the bass and never want to put it down. Miss you Brother...psk
God was good to this man, Bernard Edwards. He didn't collapse on stage. He was allowed to finish the show , spend time with his friends, and pick his place to lay his head on the hotel room couch. That was it. Nile got the maid to open the door the following morning and found him there undisturbed...like he was sleep. What was he thinking about that night you just watched while he was bringing joy to people with his music? I can tell you what he wasn't thinking about. The stuff in life we all think is so important like money and bills and what people think of us and...money. All Bernard wanted is what he received...strength. Strength to finish. He met his obligation as a professional and his audience more than halfway while we yet fumbled for words to describe the mystery that drives men like that captain of the bass named Bernard Edwards. The only gift sweeter than the music he gave us was the one God gave him by taking from this place to his place on the vehicle of sleep.
¿Quién como tú, se ha dejado la piel en el escenario? Nadie debe olvidar, jamás, al genio que murió con las botas puestas : Ladies and Gentlemen . . . Mr. B E R N A R D E D W A R D S ! ! !
What a groove. Nile is superb on guitar and Bernard shows a masterclass in bass playing. Add on top great vocals by Sylva and Jill and Chic are really cooking here. Sadly Bernard's final show but even though he was very ill he still played his heart out.
God Bless Bernard Edwards. I hope you are in an awesome place. You got yanked off the planet too soon. You are the same age as my dad. I wield a Fender Jazz in your honor. May you know only Joy and Peace, buddy. God loves you dude.
For fuck sake stop watching this video...I know its hard, but scroll down and listen to this blind. The groove here is flawless all day long, every note is perfection, from 3:12 to 3:44 is just jaw dropping in its subtlety...G...
High School memories. There was a 1978 snowstorm. Schools were closed except for the seniors they let in to finish their shop projects on time for the upcoming craftsman's fair. Many brought their huge beatbox radios. One of the many good times we were allowed. We all turned to the same radio station and placed assorted boxes in the hallways on the chance this would play. It did along with "Slide" by Slave. To hear good times in the concrete caverns of the school hallways ! The principal did us one better. He turned on the intercom ! You don't find this experience and those principals anymore.
What a show, great song , Niles as cool as ever, Silva's,brilliant vocals, an injection of Slash magic, and Jill Jones, surely the sexiest woman on the planet roll over Angelina, Your not in her league. How did Slash hold it together with Silva and Jill all over him.So sad to lose Bernard after such a brilliant performance but what an epitaph.
Thanks for posting this version, it's really awesome and it really helped me confirm things about living in the moment...we just never can count on tomorrow. He was awesome.
The bass line Bernard laid down in this cut has to be one of the baddest. It's been sampled (numerous times) by other artists. And I totally agree with Mr. Ginsel - Bernard IS one of the most influential bassists in history. He was (and still is) one of my influences!
