"What's This World Coming To" is the DEFINITIVE Chicago track. Instrumentally, it has lots of horns, raunchy guitar, and organ. Vocally, it features all three of their main singers. This track is TRULY "Chicago in a nutshell." The QUINTESSENTIAL Chicago track. 👍👍👍

a song featuring all 3 lead singers. awesome song. Cetera an underrated bass player. my favorite band growing up in 70's playing the sax myself.

Another great classic Chicago tune, recorded at Caribou Ranch and featuring all three lead vocalists: Robert Lamm (mid baritone), Terry Kath (deepest baritone voice) and Peter Cetera (high tenor voice)! The original album cover was printed by the American Bank Note Company and uses raised ink like you feel on paper currency.

Chicago's sixth was kind of a transitional record between the harder rock days of the earliest records and Chicago VII which was a very jazz-influenced double LP. There were some good tunes on the record and the production was very tight.

Another great Chicago song with sung conversation between Terry Kath and Peter Cetera is Dialogue Parts 1 & 2 off the wood album, aka Chicago V.

One of the best up tempo Chicago songs! The vocals of Peter, Terry and Robert say it all with incredible mix and energy. The horns and rhythm drive it too. Definitely one of my favorite tracks on Chicago VI. Thanks for reviewing it.

Yes, Walt's Bari sax at the ending with Roberts B3 killing it! I love these early albums, Jim Guercio produced these albums not over produced so you could hear every instument if you zero in on it! Genius!

The thing about this early Chicago that you have touched on is that the juxtaposition of the different voices and instruments is unique and allowed the band to explore music that no other rock band could before or since. Peter Cetera on bass was always incredible and worked so well with Terry Kath's guitar style. Same with their voices. Terry's baritone and Peter's tenor were perfect complements. The horns were always competing with the guitar in a way that made all of them sound better. It's such a shame to me that Terry had to die so young and that the band was obviously never the same. I recommend their first eight albums highly. They still sound fresh and innovative, some of them over 50 years old. Incredible.

Excellent pick Jim Murphy . On every level , pulse , rythmic urgency match the seamless vocal interchange . That Hammond B3 section gives that Tower Of Power-like finish .

Peter Cetera’s basswork is stellar on this entire album! But I always have to turn it up for that short gritty descending guitar break in the middle. I think the cover is recreating printed currency, like the pattern in a dollar bill. There’s a good live in-studio version of this from a Dick Clark special they did in the 70s, though you can see where the second verse is hideously cut for time. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FRX3WwfvdV0.html

Pete was underappreciated as a bassist. Listen to them live, as he keeps up with Kath & Cetera changes during the jams.

Terry, Peter, and Robert sing. And yeah, the saxophone toward the end is real cool. But Walt really shines with the flutes in "Long Time No See" and Robert sounds like he's singing through a megaphone. I know this is done by request, but there have been many songs (especially by Terry) that were unreleased until a few years ago. "Your Love's An Attitude", "Sixth Sense" and many others you can see on the Wiki page for each album.

One of the rare appearances of a baritone sax on a Chicago tune, and one of the most amazing parts for me is at the very end of the fade, when Terry breaks into this rapid-fire 32nd note rhythm comping; First album recorded at the Caribou Ranch in Colorado; likely they were dressed that way because they were freezing :-D

One thing I would like to point out is what an awesome bass player Peter Cetera is. Man, I can't believe how good he is - I seemed to only pay attention to his incredible 1st tenor voice.

@@SightAfterDark He's known for being a great bassist but his voice is what everyone keys on because its so apparently good and famous. He had a great solo career as you know. But man he seems to always be moving and playing difficult licks - just awesome! Keep up the great job!!

Another great combo of styles and vocalists is Brand New Love Affair Parts 1 & 2. This was a minor hit off Chicago VIII (the one with the cardinal on the cover - a nod to when Chicago had a baseball team named the Cardinals before they moved to St. Louis many decades ago and started a fierce rivalry with the Cubs). Part 1 soulful and mellow, Part 2 ramps it up with one of the best horn breaks Chicago ever recorded (in my opinion). Check it out sometime.

I'd say most definitely the hi-light of the album. Laid back western feel to the album. It had an appeal. After this I think Something in the City & Terry's Jenny were the next best. That was before the reissue included the Al Green collaboration. There is good video of that.
