I'm newish to feathered babies but I've a lot of life experience and I've gotta say that you're the most informative and I really appreciate your love of birds -- I see it and hear it! Keep educating us. I've had my heart broken so many times because we still don't know what we're doing and we've busy lives but you give me hope that one day I'll learn my terrain and how my chicks can coexist to be happy, healthy and safe. Thank you so much!!!

Totally agree. I became acquainted when I was looking for a coop build and then found the EVERYTHING on Raising CHICKS to Egg Laying HENS video (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-icq7otYnlfQ.html) featuring Kelly once more. Fantastic chicken education here!.

We used coconut oil on our chickens for lice and mites.We had one little hen absolutely riddled with lice with marble sized nit clumps at her feather bases. It was a nightmare. She was covered! We had gotten her recently and she was lowest in the pecking order so we don't know if she came to us with them or she got them late summer when the wild birds share the yard they are in. The other hens were either fine or had a little. I cut out the giant clumps of nits and coated her and the others with coconut oil. Why? Coconut oil breaks down the exoskeletons of live AND destroys nits as well. No adverse reactions, good for the skin. and the lice were pretty much dead and gone. Within 2-3 days we could see not one louse on any of them. Much less expensive and less toxic than the expensive thing you had.

I had to deal with vitamin deficiency this summer. Had no idea what to use so I went to the store emptied the vitamin water shelf and added that to their water. That and gravel mixed with weeds from the garden. I managed to save a bunch. This is a great video. Good work. Love your videos.

Thanks so much, glad you enjoy!!! Thats great you were able to save them, it can be scary and maybe resemble the dreaded Mareks disease. We had a rooster lose the ability to walk and the vitamins made him recover. I was saddened to see all the misinformation on the internet about nutridrench and thought it would be helpful for people to know it will not help with that, they need the riboflavin. Even children's vitamins from local pharmacy will do

Some dried herbs can be used and mixed into the Dust bath area to combat the mites and such. So many to mention, easier to google it. 4. Any thoughts on Wood Ash mixed into the dust bath? 5. I hope you have a Garden sprayer for the Larger areas to debug. Those little 32 ounce sprayers will kill your hands . 😉 6. Love all the info

We use to add some Terramycin to their water. This is going back to when I was a kid almost 45 years ago. It came as a yellow powder. I find terramycin now, but it comes in a salve tube.. anther thing we’d do is put the wood ashes from our wood stove for the hens to dust bath in
@BockBockBouquet
@BockBockBouquet 2 года назад
I had used terramycin about 10 years ago and yes it came in a bag as a yellow powder to be mixed with water. It’s probably still available in that form somewhere. I just found it wasn’t a strong enough solution to heal my sick girl and she needed an injectable antibiotic to get better, so then I found Tylan. I do have a terramycin eye ointment. Oh they love ashes! When we dump wood ash on the ground they always find it to bathe in.

Your video was great, and very thorough! I do have a few things to add, based on my own necessity, which might also be useful to others (I've only had chickens for 2 years, so I'm still learning!!) Some may be obvious, but I made sure to add to my kit anyways so I didn't have to look for them when I was stressed or anxious. I will usually do whatever is needed for my animals, but I still get grossed out and a little prep work makes the stress easier :) * A set of dishwashing gloves (if needed for bathing the chicken) * A small bottle of Dawn dish soap -- for washing chickens, as well as other things * A small package of unscented baby wipes * A small package of disinfectant wipes -- if not for the chicken, for myself and surfaces to clean-up after * Aspirin * Farm/Vet bottle of lubricant (aka KY Jelly -- for egg bound hens) * Cotton Swabs * A couple small disposable drinking cups for liquids, holding tools, etc. * Old towels or rags designated for my first aid kit. * A small tub for bathing -- either outdoors or to set inside a tub or sink (I use this to hold other first aid kit items) * NewSkin with brush applicator * 3m Vetbond Medical Grade Glue -- I had a hen with a comb that wouldn't stop bleeding. Cornstarch, styptic powder, super glue, Hen Healer...none would stop it, and just made a ridiculous mess. There was a lot of blood, and her floppy comb made it worse with every flick of her head. Ultimately, using some NewSkin helped the bleeding stop when nothing else would stick, but I ordered the Vetbond glue, to have on hand. * Disposablle pipettes -- I ordered these for an unrelated craft project, and ended up putting those in my first aid kit. They're cheap, disposable, I can use them to give NutriDrench or crushed calcium pills diluted in water. They might be a little easier to use at times than an irrigating syringe, especially one handed.
@BockBockBouquet

Thank you! Very true we go over that in our bumblefoot video that it’s best to have everything laid out ahead of time so you’re not prepping, having to grab things, or cutting gauze while trying to work on the chicken. We have had to use everything you listed, so very smart to keep together in a kit ready to go :)

Danagard to go along with Tylan. I know it is said that a tolerance will not build up, but if you have my luck the monthly preventative treatment for mycoplasma will develop some kind of super bacteria using the same month after month.

Hello from Wilmington! I just bought my first 2 hens and 7 roosters and your channel has been super helpful! I LOVE your channel! Okay, now that I got that out of the way I wanted to ask if there is any way you can do like “what I do in a day” type thing? Maybe for like a week straight? I know it is a lot to ask but it would be super cool to see your daily feeding routine what you feed the chickens and roosters and how exactly to water them with vinegar one day, vitamins the next… etc like that. Anyways thank you sooo much for sharing all of these super helpful videos! Y’all are amazing and great at what you’re doing! Oh yeah we have a rooster that is limping and we don’t see anything wrong with his legs but that’s when we noticed mites. We are taking your advice on both of these matters and this is how I found your channel. Thanks again! ❤️

Also, I’m not sure if a medical wrap was mentioned (sorry, it’s been awhile since I watched this video & no time to watch again right now), but I’ve got some self-stick bandage wrap I’d saved from when I use to donate plasma (they put gauze on the injection site & wrap your arm afterwards, using more than necessary). I’m assuming it’s similar to the wrap sold for chicken 1st aid, maybe even not as wide & more apropos for smaller areas? It sticks to itself, super easy to use & perfect for a leg. It holds very well, doesn’t need tape to hold in place & doesn’t unravel. It also doesn’t bind because it’s stretchy. (I also use this to wrap together 2 bamboo sticks of almost any size if I need to make a taller support for my plants.). It can be used over & over (easy enough to clean, if necessary, too); I’ve yet to find it’s stick-factor or integrity gives out, at least after a few uses.
@BockBockBouquet
@BockBockBouquet 2 года назад
Yes sounds perfect! Doesn’t matter if it’s sold for animals or humans. That sticky wrap has many uses and we are actually posting a video this weekend about it! You can use that great, and if you ever run out the one sold at the pet or feed stores is called vetwrap

Don’t worry, sometimes they go through a light molt that’s barely noticeable or it could just the the less daylight hours. Maybe she was scared by a predator, many things can stop their laying at the drop of a hat. But just as quickly as they stop, they can go back to laying in no time.

Kelly, ever heard of chickens not drinking water that has ACV added? I have a typical (1 Gal?) waterer they frequently drink from but would not touch it after I’d added a sm amt (1-2 T?).
@BockBockBouquet
@BockBockBouquet 2 года назад
I would forgo the ACV then, it’s more important for them to just drink water than that. You can have a perfectly healthy flock without ACV :) some chickens are picky about their waterers. I had a sick rooster who wouldn’t drink his medicated water but liked the real water. So I had to orally syringe his dose to him daily because it is more important to drink the water

If using liquid corid the dose on the liquid is 9.6 ml's, or 2 teaspoons to make it easy, per gallon. So for a quart you would use 2.5 ml's, or half a teaspoon & make fresh daily. The dose for the powder is 3/4 to 1 teaspoon per gallon for moderate to severe outbreak, the or you can do up to 9.6% is two teaspoons per manufactures directions. Better to be aggressive and treat coccidiosis ASAP and not worry too much as the disease is a fast killer. Good luck with your babies ❤️

Thanks for this video. Fairlly new chicken mom here, I love it ... so much to learn; I have a couple questions: mid/late winter it got very cold and almost overnight, i noticed chickens feathers changed from beautiful to looking more downy like (not all their feathers on all birds but some more than others especially mr rooster), they did not molt prior to winter, so I thought that might have had something to do with it but they still kind of look like that, what could that be and is there anything i could do to help this? Also, noticed some feathers missing on the back and couple on head of hens (no blood, likely too much lov'en from mr rooster ... not enough hens to rooster so correcting this now) but also on the rooster on his back is a little spot and below tail feathers looks inflamed red unlike the hens who just look plucked, what could this be and is there nything i should do to these missing feather spots to help them heal?
@BockBockBouquet
@BockBockBouquet 3 года назад
Sounds like a moult which can be completely normal, they usually go through mini molts while growing into adulthood and have their first real molt at about 18 months old and then a yearly molt thereafter. Another thing to check for is mites/lice (especially by their vent) the eggs will be laid on the feather shaft close to the skin. Upping their protein will help their feathers grow back, we use black soldier fly larvae and feed thier eggs scrambled back to them. Hopefully a regular molt is all that is! We have a few going through it right now, some did before winter but the ones that haven’t are going through it right now as well

You can add oak tea to the chickens water. I give all my animals oak tea, my chickens have never been sick. If you have oak trees (all oak trees good) you can take any part of an oak tree as long as it is alive,(except acorns)boil it in water as long as you wish. I prefer to make my tea dark which you can get with the root. Leaves will give you a light to dark tea depending on the amount of leaves you use. You can also use branches, because of the inner bark,(no need to strip away the outer bark.) You can also reuse the oak, just let it air dry. I let mine sit on a plastic lid in my cabinet. You only need to change the leaves, branches or root when the water no longer changes color. My husband and I also drink oak tea, we like it sweet, hot or cold. You can not over dose so feel free to drink as much as you want. Oak is an antidote as well, so if someone or an animal is in need of an antidote this helps. I have used oak a few times as an antidote, sometimes you don't even know you need an antidote. You can also use oak tea as a wash for rashes like poison ivy.

With scratch and peck feed, do you soak it or just put it in the grandma feeder? I am trying to make sure they will eat all of it and not toss it. Mine like the grind better than the pellets but they like to pick and toss some of them. I have had some with vitamin deficiencies that I have been trying to figure out if it's the feed and what are they lacking. I have one recovering after 3 weeks and is separated but is doing a little stumble. I used Nutridrench, Vitamin E, Poultry Cell and scrambled eggs. Anything else you suggest? Have you heard of people using poly vi sol?
@BockBockBouquet
@BockBockBouquet 2 года назад
Fermenting it is a great way to get rid of the mash, make is more nutritional and make your feed go a longer way as it makes a larger quantity once soaked. I wouldn’t add it to the grandpas feeder once soaked. We just mix the mash around with our hand in the feeder if we think it looks like less grains and more mash. Usually works well for us, our flock will eat the pellets but we think they prefer the mash so we get that instead. What are their symptoms? Poultry cell has a lot of the vitamins they need to combat vitamin deficiency. We will add brewers yeast or nutritional yeast to their feed or scrambled eggs as times because we do have a special needs rooster that suffers from curled toe paralysis riboflavin deficiency. He came to us that way from the breeder so we have to give him vitamin treatments time to time

Make sure to clean their butts. Check for lice and mites. If there are any egg sacs on the feather shafts by their vents. If not pests, is it chronic? Or did it just start to happen? Could just be the stress in the change of season and ho away on its own after you clean them. Could also be a sign of internal infection or something else wrong. Another Q! 🙄 My girls won’t eat eggshells (from THEIR eggs, not store bought), even if I grind them into sm bits or even to dust & mix into their pellets or in a prepared food concoction they love👉 they ♥️scrambled eggs, short grain brown rice, garlic, fresh ginger & red pepper flakes. They also love plain Greek yogurt & cottage cheese & block cheeses, but I’ve read it’s best to limit dairy (but online info also can be very varied). Any suggestions on how to keep their calcium levels high, or would normal laying feed pellets cover that well enough?
@ncognito7137
@ncognito7137 2 года назад
Oh, and they snub oyster shell, too.
@BockBockBouquet
@BockBockBouquet 2 года назад
Layer feed is usually good enough, they self regulate how much calcium they need and having a dish of oyster shell available at all times is good because they just will occasionally pick at it. We lean more natural in our poultry keeping and usually just offer things that would be part of a naturally chickens foraging diet. I haven’t dove down into much research about the truth about giving dairy to chickens as we as a household don’t consume much dairy so it would be rare for us to give them it as we don’t have food scraps of it often. We offer kale and other veggies full of calcium and black soldier fly larvae is also very high in calcium. Too much calcium can damage their kidneys and isn’t good for young chickens not laying yet and roosters actually. If we have young pullets mixed into our laying flock we put the whole flock on grower feed till all are laying then switch back to laying feed. You can also hardboil eggs and just mash them up shell and all and feed that to your flock, they’ll eat the shells.

I can find a limited selection on Amazon UK ( made for Pigeon fanciers but works for all birds ) and ordering across the Atlantic is too far for such a basic item. My Dad bought some powder in East Europe outside of the EU. I had a sick bird and gave it half a Pigeon dose for 7 days ( 25 mg to be on the safe side ) but this wasn't enough and it relapsed and died within 1 day from being recovered. It died so fast that I didn't have time to start another cure even as I had the product, it was sneaky because the previous infection site ( on the digits ) had healed and it looked healthy and active, until I pressed on the leg muscles which had swollen 2x the width. Next time I will follow the amount + add another 20 to 50 %. The relapse of a bacteria is awful strong because you get multiplication of the few ( strongest ) bacteria which happened to survive, this mechanism is often confused with "resistance" but it's not resistance, but too little product for too little time, + my bird had stomach issues and was underweight which maybe resulted inability to absorb the medicine, hence why a shot is probably superior. Well anyway. Next time I won't hesitate.

How come I’ve never caught one of your videos before now?!? First time chicken owner since July 2021 (9 mos now) & I’ve had to learn all on my own (mostly internet research & some store employee advice). “Easy care” is what I was told before accepting them. NOT! I ‘inherited’ 5 chickens plagued by poultry mites & lice AND they still are, after MUCH time & 💰consumed! Not something you want to take on when moving into a home purchase! I was trying to find Blu-Kote locally...now with your comments, I’m curious as to why you’re not terribly fond of it. I’d only read great online reviews. My hen has been plucking her chest feathers out due to the mites and it’s down to the raw skin now. Poor girl. I did a DIY of hand-melted coconut oil & Shea, which seemed to calm it down some. Then bought some Vetericyn & used last 2 days. Seems to help & she’s less reactive to the application (it’s a pump spray). Love your video - SUPER helpful! Will make sure to watch more! Thank you soooo much! P.S. my girls will avoid dust bathing if I mix DE into where they’ve been bathing. They’re very suspect of anything different. When I manually apply it, I don’t find it relieves their itching, either. 🤷‍♀️

@BockBockBouquet 2 года назад
Welcome to our channel! ❤️ Sorry you’re off to a creepy crawly bad start! Chickens usually are great and easy, just once you get rid of those mites, be sure to check out our video on mites I’ll link below. You need elector psp to get rid of them and DE is just a preventative, it will do nothing to eradicate an infestation and is actually quite dangerous if inhaled, we don’t even bother with it anymore to be honest. Vetricyn is a great product and probably our most used, if a bird is bleeding we spray that to clean it and use a wound dust powder styptic powder to stop the bleeding. It’s a cornstarch material and stops the bleeding ASAP!Also conceals the wound to prevent the flock from picking. And I guess that’s why we love it over blu kote. I may have been too harsh in the video on the blu kote lol we do use it often, it’s great for when we see a cut that’s not bleeding to prevent infection, and to prevent the flock from picking on or trying to cannibalize the wound. The blue blocks the red blood color so they won’t pick it. We spray it on roosters combs if we see a scab, or on a superficial cut type wound on a foot. It does have many great uses and I suppose we use it very often. Sorry about your girl, she’ll grow those feathers back after her annual molt. And then she’ll look good as new! It may take some time though. Just make sure the flock doesn’t pick on her, you may want to add vitamins to their feed or water as mites can make them anemic. Here’s our lice and mites video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-w8cCacg1RK8.html

You’re great, Kelly! You even respond (& promptly, at that!) with more helpful advice! I looked up Blu-Kote and right away found it’s not meant for poultry or any animals that are in any way for human consumption, & I’m assuming that’s eggs, too. I’ll try the dust first. I haven’t seen the other chickens peck at her chest, although, of all the chickens, she’s the one that gets a random bullying peck at the head when it doesn’t seem warranted (meaning, she’s not encroaching on others’ space, etc). It’s not a lot but I see it, mostly at nite before they nod off. They have their preferred roosts so there’s no reason for them to peck her when they’re all in their chosen places. Yes, I will look at your video on mites! I’ve got the one (organic) spray you mentioned (damn pricey!) & the permethrin (10% liquid & the .25 dusting powder). Even in warmer temps, they don’t like the spray on them & it causes quite a commotion. Dusting is MUCH easier to apply & doesn’t stress them, albeit, lower concentration. I was disappointed that the DE didn’t make any effect when dusting them. And, as I’d said, they won’t use their dust sites if I blend the DE into it. I find they most often now do their dust bathing in the duff & pine needles, but they’re going back gradually to again tearing up the dirt in the flower beds. And, yes, I put on full garb (mask, often a face shield & gloves & don/doff particular clothing to hot wash right after spraying) when dealing with these sprays & DE stuff. So, when you said wild birds are what brings in the mites, does that mean the filthy coop that I started off with (the former owners apparently hadn’t done a coop clean for 6 months!) wasn’t the culprit for attracting the mites in the 1st place? In reading online, that was my understanding, that the filthy coop was the cause. Is it more secondary then, just making the problem perpetuate? In that case, I clean out the poop every day, but even with spraying the coop it does nada (although, I’ll admit, staying on a weekly deep cleaning & spray schedule has been difficult due to lack of time & col, rainy weather where it then won’t dry so I skip it then!) I’ve only had 1:5 hens go thru a molt so far. The hen who is plucking her feathers, that’s not a molt. She had a full chest area plucked down to the fine feathers when I took them on. It’s been a quick way to i.d.her from the other RIR (they act like sisters & stick together). The other RIR needs to be bathed to get those crusty lice eggs removed, but she’d been molting & unable to handle so I’d delayed it. Ending on a much-needed positive, at least the girls are being treated like queens now vs being neglected before (fmr owners did diddly squat!). They never let them out of their dry, boring run & obviously hadn’t ever handled them & that’s been a slow process to get them use to that (handling, that is - free ranging is expected from them now! LOL). Ironically, the one that was a major bully has greatly toned down that behavior & joins in the group more often now vs being at bay. She’s the one who seems to need the 1:1 holding, stroking & gentle talking more than the others. She quickly on melts & soaks up the attn w/o any resistance. And isn’t quick to leave my lap when my arm is no longer wrapped around her to hold her in place. :-)

@BockBockBouquet 2 года назад
@@ncognito7137 so glad those girls found you! They are very loving animals and are great pets. Bullying can be apart of boredom. But that’s chickens for you with their pecking order, they seem to do it for no reason to us but very complex social heirarchy to them! They don’t like sprays but it’s very effective, the dusts just don’t have the strength to eradicate infestation. The liquid elector spray will kill all lice and mites eggs. The eggs are cemented onto the feather shafts and all though they will be dead and not hatch after being sprayed, they are permanent. The eggs will not go away until they molt those feathers or cut the feathers off. We left the dead eggs on our flocks feathers, they never hatched and after they molted they were gone for good. Yes exactly it was perpetuated. The birds bring the mites in, they don’t just appear from filthy conditions, the filthy conditions just made the environment neglect fully suitable. Once the mites are treated, dead and gone and coop cleaned they will be gone, only way to get them again is if you introduce new hens to your flock that have an infestation or a possibility from wild birds but if contact is low so is that possibility. Check out our chicken feed playlist or our diy playlist. We have lots of boredom busting ideas there to keep the girls busy and not bullying each other. One of our favorites is we have grazing boxes for them. A raised garden bed with fencing on top so the girls can only eat what grows through the top and they can’t scratch and kill the roots. Keeps our flock busy all day! Free ranging will definitely give them the space for less bullying as well
@ncognito7137
@ncognito7137 2 года назад
I don’t know if it’s because they have 2/3 acres to roam around on now or if it’s because the former owners kept them confined to a dry dirt boring run & never interacted with them, but they don’t take to ‘entertainment’ like I read about online. Even whole food, like a suspended cabbage to peck at, they wouldn’t. They act like it’s too much trouble! I’ve provided a variety of things but they just go about their same-o same-o daily business. I think because they had an unstimulating past, they’re more wary of anything new vs interested. Same goes for food treats they’re ‘suppose’ to like/love. At least this (that they’ve been conditioned) is my guesstimate as to WHY they don’t take to commonly liked chicken things.
@ncognito7137
@ncognito7137 2 года назад
Kelly, in regard to my 1:2 Rhode Island Reds, the more assertive (but NOT aggressive) one gets pecked in the head & nearly the eyes at nite by one particular hen & it’s done really nastily. I’ll go wrapped my hands around that (pecking) one’s wings (so she won’t take off) or lay a gentle but firm hand on her back (to calm) to get her to stop. It seems more than pecking order happening. I’m actually surprised the other RIR isn’t the one getting pecked because she’s more recessive & seems more a likely vulnerable target. Maybe she doesn’t get bothered because she doesn’t try to move up the pecking order, so she’s left alone? In any event, the original primary bully, Beulah, the Orpington, pecks less now than this other one will. She toned it down significantly when I began giving her 1:1 in my lap. I need to get back to doing that with all of them. Their no-handling before me seems to mean I need to be handling all of them A LOT more so they don’t get too reactive or crotchety. It all takes time...(that I typically don’t have, in chunks).
