That homemade ranch is a gamechanger, check the recipe for both sandwiches and the nutrition (all pulled from myfitnesspal) here: ► Recipe (with nutrition table): www.ethanchlebowski.com/cooking-techniques-recipes/chicken-bacon-hoagie-lower-cal-vs-restaurant-style Other Links & Stuff ► Support on Patreon: www.patreon.com/EthanC ► Hoagie Roll RECIPE: www.ethanchlebowski.com/cooking-techniques-recipes/hoagie-rolls
Just a heads up your protein count on the chicken breast is wrong, the table is using 31g of protein per 100g of raw chicken breast. But cooked chicken breast is 31g per 100g, not raw.
homie, your videos are amazing. i really really appreciate how you label each chapter of the video so that it's easy to find what i'm looking for when scrubbing through. now i'm trying to figure out which recipe to try out making first!
Yes. That's normal. Hunger is mostly caused by not eating for a while, which has nothing to do with a video which happenens to have some very appetising sandwiches.
With the turkey bacon, I would recommend trying to cook it for longer, or otherwise trying to find a different brand, as I've never had that sort of issue with it (I get mine from Costco. It's way healthier than regular bacon and it comes out just as crispy).
“Slide 3 slices onto a baking sheet...” *Puts 14 square feet of gargantuan bacon on the pan* Seriously, where does one get a piece of bacon larger than an average sized pig?
i'm fairly sure that larger pieces of bacon are usually wet brined or injected with water, which increases the size of the cells and the space in between them
My Mom and older sister are on a diet (plus they can’t eat carbs) I showed them this, they made a lettuce wrap and they loved it, soon I’m going to join them, Thank you Adam
LOL I literally JUST subscribed to you and you have a new video out. XD I love your Adam Ragusea video by the way! I think it effectively addresses the issue of deconstructing how people who achieve effective results think stuff works vs how people actually achieve effective results.
Are you basically saying the video addresses the issue of deconstructing how people who achieve effective results work vs how other people try to improve upon these results?
Ethan, thank you so much for all of your content. I just made the Restaurant Style Hoagie for lunch and I think I'm still coming down from that high. You were *not* kidding about that ranch. Holy moly!
Btw, I made the hoagie rolls today and they were awesome. Soft but crunchy enough. They were able to soak up moisture without getting soggy. Perfectly textured sandwich rolls. Thanks Ethan.
Hey Ethan, for a few months now i've been replacing mayo or sour cream by something we call "fromage blanc" here in France. Works great in coleslaw or basically any sauce and is like 0% to 2% fat. Look it up, this could be a game changer for your Low cal videos ! Keep up the good work you channel is great ;)
Great video, thanks. One suggestion to folks concerned about both calories and flavor. The super low calorie types of dressing like he used can be really good, but you can easily make them better by adding fresh chives, fresh parsley, fresh garlic, freshly ground pepper, etc., and sprucing them up a bit. You can also just buy some xantham gum, which is a perfectly healthy and natural ingredient, and make your own "mock ranch" using low or no fat sour cream and mayo and other regular ranch ingredients, and just a tad of xantham gum powder to add viscosity you might lose from the lack of oil and fats in the sour cream and mayo. Many options to tinker with.
I randomly came across your videos. And I have to say that your videos are super high quality and very informative. Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!
your delivery makes these videos so much fun to watch and I actually feel my self growing just for watching delicious food being prepared thank you I will watch all your videos
I know you don’t want to compromise on the roll but I would be really interested to hear how you would change that up! I feel like given how many calories are coming from the roll there are a lot of savings that could be made there. Especially for someone who prefers lower carb recipes :) Thanks for the awesome vid, I love this series now that I’m cutting!!
Hey Ethan- just want to say I've been watching your videos for a bit and they're fantastic. You've really cracked the code- your videos are clear, concise but entertaining. So informational even for a home cook that knows the basics. Just here to say you're doing great!!
I really love your channel, I'm really trying to be healthier this year and make better choices and I appreciate this series specifically, because sometimes you just want a chicken bacon ranch sub but it's so helpful to know how to make it a little better for you!
Not really, not many people need to care about calories because they naturally don't overeat, and not all of those that do need to, actually pay attention (America this means you). Subway's gonna be fine.
I use 1 cup plain Greek yogurt with a 1/2 packet of ranch dressing to store in the fridge. It replaces the mayo on sandwiches and serves as salad dressing or dipping for veggies. A lot less calories. 😃
You can also add ingredients to the store bought ranch. Like lemon juice, chives, garlic, parsley, etc. This way you can add flavor without adding calories.
I have been really into cooking but also trying to lose weight, it’s a difficult balance. Thank you for these high quality videos to follow & they are so interesting! Hoping to see more lower calorie yet still delicious recipe videos in the future. You set the standard high
I think something you can add at the end is a suggestion of the best combo between the restaurant and the low calories version. So like homemade bread, chicken breast, pork bacon, and the ranch is the best for flavors and calories.
Your channel is very soothing for some reason. Love your vids. Would love to see some plant based recipes like you did in your taco series, if you have any of those. Thanks!
These videos are fantastic! Losing weight myself at the moment by just being sensible to maintain a calories deficit. Will definitely making the lower calorie version with that home-made ranch!
surprised no dill in the ranch. also, greek yogurt would work really well for a low cal ranch instead of the walden farms trasholla. love the vids mate
I love the way you break down the caloric value of the meals and the fat and protein. Been watching since your México videos. When will we see more Mexican recipes. Maybe do a Mexican dessert?
Made this a while ago, but never posted my thoughts. I'm terrible at bread making so I just bought premade rolls. I imagine the home made ones are awesome. Anyway, everything tastes great, but idk if my family and I were that crazy about the homemade ranch sauce. We all have different flavors we like more than others, so your mileage may vary. The sauce is a bit overpowering, even in small quantity. It tasted more like something you would use for a vegetable dip tray or for potato chips than for something I would use on a sub. I have a kitchen scale and followed the measurements listed in the recipe description exactly, so it wasn't that I added too much of any one ingredient. Swapped to a store bought ranch I had in the fridge. My family and I felt like the premade ranch blended a lot better with the sub. We could taste all the ingredients working togethor, rather than just tasting only ranch. Maybe there is a better homemade recipe that would fit my family's tastes. Regarding the pepper mayo chicken, it tastes really really good when cooked right. A helpful hint when cooking is to put a VERY thin layer of the pepper mayo on the chicken. Otherwise you end up with a pool of excess oil from the mayo in your pan. Too much pepper mayo and it also seems to cook and fall off like a bad fried chicken batter.
Loved this video as I do all your videos! Would love to see a series where you try to create meals/meal plans that hit all of the macro/micronutrient requirements for normal/athletic people.
Looking at that overhead wrap, I would give it a 1/4 or 1/2 roll before tucking in the left and right sides and rolling the rest of the way. It helps tuck the sides in a bit better imo.
Me as a home bread baker and pretty good cook. Like you i will not skimp on the bread. One thing i always notice nobody really looks at the salt content, because that is one if the things people need to watch out for. I see a lot so-called healthier recipes where the salt content is what drives it over the edge.
looks awesome definitely gonna give it a shot once i get the stuff in for the hoagie rolls. however, I learned from babish that you can fry turkey bacon in oil and it gets crispier and doesn't soak up that much oil so i think it'd still be good in the low cal version
To make the chicken breast more juicy, you could use the chinese method ‘velveting chicken’. Soaking it in f.e. baking soda, than rinsing it of and continuing the recipe.
Fantastic recipe, and series' concept. I know of a salad dressing that is low-cals; it uses greek yogurt instead of mayo. So maybe use it as a base, and from there adjust/alter the viscosity using xanthan gum.
great video as always bro! ngl your videos have reallly helped me become a better cook and understand cooking principles! I used to not cook AT ALL bc I thought it was hard lmao. Keep grinding brotha and I know you'll make it big!
If you want a turkey bacon that more closely matches the texture of orignal bacon, then I suggest you get oscar mayer brand turkey bacon. It is thinner than most turkey bacon and crisps up nicely on a griddle. IMO it does not cook very well in an oven. There is a regular and reduced fat version, and I can't really tell a difference between the two.
Oh i'm a big fan of Remington James, Greg Doucette, and Will Tennyson. Unfortunately, the chocolate chip cookies Remington made did not taste good at all. Still love the guy though
While I don’t disagree that pork bacon is better, but in my experience, the turkey bacon does crisp nicely if you put it on a wire rack in the oven at 425F until browned and crackling, I think it would legitimately increase the crunch factor in the lower cal sandwich. Let me know what you think.
i was able to make the lower cal version even less and taste amazing! i got it to be 633 calories for whole sandwich due to different roll, cheese, and bacon (that actually got crsipy). not a flew or a gotcha' but yeah thought i might share
I really try to guess what swaps you make while I’m watching these videos. Very fun man, love the ideas. I thought you might make something out of Greek yogurt, but the Walden farms is something I didn’t ever think of. 👌🏾
velveeta shredded cheddar cheese and lite mayo. You could probably drop another 150-200 cals with just those, on top of the other low cal changes you made.
I knew he was going to pop off from when i subbed at 20k. Im only subbed to like 3 food channels and hes the only one Im planning to follow up on his recipes.
