When the smash Broadway revival of "Chicago" opened in 1996, Bebe Neuwirth was its Tony-winning Velma. In 2007, she rejoined the production to take on the role of Roxie. Neuwirth took on a third "Chicago" principal role in 2014, when she returned to the Broadway production to play Matron "Mama" Morton. "When You're Good to Mama," with Amra-Faye Wright as Velma. Yeah you kinda feel like she came from a mob family but wasn’t taken seriously as a woman so now she runs a woman’s prison like the mafia.

her characterisation is so on point; it's exaggerated but there's still a person there. every look and every gesture is perfectly timed; it's a masterclass in musical comedy acting

I had the great joy of seeing Ms. Neuwirth as Velma twice. I knew she trod the boards as Roxie but missed her turn as Mama. Thanks so much for keeping me in the know.

@@fab36254 that reminds of how fortunate I was to see her. My friend who saw her with me still talk about it 25 years later. For us, has become a synonym for theatrical perfection. Oh! And! We took a group of teenagers (I teach youth theatre) and she posed for pictures with the teens at the stage door post performance! So gracious!

It's probably to do with the fact that the role requires something different than Velma and even Roxie. Velma was a very soft almost talk sing style.
