After doing MLA format for my entire college career, my history professor threw me a curveball wanting our next paper done in CMS. Thanks for the video
Except this video is wrong. It isn't using the current version of CMS - the 16th. The heading style is completely wrong. Level 1 heading style of CMA in the 16th edition is Centered, Boldface, and Title Style or Headline Style Capitalization - meaning you use Uppercase letters for all words in a Level 1 Heading except this words like "and," "to," or "but".
Robin Spielberger Hi Robin, thanks so much for the correction. So every letter in a level 1 headline is capitalized, centered and bold faced. Are subtitles (I think they are called level 2 headings) left aligned and only the first letter of each word capitalized in the 16th version or are they follow the same format as level 1 headings?
Denise Walsh The first letter of each word in a Level 1 Heading is capitalized. The entire heading is centered and in a boldface type style. Example: Freedom for a Land Under Siege *(this is all bold and centered)* Now, a Level 2 Heading is centered and the first letter of each word is capitalized just the same as a Level 1 Heading but is NOT boldface. A Level 3 Heading is capitalized just the same way but is NOT centered and not boldface. It starts on the left like any other non-indented sentence. Level 4 Heading starts on the left and only the First letter is capitalized. That is called "sentence case" type. It is also boldface again. Then you do not hit return and add a space after the period at the end of the sentence. You simply continue with the text of your paper. Make sure you "un-bold" the text when you start typing your paper. CMS says that the heading styles are only a suggestion, just as long as you are consistent. I tend to follow their suggestions, except I don't like the Level 4 Heading style. My Level 4 Heading style is as follows: I use Headline style capitalization (where the first letter of each word is capitalized) and I left align my heading. I then, italicize it and hit return providing a small space between it and the text that follows. (Other heading levels are usually double-double spaced - meaning I hit return twice - and this one is single spaced, meaning I only hit return once). I hope I helped. Googling templates for other CMS research papers or for theses and dissertations is a good idea to give you some examples. Beware, not all are correct. If you use an Apple computer, the writing program "Scrivener " is amazing, helpful, and comes with a template. It has a 30 day free trial and you get a solid 30 days of use...which means that if you close the program every time after you use it, you can start it 30 times and that may take longer than 30 days. A great deal. Word is the bane of my existence and I've found that for long research papers (such as the thesis I finished last semester - 110 pages) using any other program is better. Word gets bogged down and starts to seriously lag. For research papers, you don't need all the creative functions that word offers...you need a simple typesetting program. "Mellel" is another great program for this but there is a serious learning curve and I didn't have time to switch and study a new program. Finally, a citation entering program that is worthwhile is called Zotero. Free and downloadable. Almost always right - more so than any of the other thousand that I've used. Good Luck!!
+Robin Spielberger Still don't get it. Using info the video. I've looked just about everywhere and I can finding different formats for the same type of AAA (Chicago) style.
Because they have nothing better to do with their lives, except make people miserable with trivial nonsense that you almost certainly wont be using in the real world. Including Academia's opinions.
man, what is the point of this bullcrap. i hate my teacher, MLA is like 10x easier and same result. im going to school for computer networking not english.
lol fuck MLA Chicago and any other retarded citation format. citation is the worst part of any type of class. motherfuckers just made the life of students 10x harder. citation is good, but not when if you put a period instead of coma you will lose half a mark.
After conforming to MLA for the past several years, I had to pick up CMS real quick and this video does a great job of giving the basic breakdown of the style. Thank you very much.
I earned an A in my English class - a class that used MLA, now I have to learn Chicago for a different class and subject. They seriously need to standardize this bullshit.
Thank you so much for your efforts and explanations in thorough details. Your video is the only one I find easy to follow. You should do more tutorials!
Great video. Thanks for hitting all the points while also keeping it concise. I recommend people watching this save a copy after setting up their paper in any specific format to use as a template for future papers.
Honestly, what's the point of this? Why do college professors do this? We spend so much time learning MLA format in High School so why not just stay with MLA? I'm soooo tired of school!
Thanks so much for the add and demo. My previous degree program was APA and had no clue about Chicago Style. This style is required for my American History MA.
She says 'there is no set number of spaces to go down" on the title page, but there IS a set number; it is the 3-inch mark on the left side ruler. To set the rulers, go to the "view" tab and checkmark "show rulers"
Easier to use the ruler; just line it up with the "3" - more precise and accurate, and no counting or "enter' required. Just arrow down the page to the 3.
You are awesome, thank you so much! Your video is so detailed and easy to understand. All of my frustration instantly melted away!! Huge Chicago style essay here I come, lol.
Then ppl wonder why after uni or college ppl cant do sh1t ... well this is why! We spend more time trying to figure out things which will come in use only for ur paper...
Your English grammar is terrible. I would suggest you take a basic writing course if you want to be understood. I hope English is NOT your first language.
I have been struggling with the Chicago style. My school has a writing center but I never finish my work in time to submit to get the help. This video was very helpful. I'm tired of losing points because of formatting in Turabian. This has been the most difficult of all the styles I have had to learn but I'm determined to get it.
Excellent job!! Thank-you so much for saving my ass in grad school! The only improvement I could suggest, is to make the video a little louder if possible. Cheers!!
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you so much for this detailed video. It helped me more then you could believe. The essay that I needed to use this for was a considerable portion of my grade. This was the difference between an A and a low C or a D. Thank you once more!
FYI. Footnote numbers have to be standard size, to do this, highlight the superscript number, right click, font, uncheck the superscript box under "effects". you're welcome.
ok i really liked the way u showed that actually on word which no doubt helped a lot since i just started college i have some questions which will be silly for u coz ur a pro but i need to i am confused about foot notes i am using 1 book and my info is from that book now whenever i use info from my book i add an footnote i mean this way pretty much everything is from book so if u can explain that plz i have paper due Wednesday, really APPRECIATED
Yes, but if that bothers you there is a way to change it. You can go to the button you click to insert the page number, and at the bottom of that menu you should click on "Format page numbers..." From there, you will be able to choose what number your page numbers start with.
Ever since 5th grade, all my teachers continuously taught me how to use MLA. I grew up breathing MLA. Now that I'm in college as an engineering major, I'm forced to learn & use this autistic notation for ONE dumbass history/writing class... thnx uni
so at the 2:40 mark, when you went to the left after aligning the date & etc, exactly how did you get back there, because I did something & the whole paper looked completely distorted even when i did the undo option?
What edition of CMOS is this again? Because I checked out other Chicago style tutorials and I noticed some differences, like the footnote number should be normal size, not raised, followed by a period in the endnote; the title in the title page should be ALL CAPS; and the first page number should be "1" not "2". This confuses me a little.
jravenger - If the paper is supposed to be in CMS, the citation information should go in either a footnote or endnote depending on what your teacher prefers.
Thanks! For bibliography instead of typing everything in, can we just click on "bibliography" underneath the References tab and it will auto create a bibliography page for us? Would it be in the correct Chicago format?
On the bottom of the 1st page of the essay there is a line "shortened time by 20 minutes" why is this in inverted commas, and why is it not referenced? Also, do you have any more info, links etc on rules about in-text citations that don't require inverted commas, as opposed to quotations which do? How does a reader know when what you are referencing begins if it is not in quotation marks?
Technically, the majority of your paper should be from you rather than your book, and you should use the book to support your writing. But yes, you will need to use a footnote every time you put information from the book whether it's a direct quote or put into your own words. When you use the same source, you only put all of the citation info in the first footnote. The remaining footnotes can just contain the author's last name and the relevant page number. Does that answer your question?
I find that I am not able to use this resource for my classes because it shows improper examples of paragraphs. A paragraph is much more than two sentences yet this example paper is full of incomplete paragraphs.
