Hey everyone!
It seems like every year there's a team that collapses at the end of the season. This year that team was the Chicago Cubs. However, as unfortunate as this late-season collapse was, they were never expected to be a playoff team in the first place. So, how did they get to that position?

One other key concept that I feel like people overlooked during their September collapse was the absence of their two best closers Adbert Alzolay and Mark Lieter Jr., who were both on the IL in the final couple weeks of the season. The inconsistent bullpen, which was the culprit of so many of those one or two run loses early in the season, came back to bite them at the worst possible time as a result.

I can't help but compare this to the Cubs 2019 collapse. So similar, yet so different. Both teams had good playoff odds with a few weeks remaining, but both teams collapsed miserably. It was also so different because 2019 was built on a declining, end of era team, but 2023 was a team with a bright future ahead. As a Cubs fan, I can't wait to see what thew future has in store.

4:53 it's worth noting that Swanson's defense was absolutely in question heading into the season. the discourse on MLB twitter was that despite his Gold Glove season just prior, he seemed like a prime candidate for a massive regression a la Nicky Lopez and that he probably had the weakest defense tied with Bogaerts among the free agents. for the first 6 seasons of his career, he had merely been a good fielder. you usually dont get twice as good on defense overnight and expect it to stick. but against all odds, he replicated it. also funny that Belli became an everyday glove-first center fielder after years of being an inconsistent defender. it only took one season to completely turn that narrative around for him!

Great video! Nice to see my fellow Cub fan comments. Although winning it all in 2016 takes some of the sting away from the September collapse, it still hurts a bit. From a Cubs fan: How did I believe we collapsed? Well many things, Injuries and bad timing, We had a solid starting rotation with Hendricks returning and nobody would think Marcus Stroman’s first half was gonna be amazing, we had a solid bullpen but we lost some arms early on and would be sidelined until September, Bellinger and Gomes were carrying the offense but they were mediocre at best. Steele and Stroman carried the squad, being the 1-2 punch of the rotation. The second half, was a disaster. Even though we were red hot, we should’ve sold. Buying really did us no good since we never made it. But what happened was ever since London, Stroman’s ERA Skyrocketed and Smyly was giving up runs, forcing him into the bullpen. Assad really stepped up in the rotation and we had a good chance after sweeping the Rockies. But then when we went against Arizona, Colorado and Back to Arizona. What happened? 2-9. Getting swept by Arizona was the worst thing that could happen. Literally we fell apart the last month, we had injuries and bad luck. That’s all I can say.

Hindsight is 20/20. They were in line to make the playoffs, and were hot enough it made sense not to trade away.

Saying they should have sold is CRAZY. It matters to have the guys playing in meaningful games down the stretch and get valuable experience. Plus they still have one of the best farm systems in all of baseball. Was far more important to create a winning environment than to keep loading prospects when they're already a top system.

This is why they say that graphs and data is always not the full story. Injuries and other things like luck play a huge factor. Not having a good third basemen and a closing pitcher was a huge factor why the Cubs where not expected to make the playoffs. Then Stroman became very good at closing (especially for a reliver). The thrid base was a merry go round until the Cubs got Candelario. Then they both got hurt and the team started to slide. The offense couldnt stay at the peak offense capabilities. Same with the relivers luckily keeping balls in play. This became a massive unlucky storm to face a very tough last month of the year for the Cubs. Its unfortunate but its an amazing run.

The 2023 NL Central Race was wild to watch. The Cardinals immediately became a no-show team with 2 2022 MVP candidates. The Pirates led the MLB in wins at the beginning of the season. The Reds led the NL Central for some time as well. The Cubs while down 10+ games at one point mid-season decided to show up and then have a quick downfall. And the Brewers won the division just to get swept against Arizona. I wonder how all 5 teams will fare next year against each other. Anyone can win the division in my eyes, even the Cardinals.

I don’t think any late season collapse will ever top the ones by the 2011 Atlanta Braves and Boston Red Sox. For two teams to lead the Wild Card race in their leagues by 9 games at the beginning of September, then get knocked out of the playoffs on the final day of the regular season? That sounds like a sports movie script.

For reference 18 we lost game 163 and the WC game, on consecutive days, both at home, after being the NLs #1 seed basically the whole year 19 we were well on track to make the playoffs, then suffered a colossal losing streak in September, including a 4 game sweep at the hands of the Cardinals, every single game by 1 run, and with several 9th inning blown leads 20 we got swept by the bottom feeder Marlins in the expanded playoffs. Scored 1 run all series. 21 we were looking like a strong playoff team through 2 months, then completely collapsed, another lengthy losing streak including back to back losses vs Milwaukee where we blew a 7+ run lead. We then sold off the whole core, said goodbye to many of the most beloved players in franchise history all in 1 week, then sucked the rest of the year. 2023 was tame in comparison. Just had a regular late season collapse.

Those two Diamondbacks series seemed to just be too much to handle for them. No one expected the trio of Brandon Pfaadt, Zach Davies, & Ryne Nelson to sweep the Cubs but a reformed Dbacks bullpen bailed 2/3 of them out. The sweep of the Rockies felt like proof. It just felt like the Cubs couldnt get over those losses to the Dbacks and it affected their play in subsequent series. The Braves series was just the dagger.

A very fair look at the entire season, which puts their September failures into context. I hope they fix some of their problems and continue to improve next season. I'm looking for a new team. The Jays, by keeping their failed management team, and not dealing with the lack of professionalism among many of their players, need to implode and thus be forced to address their institutional weaknesses. Besides, management and ownership have demonstrated their contempt for the fans.

Thankfully, unlike 2018 and 2019, this collapse comes at a time when the team is on the upswing and wasn't even supposed to be in this position as late as July. Hopefully the Cubs can use some of the enormous prospect capital they've shaped into a top-5 farm system this offseason and get a big gun or two for the rotation, bullpen, and lineup. 2024 looks promising.

As a cub fan, the pirates are the only NL central team I genuinely feel sorry for given how screwed over they've been by bad ownership for so long. Perhaps the cubbies and the pirates will fight each other over the division title or wild card spot.

Nice front-end analysis. However, September collapse needed a lot more analytics. Music, video montages, and newspaper quotes don’t tell the story of how this team collapsed down the stretch. September collapse was historic and needs its own video.

The cubs collapse literally every year since 2016. As a Reds fan, this is very funny

I had zero expectations from the cubs this year. The playoff-run was a pleasant surprise. Maybe next year?

Nothing more brutal than being a mariners fan. Should’ve won both of the games we played against the cubs early on in the season and we wouldn’t have choked like the cubs did

As a Cubs fan for over 30 years now I've learned to always expect the worst that way when they inevitably fail I'm not too upset. Once they lost that first series to AZ I knew they weren't making the playoffs. I've seen this scenario play out too many times not to already know the outcome lol.

As a Braves fan, idk which series was more entertaining to watch, the June series against the Mets or the final week series against the Cubs?

I’m as big of a Cubs fan as you’ll find, but I fear that this year won’t exactly be a stepping stone for next season, especially if they lose Bellinger. The big thing that gets lost from this season is that the Cardinals, Mets, and Padres were all complete non-factors in the playoff race (though the Padres did make it slightly interesting at the end). I’m not sure what the future holds for any of those teams, but in the case of the team that most directly affects the Cubs, we simply cannot expect the Cardinals to once again be a bottom feeder in 2024 like they were in 2023. Since MLB went to a 162 game season, the Cardinals have only ever had back to back losing seasons once (and even that comes with a huge caveat as it was the 2 shortened seasons of 1994-95). Furthermore, 2 more wins would’ve made all the difference between the Cubs making it in with the team on the outside looking in being the now NL pennant winning Diamondbacks, you can pretty safely add 2023 to 2018 and 2019 as post-WS seasons that were huge missed opportunities that literally 1-3 more regular season wins would’ve been a world of difference.

The Cubs definitely chocked but so did my team, the enemy, The Reds. Both teams are ahead of schedule and have insane talent. The Cubs & Reds rivalry is going to be so fun to watch moving forward. I think these 2 teams will be making the NLC very interesting in the coming years. JUST DON'T SIGN SOTO!!! That's just not fair lol. Not to mention the Brewers going to the post season is such a waste!

With how good the Reds and Brew Crew were this year idk if they’ll make it next year. Especially because Brew Crew has the 2nd best Farm system and The Reds players are just going to get better.

I doubt the Cubs re-sign Cody Bellinger. The Cubs have money to spend, but Bellinger’s asking price will be likely north of Dansby Swanson’s deal, and you’ve got a VERY crowded outfield. Ian Happ and Seiya Suzuki are locked into the corners for a few years, on top of having PCA, Caissie and Alcantara due up next year. That’s already enough outfielders for a contender, and I highly doubt the Cubs move on from PCA, locking all 3 outfield positions, and no, Bellinger is not going to become a mainstay 1B.
