2019 update version is now available!
Ride the Rails in Real-time: • CTA's Ride the Rails: ...
Ride the Rails in Time-lapse: • CTA's Ride the Rails: ...
The CTA has more than 224 miles of railroad tracks across Chicago and surrounding suburbs, serving the agency's eight rail lines. In an average weekday, there are about 2,200 train trips making stops at the system's 145 rail stations. For more than 100 years, the 'L' has offered a unique perspective of Chicago.
In the first-ever documentation of its kind, the CTA has created a real-time ride along the length of each rail line. Shot in HD, you can now experience the 'L' like never before from the vantage point of the rail operator. You can even transfer between lines.
Hop aboard, and enjoy the ride.

The red line: varied, modern stations and especially clean!!! Chicago is much nicer than NYC! Dear inhabitants, you can rightly be proud of your city! Greetings from Bavaria (Germany)!

Sorry to disappoint but no it's not clean or safe. I live here all my life and take this disgusting train everyday going to and from work. Why do you think it's from the operators view and not the riders? It's a moving homeless shelter on rails filled with people harassing you for EVERYTHING. Rape, murder, robbery, and assaults are everyday occurrences and cta does nothing. Human feces smeared over train cars and bed bugs from homeless that are so bad I've seen them crawling all over a guy as he slept. It's disgusting

In 1980s, I took "L" Dan Ryan (now red line) on way to my school and got off at Adams St. station everyday. I have noticed something is different now; projects are gone, the trains no longer go to and stop at Adams, Madison, Randolph stations in downtown, then west side to Oak Park...Oh well, I live in Minnesota, and already miss my hometown Chicago. Anyway, I enjoy the ride again while I watch the video. :)

In 1993, they CTA did a realignment with the Green and Red Lines. The Red Line, originally the 95th/Lake line, was realigned after Cermak/Chinatown, to go through the subway and north all the way to Howard. The Green Line, originally the East 63rd/Howard or Ashland/Howard line was realigned to continue elevated over the Loop after 35th/Bronzeville and then continue west along Lake. This finally gave the CTA a direct South to North line in the Red Line.

Rywee M I never had any problems when I was in Chicago. I knew what areas to stay away from, so I never had to worry about it. I heard a few gunshots a few times but I was never worried. The media blows things way out of proportion, and we should all know that by now.

I spoke to quite a few people in Chicago, as we had passed through on the train to Florida from Minot, North Dakota. So many people love the city of Chicago. It was neat to see the video. We only have 10 people in our hamlet. I love the trains. They were featured in the Fugitive movie as well.

Maybe not the most interesting of the "Ride the Rails" videos, but probably the longest and straightest. The first part is the best study of the vanishing point one could ever hope for. So its easy to stare at and lose yourself in the moment. And a nice long piece to have playing on the second monitor while one is doing work on the first one. Thanks, C.T.A.

most LRT trams can go 50 mph, but often the track conditions and environment doesn't allow it. These CTA trains supposedly go up to 55 mph and it's quite obvious from the footage that they rarely get to those speeds. They're by no means fast trains, nor way faster than a tram.

I was on one of the Chicago subways once (can't remember if it was State Street or Milwaukee-Dearborn - it was a few blocks from the Greyhound bus station and Union Station), and the way the tracks on the underground sections were laid out - half-ties embedded in concrete with a drainage ditch in the center, plus the dimensions of the roadbed as I saw in cross-section drawings in various engineering journals - was very much copied from the New York subway, especially the IND. But then, the State Street subway was built in the 1938-43 period, in which time period the Sixth Avenue line was being finished, and work on extending the Fulton Street line to Broadway-East New York and beyond was being readied (but in the case of Fulton Street, not finished until after WWII - like Milwaukee-Dearborn). This, from a native New Yorker.

People should buy my "Impact" a James Grider novel on Amazon so I can afford to live in a place with winter. It would be droll to write that a locomotive derailed before a bridge, flew off an embankment and perfectly landed on the subway tracks with the wheels on the rails. People should break the security cameras at the stations to return privacy back to the 1980's level. Someone should not be a pussy and hop down on the tracks, then climb back on the platform. I wish I had a house with a deck facing out onto an elevated subway track. James Grider would shoot paintballs at the trains passing by.

Blue is longer by far. Blue takes between an hour and 10 minutes and an hour and 20 minutes to get from Forest Park to O'Hare. Red takes between an hour to an hour and 8 minutes to get from 95th to Howard and this is done in real time. I have ridden the Red Line from 95th to Howard on several occasions.
