He actually didn't say that. The point he was making is that if the budget doesn't pass, there would be immediate cuts to public transportation across the city. For the alderman that held out (like Fioretti), public transportation is key. Daley admits that its easier to vote "no", but they were sent there to make the hard decisions. By the way, the budget passed.

If Daley wanted to make a broad policy point, he’d say “We’ll be over capacity and it will suck for everybody.” He would frame his rhetoric as having city-wide consequences. Instead, he chose to say “When the people are not picked up in YOUR ward, YOU’LL be calling Streets and San[itation] for the trucks” to hammer in the political peril facing alderpersons who vote “no.” Daley having the actual (not theoretical) power to influence how CTA cuts would be implemented, combined with this and other warnings of personal peril to those who oppose CTA funding, is an implicit threat. Is the speech persuasive and rhetorically strong? Yes. But don’t pretend it isn’t brandishing the clout-collateral that it is.

@@jontee4freemindless acceptance? The city needs to pass a budget. If they don’t, the city shuts down. Daley wants those who vote no to have the courage to face the consequences. They worked months on this budget and now alderman are suddenly saying “no”. So we are stingy on money, but give a blank check to police and fire? Voting for the budget sucks because there is always something you don’t like there. It was negotiated. You don’t want to vote for it? Fine, but don’t hide from the consequences

@@Donillini of course, but are you sure you understand what this specific budget was about? This budget raised the prices of the public transit in order to pay for public transit (an unfair amount many agree), which means the poorest people in the city had to cover the cost. And Daley is very well known for bullying alderman. Yes, budgets are hard. And in those difficult decisions, sometimes they are wrong. And in the Daley era, Daley made sure the people around him were people who did not tell him he was wrong.

Agree with your comment about Brandon but Daley sold Chicago out. He made deals to HIS benefit and put this city in so much debt that you and i will not see it paid off in our life time.

@@smith7388 Of Course! at the end of the day Daley was just another crooked Democrat! However at least he kept most of the city & Downtown Safe by having a strong support for law enforcement! Now under Johnson, crime & theft is in every single neighborhood in Chicago!

Richard M Daley and Rahm Emanuel were ok to great. Lightfoot and her successor suck. Lightfoot cost that office it’s power, prestige and influence.
