Jimi Hendrix said that Terry Kath was a "better" guitarist than he (Hendrix) was. It's sad that both were taken too young to share the stage to weave their fire together.

The original 7 were all stand out musicians. Cetera's bass compliments Kath so well in this song. Add in Lamb's songwriting skills and Serafin's drumming and you have the pieces for a hall of fame line up. Then you add that horn section and it becomes a whole different animal. Tragic that after Kath died this became a ballad band. Probably kept them out of the HoF for 2 decades.

The indomitable Terry Kath. Gone far too soon. Musicians who master their craft, playing becomes instinctual. With an almost symbiotic connection with their instrument and when you're plugged in, it's game on. Their our babies, are partners in crime. Through the bad and the good. Every time you open that case, it's like a reunion with old dear friend. Great reaction Mo! Loved it, RNB

Hi, you have just watched probably the best live performance of this classic song, with an epic guitar solo by one of the most underrated guitarists in the history of rock music, Terry Kath. As I’m sure someone has already mentioned, Jimi Hendrix went to see them play at a club on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood early in their career (when they were still called Chicago Transit Authority) and he went up to the sax player and related how good the band sounded, then he asked who the guitarist was and said “He’s better than me”! Jimi also said that he’d love to do an album with them sometime, but he passed away before they could get together. Unfortunately, Terry Kath also died young at 31 y/o in 1978 due to a gun accident. He was fooling around with a handgun he owned at a party, pretending to play Russian roulette, and he assured people that the gun was unloaded, but he forgot to check the chamber which had one round and when he pulled the trigger, he shot himself in the head.

That was at the Whisky A Go-Go. Chicago was coming out of the dressing room for the second set and in the hall was Jimi Hendrix. He said to them, "You guys have a horn section that sounds like one set of lungs and a guitar player that's better than me! You wanna go on the road?" And Chicago Transit Authority agreed to become his opening act on tour. Trumpet player James Pankow told of that meeting in an interview that's on RU-vid.

Mo -- let me say how refreshingly unusual I find it, for a (assuming under-25) Nigerian to be so entertained by mid- and early-70's rock as you've been! As I have mentioned, I'm married to a Yoruba woman and know dozens and dozens of Nigerians and have been to Lagos about 5 or 6 times. I don't know ANY who enjoy this music like you (and I) do, even when they're in my age bracket (50-60). It's all disco and pop and sometimes funk (which is cool but I hate disco and tolerate pop). Oh and of course they love Sunny and Fela and Obey and all the greats of Naija music 🙂 but it's so hard to come together with them on stuff like this. I appreciate your amazing facial expressions and the joy you exude on some of these old songs. It really warms my ancient heart.

As a guitarist of 48 years I can tell you that you do develop a muscle memory for where the notes are. Pianists do as well but they have the advantage of the keys being all the same size. On a guitar, each fret is slightly narrower than the one above it so they get kinda small towards the high notes. But guitarists use hand positions so they may have to peek if they're moving a long way up the fretboard. But once your hand has found the correct fret, you can feel the rest with your eyes closed.

The main guitarist was Terry Kath, who was a beast on the guitar and was reputedly Jimi Hendrix' favorite guitarist. Sadly several years after this performance, Terry Kath would die by accidentally shooting himself while "playing Russian roulette." I loved your reaction to this iconic performance of this great song!
@DanielFrost21
@DanielFrost21 Год назад
It wasn't a game of Russian Roulette per se. Terry was foolishly playing around with what he thought was an unloaded gun because there was an empty clip. However, he wasn't aware there was a round in the chamber.

"Russian Roulette"?? with a semi-auto 9mm? nope, not how it works.
@bostonvair
@bostonvair Год назад
@@DanielFrost21 Wikipedia cleared up the details, so you are correct, though it's a bit of a technicality (which is why I put "playing Russian roulette" in quotes. According to Wikipedia: "Kath enjoyed target shooting and by 1978 was regularly carrying guns.[41] Around 5:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time on Monday, January 23, after a party at the home of roadie and band technician Don Johnson, in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California, Kath began to play with his guns. He spun his unloaded .38 revolver on his finger, put it to his temple, and pulled the trigger. Johnson warned Kath several times to be careful. Kath picked up a semi-automatic 9-mm pistol and, leaning back in a chair, said to Johnson, "Don't worry about it ... Look, the clip is not even in it." His last words were, "What do you think I'm gonna do? Blow my brains out?"[37] To calm Johnson's concerns, Kath showed him the empty magazine. Kath then replaced the magazine in the gun, put the gun to his temple and pulled the trigger. Apparently, unbeknownst to Kath, the gun had a round in the chamber. He died instantly from the gunshot,[37] at the age of 31, eight days before his 32nd birthday."
@DanielFrost21
@DanielFrost21 Год назад

Just be sure you get the whole 14 minutes and not one of the cut-outs. Chicago never recorded a song called "Make me Smile" or "Colour My World". They are both 2 minute cut-outs from "Ballet" & they both hit the top of the charts. The Girls really loved "Colour My World". In January of 78, Terry was playing with a gun. He checked the clip and it was empty then he put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger. There was one round in the chamber. RIP 🙏

Okay, so, two things on the guitar that might interest you, in case nobody else elaborated yet... First, as I and probably others said, the bar hanging on the guitar that Mr. Kath tugs at is called a whammy bar. It basically is a lever to stretch the strings while you're playing it, and that gives you more range for the guitar to make sound beyond what it's tuned to. Second, and not sure it's visible on this one but probably... If you notice on the stage at their feet, you'll generally see a bunch of cables going to little boxes right at the base of the microphone... Those are foot pedals, and tied into the guitar so you can further alter the sound it makes, like the classic Cry Baby pedal.

Left to right the horns were a trumpet, a saxophone, and the long slidey horn I think you were referring to is a trombone. They were well and tightly played, and offered the sharp syncopated rhythm that caught your ear.

Hi, Mo. It looked like you definitely enjoyed the live performance. Great to see the joy in your smiles (yes, it does give you sore cheeks). Thanks for sharing another fantastic reaction video 👍🏽⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

If you want to see this done well live today. Then Leonid and Friends is worth checking out. They are a Chicago tribute band that meticulously reproduce this great music.

Love Chicago. The band came out of Dallas, Tx in the late 60s as part of the “Texas Big Horns” renaissance movement.
