The power has changed (I miss those E's!) but the Metra "Dinky Parade" on the BNSF is still well worth watching. Whenever I'm in Chicago I make it a point to spend some time out at the racetrack. And I wish Amtrak would get back into the mail and express business--the CZ was even more impressive with all those head end cars in the consist.
I enjoyed the TRAINS magazine article from 1987 or '88 featuring this racetrack in general and the E9's in particular. The E9's sound quieter than I imagined. The 3 F40's and "material handling cars" on train 6 sure do give an early-'90's look. Great job!
Nice job... I watched who knows how many of those at Naperville and Eola when I was a kid. That's probably still the best commuter line in the country.
excellant classic footage grew up by the triple track in the 70's-80's brings back alot of memories. The BN E-9's looked good, sounded good, and ran good.
I still live in the same house all my life 2 blocks from the tracks and I model in h.o. on a big layout and I painted up four Es in silver. And 1 E9. In B N. Green after the rebuilds just need the gallery cars to complete my set up. Brings back memory's that still come back when I see this video. I miss those days that I took for granted would last forever and blast those people who got rid of the horns.
The name "DINKY" lives on, Grew up in Berwyn along the Burlington RR in the WW11 period and the name for the little commuter steam engines was the Dinky. You didn`t catch a train to go to Chicago, you rode the Dinky.
I grew up in La Grange with the Es, brings a lump to the throat, knowing a number of them are scrap now, at least IRM Has 4 OF THESE QUEENS OF THE RAILS.
At 2:40 that the locomotive was involved in 1991 Downer Grove That struck Mary Theresa Poor Mary she tried attempted to cross the track but she couldn't including that she couldn't stop it was to late
It's always been my understanding the cab car simply has a control panel that controls the rear locomotive. The loco is simply pushing the train controlled by the cab car engineer. I know that's the way it is in current commuter push pull operations .
