These are perhaps the cheapest widely available sardine brand that people talk about eating and enjoying. Today, I got to see what the fuss was about. Are they a great deal? Or should you spend another couple bucks on The Red Wrapper? Let's find out!

Chicken of the Sea and King Oscar are owned by the same company. Both are "product of Poland", and both are sprats. Makes me wonder if they're the same catch, packaged in the same cannery, and the higher quality goes to KO and the lower quality goes to CotS. Also, in my opinion, CotS's Sardines in EVOO is no different to KO's aside from presentation. I eat them 2-3 times a week. I just wish their hot sauce was hot.

Most Mustard Sardines are just Ok, The Mustard is really a sauce, what happens is the mustard and sardines kind of react against each other, making the fish a tad mushy, and the mustard a bit loose and weak, but ad a tad of salt & pepper and they are good...

This are great for spreads. Just mix them in food processor with some butter, bit of oil, put mustard, salt, black pepper. Spread on toast top with finely chopped onions or green onions and you will be fine. Alone are not as great.

Probably they’re as weird as I am. I was born in Decatur, Illinois and spent the first 20 years of my life there, and there’s probably more oil extracted from soybeans there (usually using a mix of solvents that’s basically gasoline) than anywhere else in the world. I avoid the stuff because I’m getting too much in the way of omega-6 fatty acids already.

If you are a Costco member, on a regular basis they have a 6-pack of quality sardines in olive oil for less than $8. I'd go that route vs. the cheesy Chicken of the Sea sardines in soybean oil.

The Safe Catch and Season are boneless & skinless. Occassionaly they have Wild Planet which has bones & skin. I know the Wild Planet is healthier, I like sardines, but if I have a chose I go for the boneless & skinless.@@crabwalk7773

Cool, welcome to the "school" or shoal!! LOL. That's the "gateway deen", now step up to KO's tiny tots, they are so small that you do not notice the innards, or spine, if that is off-putting to some folks in the bigger ones, and somewhat mild in flavor to my taste. It's my "go to" fish that is locked up in confinement!! ;D LOL

We've picked up these same three cans. The soybean oil ones we never got again; the others aren't worth eating on their own. But toast up some Hawaiian bread, toss a slice of cheese on, and upend half a tin on each slice and it's quite tasty, especially for the price. We generally split the mustard and Louisiana hot sauce for a single lunch; the variety is nice, and the toast improves the texture.

I buy the olive oil ones in bulk and mash two cans into three cups of cooked rice. They dissapear, but still taste great.

I ate all my other numerous cans of deens before preparing for the hot sauce ones, and I have to say, I really liked the hot sauce deens. They were pretty spicy, but full of flavor. Most cheap deens are a miss for me, because they taste slightly musty imo, but the hot sauce deens are awesome and i will happily buy them again

Interesting thing about chicken of the sea is that in Japan it’s apparently so unanimous that (at least my girlfriend) just refers to canned tuna as “sea chicken”. When I first heard her say that I was eating “sea chicken” when I made a tuna melt I was confused to say the least

My favorite is the Mediterranean style sardines from CotS. Its light, has some seasoning to it, slightly salty. It definitely my go to for sardines.

Seriously, for even a small amount more per can (50 cents) one's deen quality can be massively improved. These and Beach Cliffs are pretty much the bottom rung for every metric. Well, Matthew is at least being nice about it.

I usually find the cheap hot sauce deens to be the most disappointing as they typically rely on cheap hot sauce made from extracts and oleoresins which always results in a bad aftertaste. Similar to sticking your tongue on a 9v battery

I always share a few sprats from whatever brand I’m eating with my dog. She really loves KO, Brunswick, and Polar as do I. She especially likes Nuri pilchards. Chicken of the Sea? That’s a big fat nope. My pop once gave his cat some Beach Cliff dines. Cat gave it the middle paw and walked away. I stay away from those bottom basement tier dines as the money I spend on them would be better spent on quality dines. Thanks man for taking one for the team. Mahalo oh grand sardine funk master!

Once mustard had been cooked it loses that punchiness and adopts a more savory character. And COS must be overcooking the sprats in the canning process for them to be in that condition. Maybe by reducing the time the fish would be firmer

Yes, I like all deens well enough, and with a little Dejon mustard on them, nice and fresh from the bottle and not in the tin with the little fishies. That, and a little salt, some dill pickles and crunchy Ritz crackers, a glass of white wine, and that's what chef Alton Brown used to call some "Good Eats"!! :D

Yes, with most foods it does; and with "hard sell" stuff like deens it's especially so. I like them lined up like little "tinned soldiers", as in KO's tiny tots, and ready for the fate that befalls them, like all soldiers do!! ;D

I used to get these every 2 weeks or so. I'd get one flavor for every day of the work week and the water and smoked ones were pretty good to me, but eventually I got sick of them and rarely had the appetite for it. Just got back into sardines with KO and excited to start going for better quality brands and different kinds of fish.

The last can of sardines I had was the soybean oil one. Presentation was ghastly, but the fish either melted in my mouth or disintegrated depending on how charitable you feel in your language. For a quick snack before bedtime it wasn’t the worst, but there was a lot to be desired. Love this channel! Can’t wait to get paid so I can buy some more expensive cans and try them out!

Canned fish is definitely an acquired taste; start fresh if you arent big on seafood. Start at shrimp or cod, then branch out to salmon, and on and on with time. Im still trying to get the hang of canned fish ,- I take a bite and have to psyche myself out of instinctive gag reflex because I want to like them. (When I see him take a bite I look for the slight muscle tensing or gag movement - it astonishes me others dont have this reaction to seafood tbh).

Regardless of the cultural aspect, it just makes sense to eat canned sardines with chop-sticks from a purely mechanical perspective (the small ones anyway)... a fork would ruin it and it requires a fine tweezer-like instrument due to the delicate texture of the fish.

These were my first dines i tried after my doctor recommended them to me. They arent too bad and the price was right. My blood pressure dropped about a month into a can a day and I didnt need to take meds anymore (not advice just my experience).

I like skinless & boneless sardines in olive oil with some toasted French bread. I started eating them after a trip to Spain when I was a young man. I came accross the exact 3 cans the other day at a dollar tree store and decided to try them. I thought the skin and bones would taste fishy but they did not. These were not bad but I will stick to my preferred skinless and boneless packed in olive oil.

I assumed that these would pretty much be the same thing as the Great Value brand deens at Walmart because of the similar packaging. But these don't look too great.

Facts.. they're packed kind of messy and they do fall apart really easy, which makes them pretty easy to slog back. Packed in olive oil, they are completely unoffensive and super mild and at the price, they're a perfect daily driver if you're trying to save money. I have experience with king oscar, polar, bumblebee, aldi brands (terrible), beachcliff (almost as bad as aldi) and of the budget brands, these chicken of the sea in oil/olive oil varieties are the best of them. I've got 16 dozen varieties of king oscar and polar on the way this week. Can't wait to start my daily lunch routine.

I am spoiled...the low end deens for me are KO. Soybean oil makes me break out in hives, COS brand are cost effective but just not my can of sprats. Thanks Matthew!

This channel inspired me to try sardines, and so far Chicken of the Sea lightly smoked in soybean oil are my favorite. The KOs and several other more expensive brands in olive oil all tasted very dry.

I had my first can of sardines the other day. I'm glad I found your channel. These things always scared me, but seeing seeing what is actually in the can helped a lot. I'm really glad I went with King Oscar. The presentation goes a long way.

The COTS sardines in olive oil are pretty good. I never liked canned sardines till I tried those. Makes a huge difference when they are packed in olive oil. All the ones in water or soybean oil or cottonseed oil tastes crappy to me but the ones in olive oil are way better.

heat one side until black, rotate said preffed can to the other side until once a Mustard flavour has been acquired. Both well uhhh both uh food :)

WOW....very cool about Grace Lee Whitney!!!! As a brand though....I don't trust Chicken of the Sea. And yeah....Soybean oil...no way. Thank you for your sacrifice.
