that was funny none of my chickens including the maran does that. is that normal are they supposed to fart? lol

SANDRA TAYLOR Actually because Marans is a French word, you don’t pronounce the s on it in this particular case.

Color variety does not effect the overall production in marans or most other chicken breeds, genetics and proper breeding/selection effects overall production in each breed. So if you like the look of the birchen and white color varieties, and they come form a good breeder or hatchery they should do fine for you. They are not known for disease resistance, however; disease is not something they have extreme problems with.

For the most part their disposition is good, the more you work with them when they are young the better they will be.

As far as I am aware the only difference between marans and french marans strains are the feather legs of french.

Thats not something I can really help with, I would suggest finding a breeder or hatchery in Kuwait, or ordering them from Europe, be sure to check customs service first.

Thats a good question, I should make a video on it, ill give you the short version. The bird we know as the chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) comes from the red jungle fowl (Gallus gallus) native to southeastern Asia. Like dogs, cats, cows and sheep ect. after its domestication it changed through selective breeding on the owners side and genetics. Through time some chickens came out smaller or they were breed to be smaller. As of now most poultry associations classify a bantam as a bird one-fifth the size of a regular sized bird, this also works for ducks and some turkeys. You can now find many of the standard sized birds in bantam, some were bred smaller from the regular chicken and others were bred form completely different breeds. Others like the silkie can only be found in bantams making them true bantams. In short bantams came about through time, selective breeding, genes, and associations like the American Poultry Association maintaining breed characteristics and what makes a bantam versus a regular chicken is it is one-fifth the size.

Bantam = mini chicken , very small size

The darkness of the egg is a genetic aspect, some genetic strains naturally lay the chocolate color egg. The type of Maran has no real effect. On that same note, a breeder can select for darker eggs over time, like I am doing. Hope this helps.

I have 2 cuckoo Marans hens and they are my best layers out of a flock of 6 Dorkings, 2 Leghorns and 2 Speckled Sussex hens. It's common knowledge that the Leghorns are the biggest layers, production wise. I'm not complaining but, go figure.

Apparently, there are strains of Maran from England that are not fether footed, not yet recognized by the APA. They may have been mislabeled and are actually black coppers, I would grow them out and see if the copper coloring shows in there hackles and if they lay their signature brown egg.

Try going online. There are dozens of commercial hatcheries in the USA that hatch out many heritage breeds such as that Marans. The problem would be shipping as baby chicks can only survive a short time in transit. Maybe find European hatchery. It would be closer to you. Good luck on finding your chickens!

They will do fine if they have shade and plenty of water. I would suggest a lighter colored plumage though.

I have never eaten one, but I have heard they do taste different.

they are great table birds! especially the roos at about 7mos. they get very tough after 8 mos. They have great flavor and quite a bit of fat under the skin.

The Marans is the breed. Black-copper and splash are separate colors.

Same here. They are good mothers too. Mine lay almost daily in the fall, Georgia.

Not necessarily (if you are talking about vent sexing), bantams are the hardest. They do not show the feather sexable trait to. my understanding though.

@@GKGPoultry so when BCM are only a couple of weeks old, which is the easiest sexing method, vent, feather or comb?

@@asianangler The most visible is the comb, but the most accurate is the vent.

@@GKGPoultry I've looked at all my bcm chicks' butt, couldnt see any bubble and all look the same. I think only trained eyes or expert can sex by vent.
