My latest batch of chickens (rescue hens) are a mean bunch of girls and straight away started to pick on one bird when they had to stop free ranging due to the avian flu lockdown (flockdown). I decided to give them a bit more space, and to make their lives a bit more interesting, by using the tunnels I used to use in the veg garden to create some chicken tunnels. These tunnels are covered in netting to make them comply.
I needed to build some corner connectors and now this set up is completely adjustable, in just a few minutes I can change the layout of the pen or connect two pens together! Lots of possibilities.
All connected there is an extra 46ft length in their run!
Thanks for watching!

The chunnel will give them so much more space to roam! Love that you reused materials you already had. Well done.

Thank you! Yes they love it and seem to be getting on much better with their extra space.

The tunnels are a great idea! The chickens obviously like them. I appreciated seeing you in your workshop too! Well done!! Your audio is crystal clear when you're facing the camera but becomes difficult to make out what you're saying when you turn away from it and keep talking. I recommend that when you plan the video, plan to always face the camera.

Yeah good point! I'll try to keep that in mind next time. I could do with a mic really.

Brilliant!! Love it. Kris made me mini polytunnels on the raised beds while I've been waiting for him to build the greenhouse. I'm going to do this! I need to extend my run for the third time 😬. And I love your garden,.... even the messy bits!

It's given an extra 46ft of run with them all added together. I'll be keen to see what you create!

Loving your work Kev! They were definitely happy to see grass 👍

They certainly were! It's an extra 46ft of run so hopefully should stop them picking on each other.

chickens as well as other livestock will become more aggressive if they do not have enough sleeping or run space. Good job with making chicken tunnels. consider building a bigger coop space.

More space would be the ideal, but this only came around because of the lockdown rules. The rest of my other flocks weren't aggressive towards each other at all. As these were ex industrial birds that had been living in sheds of 10,000 birds each they were just a bit more aggressive towards each other. The space helped, but also a bit of time has really mellowed them where they've realised that they don't have to fight quite so hard to stay up in the pecking order. If you saw these birds today they're so much calmer. Although it's been much better this year as the restrictions haven't been in place over winter so that's helped as well.

I love the fact that you used what you already had, I was wondering , have they ever tried to push out through the mesh , i'm wanting to do this for mine but some of my girls can be very thug ish lol.

They really did go at any gap and a few times I had to put some reenforcements in the netting and at the bottom!

@@englishhomestead happy hens are just the best. They're absolute *demons* though when they're not happy. Hens will take over the world someday, mark my words.

What are the dimension of the wooden frames & how high did you place the hoops. Thank you so much for sharing. I've wanted to make tunnels, but hadn't figured out the 90⁰ turn.
@englishhomestead
@englishhomestead Год назад
Thanks for watching! They're about 820mm wide, and 720 high. The 90 degrees turns are just simple squares, by putting the hoops both ways on the turns it works well for the T pieces. or if you wanted a cross section.

GreT stuff. Why are the chickens having to be locked down?

Because of avian flu, it's to try and prevent the spread of it in domestic flocks. They have to be kept away from wild birds.
