Thinking about keeping Chickens in a Polytunnel over Winter? My Pros and Cons

If like me you’ve trudged through snow and sleet and hail and rain (and mud!) for months on end to tend to your flocks over winter, you’ve maybe considered options for alternative accommodation for your chickens during the harshest months. Here are my findings on keeping chickens in a polytunnel (good and bad) and would I do it again?

What lucky chickens to be so well looked after. Very interesting video and so glad you are all safe xx

They still tell everyone they are neglected and that we steal their eggs 😂

Thanks for this. I have had chickens for a year now and have struggled to winterise their run so I found this video really interesting. I have managed to cobble something together that does keep them dry and safe though it looks very "heath robinson". I have a metal frame run with 1/2inch galvanised mesh over it. My question is, how did you manage to fix the wooden batons at the door end of your polytunnel to the metal frame?

So sorry, I missed your comment coming in! I decided to give this method a go after quite a bit of research and like I said in the video, it has its pros and cons. Overall it’s working well but I do have stress during the storms we’ve been having 🫣 Anyway, the wooden frame at the door end is made from 2x4 timber and I can’t honestly remember exactly how we did it now! It was very much made up on-the-spot as we went along but essentially we have sandwiched the metal frame between two sets of timber - one on the inside, one on the outside. That was the method throughout, and the cover is also sandwiched between two sets of timbers to trap it. Sorry that probably doesn’t help you an awful lot 🤔🤦🏻‍♀️ If you want to DM me on Instagram I can send some pictures if that helps? 🤷🏼‍♀️

No, chickens need hard walls between them and predators - at least at night.

They are inside a wooden henhouse at night, within the wire which is wrapped around the tunnel frame. That’s how we’ve always kept chickens here. The layer of plastic from the polytunnel gives them protection from the weather only ☺️

@@ourhighlandhomestead :) It sounds like a great set up and I love your pros and cons. I kept chickens for many years until our town got bigger and banned them. I sure miss them but I do remember the work too. One time a hawk got a chicken but I managed to quickly get the chicken back from the hawk and she lived a long and happy life after her wing/breast healed. The chicken was just a few meters away from me when the hawk grabbed it and I just snatched it back. Quick reflexes and luck. LOL. The chickens became experts at spotting hawks.
