I actually really appreciate that Ethan goes by a single shopping list rather than doing what most channels do and dividing the price into individual amounts of an ingredient. Like sure: I might use half an onion for a recipe, but I’m still paying for the whole onion. I don’t have a big freezer so saving ingredients, especially things like chicken thighs, is tricky, so knowing how much I’m gonna have to spend with basically nothing already in, or without dividing down the recipe cost, is really helpful.
@MichaelAlthauser
@MichaelAlthauser Год назад
Chicken thighs freeze very well, for what it's worth. I sometimes get a full tray and prep them by deboning, then freeze any extras in freezer bags for the next time I need them.
@jackwilliamtaylor5656
@jackwilliamtaylor5656 Год назад
@@MichaelAlthauser oooh that’s a good shout! I know they freeze well but I never thought to debone and bag them rather than try and cram in another Tupperware of bone-in thighs (seriously, that’s how tight space is in the freezer 😅) I’ll try that, thanks!

You mean you dont bring a tablespoon and a teaspoon to the store and weight it on a scale, write down 5 cents, and then bring that teaspoon of salt to the cashier?
@nathanshackelford7812
@nathanshackelford7812 Год назад
I mostly disagree with this. For things like oil/seasonings/flour/butter that go in almost every recipe, these are kitchen staples that any cook should have so the price should be divided as most of the RU-vid food creators do. You are gonna buy those ingredients again each time you run out if you cook even a few times a week, so why not divide by the individual portion cost. For the meat, it should be what you actually have to pay but a good store will have meats like beef and chicken available in many different sizes so you can often get individual portions. Onions are priced by the pound, so if they call for half an onion, just find a really small whole white or yellow onion and then you are only paying for what you actually use and the individual price they show will align. Also, you likely won't be shopping at same stores as the content creators, so prices aren't the same anyway.
@himynameisdavenicetomeetyou
@@darylbiegtrucke4456 jokes aside that is basically exactly what I do for some of the more exotic/premium spices that I don't use everyday. Sure, salt doesn't make that list, but if I want something like bessobela for a particular dish, I do weigh it out and only buy what I need.

I think Josh's method of pricing makes more sense when you're talking about individual food items. You're comparing 1 burrito to 1 burrito, not 1 burrito to an entire pantry worth of ingredients to make said burrito. I think weighing out how much he uses in each burrito and telling us how many burritos he can make with all the stuff he bought would make more sense

You can easily go under budget on this if you simply shop at Walmart. All his ingredients are either top shelf brand or artisanal from a Mexican store. There is no reason to spend that much on cheese if budget is truly a deal breaker. Even the Walmart brand pinto beans are going to be cheaper than Goya beans. My family now is used to a guacamole with low fat yoghurt and some finely cubed cherry tomatoes. I do the guacamole, if I decided there should be peppers or gherkins in it, enjoy it or buy/do your own! One of my negative critiques for most youtube cooking videos is their lack of scalability. I have a large family, and most *fast* or *cheap* cooking hacks just don't scale well to meals for 6 or 8 people. Just the fact that searing meat without crowding a pan takes 3x longer, even when making something simple like stew is often overlooked. This video does a better job than most, your shopping list is easily scalable to making more burritos. I don't expect every recipe to be tailored to my specific circumstances, but I appreciate when I see something I can actually use. Thanks Ethan!

Hi Ethan, I’ve made about 6 of these burritos so far and my family and body love it. This is the perfect post workout meal! Thank you so much for this excellent video and the avo/cream mash is fantastic and so much better than just avocados and sour cream, also thank you for the significant less sodium intake!

Theres something straightforward about this video that really elevates it above the normal youtube cook things. The price on the groceries being just "hey i payed 33 for this, you'll have some stuff that you can use for other stuff but thats the ticket at the register" is a consideration for people going to cook these burritos themselves. Same goes for the end review; theres no theatrics, rapid camera cuts or fake moans of culinary appreciation. "The chicken was nice here, next time I'll add cilantro" sounds like something I've said after trying a recipe out. I think this is a recipe to make, and not a recipe to idly marvel at while you infinitely scroll youtube. Mediocre cooking that you do is hundred times better than imagining michelin star chef prepared meals that won't leave your screen.

Really love this take! I have the same thoughts about Chipotle. They're 'good', but they just plomp soooo hecking much rice on there and then just give you a little dabble of chicken. My local Chipotle can't wrap a burrito to save their lives anyways, so I'm basically paying $13 for a rice burrito that's gonna fall apart. I used to eat there a lot, but I'm just kinda getting fed up with it. That chicken marinade looks epic though! I might have to try that!

I use my own recipes, but I’m experienced at prepping burrito ingredients for dinners. I make/wash & prep the rice, protein, veg, & toppings ahead of time, then store then all separately. I portion out my rice in a bowl, microwave it until just warm (repeat this after e dry addition), then add protein, veggies, & cheese (cheese should be soft & melty but not fully melted). Nuke a tortilla for 10-15sec, then QUICKLY add the filling and fold closed. I sear mine in a bit of oil on both sides. Serve with sour cream/salsa/guacamole on side. Wrap in foil for transit if needed. I can have a seared burrito on a plate in 10 minutes if that my only task, 20 if I’m doing unrelated things & get distracted. The rice and protein can be frozen, but I don’t recommend freezing veggies except maybe corn (just buy it frozen & mix into cooked & already-cooked rice before portioning & freezing).

My son and I made the Chipotle bowl with brown rice. We made a black bean-corn salsa and sauteed steak with peppers and onions. It cost us less than $10 as we had most of the ingredients in our larger: beans, frozen corn, fresh produce, 1 pound of thin sliced flank steak. It was healthy, delicious and we got generous portions. We were able to control salt and fat. We bought a tub of guacamole from Jewel Foods, which is really great.

Such a great video! As someone who has worked at Chipitle our chicken is good but nothing special from what I know the only seasoning is just salt, cooked with lost of oil, and 6 min on each side but yours looks amazing. It can be stressful to ask for an alteration but it's ok! Lots of people ask for no rice or no beans. Plus I think if you want guac get it from the store and add it to bites rather than getting it in the burrito because it's way overpriced! It's realy simple too if you want to make it yourself avacodaos, 2.5 parts red onion, 2.5 part cilantro, 1 part jalapenos, 0.5 part citrus (I think just lime and lemon), and some salt. The pockets of food thing is a problem, I've had to train 3 people and I always tell them to evenly spread the food through out but in the end we don't have the time to make it perfect and it just kinda happens. Especially with sauces! Thanks for the great video :)
