One of my favorite performances of this song that I've seen so far. Roxie's character isn't easy to act out; being a character who is awkward yet charming, yet selfish yet endearing, yet despicable... not an easy part to nail.
Im not saying you cant but Chicago's been running for a long time so you're kind of running out of time since almost evey Broadway fan has seen it. But when I saw it last year, one of the girls in Cell Block Tango was 18, so maybe you could outperform the older performers..? Rootimg for you though when you have to audition for that.
Brandy did AMAZING as Roxie !! So expected but did way better than everyone thought!! My drama teacher was in Chicago with her and I saw it with her in it as well as the original Broadway cast and she KILLED
My mom and I got the chance to see Chicago back in June for my mom's birthday and it was awesome! We even got to meet Brandy after the show, since she was signing autographs for the fans. It was amazing getting to meet her and I told her I still watch Cinderella. She loved that the most. LOL!
iloverette If you haven't seen her I Cali she's doing it again in D.C. at the Kenney center. She did that good, they asked her to play the part in three different times.
As always, Brandy is an incredible performer who delivered the vocals and acting! I will say though, her voice is almost *too* perfect for a character that, at least from my perspective, should always seem a bit delusional. I would still love to see her full performance!
ShawBrothersGirl Wow!! I would not be able to afford that, especially with me having to travel from Alabama. I didn't know the tickets were that expensive!
I've watched other ppl do this role and they're not half as good as her!!! That's y they extended her. She was one of the best Roxie's ever. Probably the best they had seen in awhile🙌👏👏. Really really nice and she can sannnngggg!!!!
She's an absolute delight! One of the best ever? No, in the history of all the ladies who have played this role in this particular production, no she is not. Is she lonely? Yea. Does she have charm for days? Yes.
i was so surprised to see her few years back at Chicago musical in LA. I was still picturing moesha era Brandy with that 90s R&B voice but I was like god damn, woman, you saaang
The one thing I love so much about Roxie is that every performer can put their own stamp on it but it is a deceptively difficult role to really pull off. Everyone with some charisma and talent can do the role but very few really do it well to make Roxie stand out the ways she’s supposed to do so. Some actors who seem good on paper are missing a key ingredient to make Roxie really sing while others you wouldn’t expect to knock your socks off. Brandy knocked me by surprise. I knew she was talented and could SING…but the way she spun this role to fit her strengths while challenging herself to NOT dumb down the energy and choreography of the Reinking watered down adaptation of Fosse’s choreography and staging is worthy of applause. They get rid of most of the already watered down choreography for most celebrities who then try make up for the lack of actual dancing by adding their own quirks, but Brandy added her own personality while actually dancing the part. Bravo to her
I really respect I she still kept some part of black sentiment into this play. With a little spoon of black gospel added, the song sounds so fresh and new already.
I saw her as Roxie at The Pantages in 2016 and she was fantastic. Such a talented and charismatic performer. She sure has come a long since “The Boy is Mine.”
Wow! I wish I could make it to NYC to see her live. From the looks of things she's doing a phenomenal job as Roxie❤️. I hope she does more things on Broadway in the future. Possibly playing Dorothy in "The Wiz" 🙏 .
She actually did such an amazing job. I loved every bit of this play. We were lucky to have front row seats. She was nice enough to take pics afterwards with fans.
Brandy is a vision in Chicago, though that's no surprise given her amazing 1997 Cinderella performance. I hope she does more musical and stage work soon.
First I met Cats when graduate school University of Oxford. Next I married a man and met my papa from Japan then were all The phantom of the opera I fell in love that musical. Third time musical was Chicago! Our neighborhood be so many super rich Koreans.
Don't get me wrong, I though Brandy was very good in this portrayal of Roxie however I feel like character is meant to be more egotistical and sexy in this song (and slightly evil)- I don't think she's supposed to be a likeable character, but you want to watch her because she's interesting and almost unpredictable in how she's going to act. This version feels like they're trying to make you like her too much and they've lost that sassy touch.
@@koyfiish27 I mean have you listened to the lyrics? “Who says that murder’s not an art?” She’s making jokes about *murdering someone* because she thinks it’ll kickstart her career. She’s a narcissistic monster. That’s the character. She’s naive and not very worldly, but she’s still just an absolute crapsack of a person. I think Renée Zellweger is my favorite Roxie because damn, she just NAILED that. That devious, scheming, asshole nature while still maintaining a certain childish naïveté about how the world works (“why didn’t they want to take my picture?”). This was played was too straight IMO. This is supposed to be Roxie’s inner thoughts, the monstrous side of herself she doesn’t want anyone to know about, “but it’s such a special night and you are such a lovely audience!”, her narcissism makes her reveal it to us anyway, because that’s how narcissistic killers are. They want to show off how clever they are.
Lowkey agree plus it’s fucking brandy they honestly could have easily achieved the renne version which I am not ashamed to say to this day is top tier till someone proves me wrong
This song is all about her loving herself way to much! It’s about her being conceded. So each persons portrayal will be different. She’s telling you she’s a star and she believes it ! Great job
Not really, the whole stage play felt super amateurish especially those guys around her who look like they can barely breath. She has too much force in the voice, when it's meant to be more dream like, mixed with self absorbed love. She's singing like a typical musical lead, but not an amazing musical lead like christian from Moulin Rouge or other examples that stand out. That's the problem with you people, you take anything good and let it soar, the truly outstanding are equalled to the good or else you'll offend the lowers, and the DANGER of that is that they're be gaslit into thinking they are amazing where they are. There's no "need to be like the greats" feeling they have, so these performers don't feel like they need to work efforted and harder. Also these plays never get the era down, especially in the theater which is meant to emphasize unique traits of a story. It just sounds impossibly contemporary, her hair and outfit is reminsicent to the late 1940s early 1950s and it just makes me think they couldn't give a shit about making the 1920s come to life. Good singer, beautiful, but not perfect amazing.
Wooooooooow, wowie wow @WitchKing-Of-Angmar you actually typed and posted "That's the problem with you people..." The question begs to be asked. Who exactly are "you people"?
After years of listening to her not singing, it's bizarre to actually hear her sing, sing. She has a beautiful tone and style. Wish she'd use it on an album.
From the quote of the 1927 original "You killed a man, --don't you even feel sorry?" That husband was so distraught in that movie, the anguish knowing who his wife really was.
You no something I had just left Chicago wen the decision was made reather if Ms.Norwood was going to take this job. Man did I leave at the wrong time. i really missed out on a special treat shes all of that and a bag of ticks.Right up the street from Mcdonalds on Deerfield street and Chestnut.
