Chicago`s `sunken` homes are remnants of a bold effort to raise the city out of the mud

Sometimes in Chicago, a home`s first floor is actually below the level of the streets and sidewalks outside. So Shayle from Evanston asks: why are the streets so high in some neighborhoods?

It’s interesting that this seemed to happen in every city and town in the western world in the mid 19th century simultaneously.

Seems weird they decided to start raising buildings in January. I'm not saying you can't do it through the winter, I'm just saying all the problems the lack of of water shed was causing the city also is a problem when it's frozen in January and you have to dig a hole to get under a building

Cities were built originally without sewers, or heat pipes, water pipes, electricity, etc (because they had Wells in the basements originally, no electricity, and used out houses or chamber pots). Overtime cities/towns obviously grew larger and on the sites of old infrastructure. Once all these new innovations we're developed the cheapest way to install things like sewers, electricity, water, heating, etc wants to put them on the ground level and put a street above it. And then in some cases there was a mud flood I suppose.

Ancient Rome was not built with a sewer! LOL it was renowned for its heat pipes as well. Read Pliny... This city is going back over 2000 years so "originally" cities were built with sewers.
