This year is already developing into an interesting year of supply issues for the homesteader. Is this a North Idaho problem or does it reach far beyond our borders. One thing for sure is U.S. supplies are having a difficult time keeping up with demand.

So much fun having chicks around!

Not when they are dying like this. We have never lost a chick before in the brooder. We have been trouble shooting like crazy. I finally fired up the generator and put the heat lamp on, but it has done nothing to stop the death toll. We have worked with chickens these past 9 years and have never seen anything like this. The 15 that are left look good. I may play the generator game and use the heat lamp until we get clear of whatever is happening here. I think it has something to do with their GI tract.

@@LivingaSustainableDream oh no! Very curious as to why. We have never had that problem before either. Fingers crossed the rest make it.

Talked to N40 today. They are having problems with shipper, USPS?, leaving chicks on the dock with no food, no water, no heat, just room temperature. The stress is too much for the peeps. Lots of refunds for lost birds this season.

@@LivingaSustainableDream that’s sad! They are extremely vulnerable! The refunds are good but feel bad for the little ones that suffered 😢

It is sad and cruel. 15 peeps have survived and appear to be doing well. We are using the electric heat lamp and generating when we need too. 10% drop in battery bank every 4-5 hours. Just to help the survivors thrive from the stress they endured. 1st year we ever lost a chick, let alone 10.

I am in southwest Montana. Murdocks where I buy my chicken feed was having some trouble getting chicks. When I went in a weeks or so ago I asked if they got them in and the kid said yes but they were bought up so fast he said he never saw them. I'm thinking of waiting till it warms up a little more then maybe order from hoover hatchery in Iowa. I got my buffs from them last year. I got 2 roosters in the batch and they are sooooo mean ! So I need to get them replaced. I want to go with some that have maybe a rose comb as I had trouble with frost bite on them. God bless. Hope you don't lose any more !!

Mary Lou we have now lost 10 out of the 25 as of this comment this morning. My wife and I are pretty sad because the flock has been decimated by almost half, and there are no more chicks to replace them with. If you hear of others losing their peeps like this, please let us know. Thanks for your comment. God Bless.

Peeps were a struggle to get last year, haven't tried yet this year. Ammo, a definite issue to get , and canning lids have been a struggle since last year. I live in Michigan.

Jennifer, I am sorry to here Michigan is in the same supply debacle as N. Idaho. Keep us posted if things change. Thank you for your comment. Mary Lou from SW Montana is having the same issue with chicks. See her comment.

Missed you guys!!! Not a chicken owner... wife says no. But to that, the local Tractor's Supply and Rural King has chicks. Don't know about breeds they have but they are there. I am in Central (Bluegrass Region) Kentucky. God Bless, stay safe.

@Joey, Kentucky, I am glad you guys are good to go. You are the 1st positive chick supply I have heard from today from both RU-vid and our website's blog. How's the canning lid and ammo situation?

@@LivingaSustainableDream Nothing at ACE local or next county. Walmart has jars every day. Stocked up on Wide mouth pints and quarts. LM lids about once a month and RM rings and bands every couple of weeks. I am not a hoarder but an opportunistic buyer and get a couple each time I am in Walmart. Powdered Pectin and Pickling Spice is in there and at the same price as last year. Ammo is available at the local store, too high to buy though. WM had some 45-70 last week, sat there for about a week. Big box stores in Lexington has nothing.

I live in PA. I have not got chick's yet but a lot of things I have shopped for on line have been limited supply. I usually don't see that but this year it's common.

Kevin, I am also finding shortages on Amazon. Yet, I find the same products at other smaller stores online for a better price with the added shipping cost. Amazon is making so much money during the closures, yet they are price gouging.

Quick update. Was in our local Southern States Coop and they had chicks. 5 varieties all common $3.25 - 4.50 each. BUT, they had Orpington chicks... $8 each. Don't know if that's a good price or not. About 20 of each.

@@LivingaSustainableDream OH, that is so sad. I lost my dad yesterday, he was 85, lived a great life, preacher to hundreds, teacher to thousands and loved my mom and us four kids. Death comes but to animals that were not taken the best of care to start with, sad.
