We just started with Chickens. They are about a week or so away from being able to be moved outside. The coop was delivered and is waiting to be built. I just leveled the spot in the yard for it. Pretty exciting to be learning something new like this, but your videos have been invaluable to me. Thank you.

Good adjustments! You could also put a flap off the roof to keep the top of the feeder from catching the water and conducting\flowing it down... you should ne good. Great job!

I built my own coop for my 8 black Australorps, which is 4'x6' and a run that's 6'x12'. The walls are 6' tall. I'm 6'1", so I have no problems walking inside the run. Having to crawl to get in the coop? Yeah, not fun and I'd have to figure something out. Regarding the waterer, you can make your life A LOT easier by hooking the spout up to a 55 gallon rain barrel. I had an $11 food grade barrel from a car wash that they used to hold soap lying around, painted it black (to ward off algae) and essentially did what you did by having 1" PVC, 4' long go inside their run with 5 nipples screwed in it. I made modifications to make sure the water doesn't freeze in the winter and if anyone wants me to go into details about that, I can. I throw a couple ounces of bleach in it once a year and there's no issues with algae and it doesn't affect them one bit. It takes longer to set up, but I literally don't have to do anything for water for my girls. Regarding the feeder, I don't like my solution, but so far I've had zero issues with water intrusion. I'd post the amazon link, but then RU-vid would delete my post, but search for "DIY No Waste Chicken Feeder Kit" on Amazon. I installed 4 of them into a 5 gallon bucket. They have to stick their head in to reach the food and it keeps the food bone dry and we've had RECORD AMOUNTS OF RAIN this year! I've found that a 5 gallon bucket holds about 25 lbs worth of feed and my girls take maybe 3 weeks to finish it? So once every 3 weeks, I've got the chore of going into their run. If I was going to go on a month long vacation, I could just throw another 5 gallon bucket in there and would be 100% fine.

Great solutions! Thanks for taking the time to post. I’ve only ever had coop kits (or one crazy rental home that had a walk-in coop already there) but I would do a setup like this if I had it to do again. I appreciate you! ✌🏻❤️🐓

Rig up a door so you can come in and out vertically! Then zip tie your PVC feed pipe on the Inside of the coop so you do not have to extend any little roof outward. On crazy rain days wrap a 3ml contractor's trash bag over and around it because nothing penetrates those.

My chickens get too dehydrated with the nipple systems, they HATE them...one day to be sure they were getting enough water i sat a pan of water in fir them and they drank and drank as if they'd never had water...it worried me so got rid of the nipples and use just gravity flow system now so they get as much water as they need!

Another idea for the food - you could move it into space under the coop itself - so it would be better protected from above and then instead of a net put a solid wood or water-resistant cloth so rain couldn't get in from a side. That way the feeder would be connected to the wood so it wouldn't bend the net as it does right now. Hope this helps! I don't want to act like a wise-guy - just hoping to be helpful :D
@realsimplemama
@realsimplemama 5 лет назад
Yes good point! I was just worried that when I needed to clean it out, it would be a huge pain to get in. But that small space is more protected from the elements so it’s an option too! And feel free to always offer your perspective. I don’t get offended, I have so much to learn!

I do have a few videos about quarantine and introducing new birds but I’d try putting them in with the other chickens at night when everyone is half asleep and not paying attention. That with plenty of treats in the morning should help!
@realsimplemama
@realsimplemama 5 лет назад
Oh and fortunately a bit of pecking will happen and you can’t stop it, it’s inevitable and how they establish their flock order. BUT if it’s bloody r a chicken is getting a bald spot, may need to quarantine the bully for 5-6 days.
@VK-qo1gm
@VK-qo1gm 3 года назад
Jim Stone a year late, but never put your new chicks/chooks with existing ones together until they get used to each other, otherwise the pecking can be brutal. Have a wire fence separating them, you would have to have a box/shelter on the other side for the new ones. Allow them to see each other every day for a few weeks, with that fence divide between them, tgis is how you gradually introduce them. After a few weeks, feed both sides & remove wire, they will mingle & find their place. Pls don't ever throw in new ones with the existing ones or place the new ones in the coop whilst others roosting, it is unessessary to put your chickens through being attacked, etc. It's a bit of work but trust me the results are fantastic & peaceful.

@realsimplemama
@realsimplemama 4 года назад
I was going to add that you can always add cheap sand (don’t use the expensive smooth stuff!) or add cheap topsoil. If it’s a coop like mine that could maybe get rain on that ground, you can also mound it up in there so it’s a bit higher than the ground outside. Then you don’t turn it into a mud pit in rainy season!

I think your husband‘s theory about it dripping down the side is correct. Water has surface tension and will actually stick to a surface instead of dripping off of it if it’s at a gentle angle. Try putting a little roof with a good eve over the top of your feeder, so that water doesn’t have a chance to get the sides of your feeder wet. We live in Portland Oregon and a large roof overhang on anything that you want to keep dry goes a long, long way.

@@realsimplemama Thanks. I got the feeder Saturday. One thing that sold me was the wide brim at the feeder's bottom, which gives the chickens more room to feast. So far, I've seen less feed on the floor, whereas with the other feeder we had, the brim was narrower and there was always lots of feed on the floor. Now I'll get the waterer. Algae might not be much of a problem since little sunlight gets in the coop. We keep the coop lit with a 100-watt red light. We built the coop with 6"-thick walls and insulation, so the temperature never goes above 90 or below freezing.
