After a 10-2 win over the Phillies and a complete game from Justin Steele seemed to build the momentum for the Cubs, they reminded everyone watching that they are a last place team. The Angels shut out the Cubs 7-0 at Wrigley Field on Saturday.
Pete Crow-Armstrong was still out of the lineup, Yency Almonte will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery, Kyle Hendricks exited the game early with lower back tightness, Mark Leiter Jr. should return to the ball club next week and Julian Merryweather will be starting a rehab assignment in South Bend soon.

Hayden Wesneski (2-5, 4.14 ERA) vs Jose Soriano (4-6, 3.77)

Unfortunately, no one on the Cubs team has an approach when they go to the plate. They flail. They swing at bad pitches. They take pitches down the middle. They make good pitchers on the other side look like Sandy Koufax. Do they have a hitting coach???

We got beat by a fantastic pitching performance. His out pitch was the first pitch and he did a great job of enticing guys to go for it. Then he was able to nibble at the zone and get some calls. This team is nothing to be ashamed of.

They didn't remind me, as I already knew that. Winning 2 games didn't mean that they are going to get better.

I had hope after the Suzuki throw out at home, and Nido's throw to second. Then even the defense looked bad.

Same here. It all unraveled with Brewer’s error on the double-play try.

I feel bad in saying this but, I hope The Cubs go on enough of a losing street to wash away any idea of being buyers at the trade deadline. We have so many holes and the amount of young talent we would have to give away to even make his marginally competitive could be catastrophic.

I don’t think a complete fire sale like they had in 2021 would be a wise idea. I would trade Ian Happ since Owen Caissie is close to being promoted. Happ’s the hottest hitter right now, so moving him makes the most sense. Jameson Taillon would be next. I like Taillon but his health has been an issue in the past and even though he’s pitching well now, we’ve seen stretches of inconsistency. So, trade him while he’s hot. I’d keep Cody Bellinger because they need his defensive flexibility and his offense, even though he’s not as hot as he was last year. Not every year is going to be an MVP season. The Cubs need to keep Bellinger until PCA can raise his offensive numbers. Seiya Suzuki has a no trade (as does Happ), so moving him, and Happ, may be tricky, but not impossible. I’ll be curious to see who Hoyer gets in return in any deal. The Cubs have areas they need to address immediately…third base and catcher…mostly catcher. To not fill those gaps would be a waste of trading anyone away at the deadline. As far as Dansby Swanson is concerned, it might be wise for him to step away from the game completely for a while, like Yu Darvish is doing currently in San Diego. Whether it’s that nagging knee issue or something personal, he looks distracted and his head isn’t in any of his at bats. Or, maybe he’s getting bad advice from one of the four, or all four, hitting coaches. Defensively, he’s done so much better than when the season started. I’m not ready to give up on him yet. Trading Swanson will be next to impossible because the Cubs would have to eat a majority of his contract for the next five years and that would tie their hands a little bit in the budget. And, generally, the Cubs don’t eat salary for that extended amount of time. If the Cubs haven’t been willing to eat the few months remaining in Hendricks and Smyly’s contracts, I doubt they’ll do that with Dansby Swanson. Plus, they’d have to find a team who would want him. And, I’ve never been a fan of trading one bad contract for another. I also want to see which coaches Counsell replaces over the winter. It’s the coaches job to prepare the players for every game and, so far, they just haven’t done it. Personally, I’ve always been frustrated with Tommy “Walks-R-Us” Hottovy, and I wanted to give Kelly and the rest of the hitting coaches the benefit of the doubt, but this seasons offense has been abysmal.

Swanson wasn't a good hitter when he was with Atlanta either

Yesterday's game killed me. I felt terrible for Kyle. The hp ump was AWFUL. The bullpen and the errors. The angels pitcher looked like Koufax 😢 Dansby looks lost at the plate. He has to try to hit to the opposite field and stop trying to pull

Why does Counsell continue to hit Wisdom 2nd in the lineup? Wisdom isn’t even a major leaguer; he’s batting .189 with 3 homers. Hey Craig, we all love seeing Hoerner get on base and Jed’s favorite player comes up second then wiffs every damn time. What a 🤡show.

I also wonder about the reason for hitting Wisdom second? Am I missing something cause I just don't get it?

Cubs are such a huge disappointment! Hoyer better be fired and most of this team needs to go! Swanson was a terrible move and Jed should be fired for that alone! Hoyer does not know Baseball!!!
