2-28-1987. (NOTE: The last few seconds had to be muted because the song "Thank You For Being A Friend", aka the themesong to The Golden Girls, was copyright blocked. I had to mute it in order to make the vid viewable. A throwaway song, you owners of the writing credits! At 445, "Urgent" by Foreigner....now THAT's a tune!) This was a Laker road pregame special regarding Chick's 2000th straight game at Utah on Feb 28th. The host was Roy Firestone, who was both the Lakers road pregame host and the host of the interview show Up Close on ESPN. It's a nice, sentimental little docu on the background of Chick and Marge's lives and Chick's work, etc. Heartwarming.

Legendary man right there. I didn't start watching Chick until 96, but man what an entertaining voice to call Laker games.

when the lakers won it all last year i thought of kobe and chick. been almost 20 years since he passed and i still think of him quite often greatest PBP man in sports history

Chick Hearn was the greatest sportscaster of all time. He went on to call 3,338 straight games, only needed to stop because of surgery. His quick wit, longevity, language, and passion for the game go unmatched. My favorite Chick originals are "Bunny Hop in the Pea Patch" and "The Mustard is off the hot dog".

I'd say that Chick is tied with Vin Scully for the greatest sportscaster of all time. The style they broadcasted their games was different - Vin was more conversational and weaved the slow action of baseball seamlessly with profound stories, whereas Chick had to be quick witted due to the fast action of basketball, but each was a genius in their own right. Chick has Vin beat in consecutive games - 3338 and its not close, but Vin does have Chick beat in longevity in terms of sheer number of years being a broadcaster - Vinny started right out of college for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1950 and broadcast until 2016 while as Chick only made it from 1960 to 2002. Their one true commonality was that they both broadcast for LA for the best part of their lives. May both of them now rest in peace.

What separated Chick from a lot of local announcers (looks at a former Celtics announcer in particular) was that even though you knew he wanted the Lakers to win, he would not hesitate to give credit to opponents for a game well played.

@@fatfreddyscat5767 I remember in 01, they lost to the Clippers by double digits one night and he called it the most embarrassing game he'd seen in his years announcing. He always kept it real.
