In this video I rode the CTA Brown Line "L" train from Wellington to Kimball and back, traveling on the Red-Purple Bypass on its first day of operation. Apologies for the at times very sunny return trip!
The Red-Purple bypass is a new section of track that allow the northbound Brown line trains to cross over the Red and Purple line tracks without interruption. It's like a dedicated left turn offramp, enabling increased rush hour traffic and passenger capacity.
In this video, I didn't get an outside train view of the bypass, but you can see it in action if you visit the Belmont station and stand at the Northernmost point of the platform.
You can learn more about the Red-Purple Bypass and the RPM project at the CTA's website: www.transitchi...

Thank you for this. I recently moved out of Chicago and back to my hometown after a year of school, and the Brown Line used to be my line of choice to get me to and from home, school, and work from Montrose to Sedgwick, and Chicago & Franklin. I haven't been coping very well since I'd left, to be honest, and this video scratched a very specific itch of nostalgia for me. Hope you can continue to enjoy the trains as much as I did.

In my experience, the phase changes in life are the most difficult periods of time, even if those phase changes are positive ones. My best wishes to you on finding your next phase and settling in. Being open and honest about your feelings as you are now can only help you make your transition. I'm sure it's especially hard to leave Chicago. It offers a way of life that you simply can't find in the vast majority of the country. You never know where you'll end up, you might be back someday - at least as a tourist!

In the days of (Jay) McMullan and Wife Jane (fun on Navy Pier), Bilandic (snowman), Ritchard J. (God save the king) I lived close to the Belmont station and could make it from the store on Michigan Ave. to the store around the corner on Broadway in less time than it took for an associate to get his car from the garage on Huron and drive up there. Hanging in Lincoln Park, running to Skokie, Old Town, Kennilworth, Austin by Madison, I was all over that place like a bad smell even after I moved to the west suburbs. A little nostalgic but glad I moved entirely out of the state in '08. I can eat all the fish I catch without worrying about having bad babies or worse from the pollution about the same time R.M. Daley said he would eat fish out of the Chicago river. Sad for his wife with cancer later. I returned last year on the way north on an Amtrak from St. Louis and caught a cab down to a store opposite Whole Paycheck on canal and didn't see one cab on the street to return back to Oligilvy (C&NW). Five less bars on the street than there was 30 years ago on Broadway and the Lake Shore Theater looked run down as there was something going on with some guy who tied one of his body parts into knots as a performance of some kind. The McDonalds bought the Pancake house property and built a replacement store from the right by that. All those years living near the Cubs Park and close enough to Soldier Field and I never went to a game. I got to see the Bears in person later before the '85 Bears and got to see Payton and many others after I got out of town. I'm glad to say I lived there and unless you have or do, you can't tell all the stories to people without doubt.

This was definitely needed as it can be a pain to transfer between the Purple and Brown Lines at Belmont
