In time for Chico's 130th birthday, I have made a fan edit of some of my favorite clips of Chico. I DO NOT OWN ANY OF THE CLIPS. All clips go to their rightful owners. This is just for entertainment purposes. Enjoy!
If you love Harpo Marx, and if you want to read a truly FANTASTIC autobiography, you must read HARPO SPEAKS. Lemme tell ya, ol' Harpo was a pretty amazing man and led a pretty amazing, colorful life!
A friend sent it to me last month along with the one written by Harpo's widow, Susan Fleming Marx. They're both immensely readable, especially the former.
Their playing is pure dead brilliant....then now and even tomorrow! Thanks Harpo,Chico & Groucho for your comical genius. Never dated always funny! :) :) :)
@ Emma Dean. The only reason Zeppo was in the Marx Brothers' films was to provide the audience with a temporary relief from the comic zanniness of Groucho, Harpo and Chico by adding a romantic element to their movies with whatever beautiful actress his character was involved (or trying to get involved) with romantically. According to Groucho, Zeppo was not a very nice man in his personal life. Supposedly Zeppo was one of the inventors/creators of the pocket-sized cigarette lighter. Supposedly he made a huge profit on the manufacture and/or sale of cigarette lighters.
In the early '70s, Groucho Marx was asked by a TV talk show host how he thought his brother Chico, with whom he had performed for so many years, would be remembered by the entertainment industry. Groucho paused thoughtfully, then replied, "I think he'll be best remembered...as the man who introduced gonorrhea to the vaudeville circuit."
For as great as Groucho was, it was always Chico and Harpo that stole the show for me, their dynamic was so perfect: the kind hearted, fast talking idiot and the mute, chaotic genius. Some of the best gags in the movies were between the two of them
Groucho is my least favorite of the 3. He even looks different from the other 4. Look at a pic of all 5 of them when they were older. They are out of costume. Groucho stands out among the other brothers.
A lot of people choose Chico or Groucho for their great lines , yet everyone forgets Harpo's famous ",,,,,,,,,,,,"! " or his < HonkHonk > or even his ( puts leg over your arm )......a true Master of Dialogue (or its lack )
roger white When they were just beginning to develop their personas for the act Harpo made up an Irish character. When the brothers were reading reviews of the act the harshest comment was for Harpo’s performance. It was written that his speech and accent were so bad nothing he said was able to be understood. That’s when he decided “Then I won’t say anything.” It was the perfect character to throw in the mix. Chico was my favorite. He was talented, funny, sweet, and I just wait for him to open his mouth, or sit down on that piano bench. My first computer password was “swordfish”.
Also the trick shots lol, that little bang bang shot with his finger, and the backwards hand swipe, guy's a show off 🤣 Edit - honestly had me transfixed as a child though, him and Harpo both when they do their musical scenes, it's *always* amazed me too. 😁
@0:15 A time when the director knew where to aim the camera. Watch a music video today, and all you see are dancers and singers, and almost always performing to a studio recording (lip syncing). You almost never see the band members creating the music. You never get to see their talented fingers. Of course Chico and Harpo had tremendous talent, and this scene allowed us to see it without any camera theatrics or special effects. Just raw talent, and we had a front seat view. Today, talented artists have been replaced with computer generated scenes and all manner of studio processing -- it just isn't real. Whereas, this scene is real, and is why it is great.
Yes yes... I was always proud to have grown up a block away from where the Marx Brothers grew up. I too come from a family of talented brothers but they come NOWHERE NEAR these boys!!! They made me laugh a lot when I was a child and even more now!!!
@MichaelKingsfordGray You are such a troll, you do realize you are in the minority? Less people use their real name on a youtube account than a made up one. What's it to you if someone uses a nickname? I can't believe the amount of comments you've wrote slagging people off for this 😂 get a life dude. Edit - yours sincerely, Karen McCall 🤣
I love at 1:35 the woman on the left has to turn around and hide her face from the camera because she's laughing so hard. The MB were so incredibly talented and funny.
On my husband's account-That is VERY FUNNY,I laugh pretty hard too when Harpo jumps up & down. That scene is from their final movie The Big Store. They then retired. But then a few years later came out of retirement to make A Night in Casablanca'cuz Chico needed to pay off his gambling debts. They were all geniuses'of their craft.R.I.P. Marx Brothers
Chico rules, always my favorite Marx bro. They said if you spent 30 minutes with Groucho you would think he was the most amazing person ever, if you spent 30 minutes with Chico you would think YOU were the most amazing person ever. Apparently he really knew how to make others feel good about themselves.
Groucho was the best read man in show business. His private collection of books gave him what would otherwise be an enviable college education. Chico was a math whiz, but he used it to figure long odds and wound up losing far more than he could ever win. His gambling addiction cost the brothers hundreds of thousands of dollars. Harpo was simply a lovely man, who lived the life he portrayed. He wasn't innocent, but he was just a sweet person whose love for children and animals was only surpassed by his love of music. He was another genius in the family, but practically illiterate.
Harpo played several instruments perfectly, so it showed that he was extremely smart, amazingly talented, and apparently didn't miss much without several years' education. Nobody can just pick up a piano, harp, clarinet, cello, etc so effortlessly and produce such beautiful music.
@@VictoriaD36 He taught himself the harp, but learned piano by copying Chico's lessons when he got home. One of his earliest gigs as a child was as a pianist in a whore house. He played one song called "Waltz me around Willie", but in different keys and tempos. He played piano, harp, clarinet, harmonica, and wrote music as well. The man was a genius in every sense of the word.
Worked in an office with a very incompetent manager. On the wall we had a framed picture of the Marx brothers with the sign of " Our hero's!". Kept us going !!!
I think Laurel & Hardy stand up just as well. Regardless, whether it's the Marx Brothers or The Boys, I'm still laughing hysterically at their antics today!
Yeah, these guys are a classic, HOWEVER, Nobody and I mean NOBODY can ever beat Moe Larry and Curly, or even Shemp, The Three Stooges! They were PURELY THE VERY BEST OF THE BEST!
@ Dan Basta. The Three Stooges were very funny, but they were not at the level of comedic greatness as the Marx Brothers! Groucho's humor was a much more enjoyable, more sophisticated form of comedy than the Three Stooges.
I loved the Marx Brothers. I discovered their movies on local late night TV when I was in college. Chico was my favorite! I never felt he got his due. Of course, as long as he got his check so his gambling could continue he was fine with that. He was flawed, but he has my heart.
"You pay a little, we a little tough. You pay enough, we enough tough. You pay too much, we too much tough." " I pay plenty!" "Then we a-plenty tough!"
Lucille Ball, who starred in Room Service, said that if the Marx Brothers knew there was a priest, rabbi or nun in the crowd when they were filming, they would strip naked in front of them. The reason only Harpo was on I Love Lucy. Lucille Ball was terrified of Groucho and Chico. I love the Marx Brothers and the Three Stooges. My dad got me hooked on all these old comedy teams.
I love the historical pieces the brothers (writers) sometimes insert into their films! At 4:20 in the 1935 classic, "A Night at the Opera" with Groucho asking: "Don't you know what duplicates are?" Chico: "Yeah, there are 5 kids up in Canada!" Refers to the recently-born (1934) Dionne quintuplets, then a worldwide sensation, for it was the first time a woman gave birth to 5 babies who lived past infancy.
Chico could sure play a piano! When I was age 13 during 1974, I thought he was cute. I also thought those chocolate drops candy were shaped as his hat, without a brim. That candy is very sweet, with white stuff inside and chocolate on the outside. They are sold more often near Christmas. I watched all their movies in the 1970s, as a child and teen.
@@tompaulcampbell Does anyone else remember the variety shows, they were very popular in my memory recollections. Everything was included in the shows , and many went on to be star's
I thought that I read the family could only afford to pay for one of them to have piano lessons, so Chico went then, when he came home, he taught Harpo what he had learned that day. Thus, both learned the piano.
@Ol Yeller The only problem was, Harpo wasn’t as good a piano player as Chico - I believe he only knew two songs, and his claim to piano fame was being able to play “ Waltz Me Around Again, Willie” with one finger.
Kim Gyorkos : well piano was not Harpo‘s mean instrument it was the Harp! and he played that incredibly well! He could’ve had a second career as an internationally renowned concert harvest if you wanted to I believe he had that ability he might’ve had to study a little more classical music and develop a repertoire but he could’ve done it I’ve no doubt! Very talented guy he is missed there was no want to compare to him not now not ever! That was a very magical a very special Period in timeWhich will never be repeated or equaled again! That America no longer exists and it ain’t ever coming back! Thank God for the films that have survived!
"There ain't no Sanity Clause!" - still one of my favorites. There's more to that scene about the viaduct. Groucho: "You know what a blueprint is, don't you?" Chico: "Sure, it's an oyster." Groucho: "How is it you never got double pneumonia?" Chico: "I go round by myself."
"Don't you know what duplicates are?" "Sure! Those 5 kids up in Canada." The Dionne quintuplets: first quintuplets to make past infancy and into adulthood. Taken from their family, they were exploited by the Canadian government for profit. Born in 1934, the first one passed at age 20: she suffered from seizures and lived in a convent. She was not to be left alone but a nun that was supposed to be watching her left when she was asleep. She had a seizure, rolled into her stomach and unable to life her face from the pillow, she suffocated. As of January 2019, there are two surviving sisters.
As gifted as he was,he never really liked playing like Harpo did. And it is true that the family could only afford lessons for Chico, who would then teach Harpo what he had learned.
Left out one of my favorite parts of Conract scene..Groucho: " The party of the first party will hereby be known as the party of the first part." Chico: " I no lika that Party. Groucho: " Well you should have been to the first party! I didnt get home until 4 in morning! I was blind for 3 days!"
Love Chico (Chick-o).He was a fantastic "middle man",meaning he worked great with Groucho, worked great with Harpo, stood on his own with everybody else, and murdered the English language.Plus,he could really tickle those ivorys!
What a fantastic family everyone of them were unbelievable in their own field so talented is incredible, compared to nowadays, one thing is for sure you'll never have the likes of them again. Not only that each one of them had an incredible personal life you must Google each of them to learn about their lives from childhood through their career an death. As I say the word has never seen the likes before and never will again, God bless them all
The old time comedy teams were the best & they made you laugh without vulgarity or nasty political innuendos. I'll take the Marx's Bros, Abbott & Costello, Martin & Lewis, Hope & Crosby, and Laurel & Hardy anytime over the crap that passes off for comedy today
Sanity clause is a classic ! My personal favorite is the "Tootsie Fruitsie Ice Cream" bit that was part of A Day at the Races or the "Stateroom scene" from A Night at the Opera.
Their act was honed by years toughing it out on the vaudeville circuit. Every movie of theirs had a two-scene between Groucho and Chico, and some kind of friendship between Chico and Harpo. When you look at it that way, Chico was the glue holding the act together. They were all brilliant at what they did, though. There's never been a better trio in show business.
@@davidcarrington9259 I had been familiar with Groucho and of course Harpo (from I Love Lucy) but not Chico. Another fan posted (and can be seen here in the list) Chico playing piano in clips of 10 movies. That's all it took, I am a Chico Marx fan for life! His piano playing is out of this world.
