About Episode # 247:
June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada and on June 21st Canada celebrates and honours National Indigenous Peoples Day.
And while kidney disease affects 1 in 10 Canadians, Indigenous Peoples are at 3 X greater risk of kidney disease.
On the show today we share some important information about these risk factors and we share with you some inspirational stories from members of Indigenous Nations, who have travelled their personal journey with kidney disease.
Monica Goulet, from the Cree Nation in Saskatchewan shares the story of her journey from CKD diagnosis through to receiving a kidney transplant from her nephew Jim, her living donor match.
And Marissa Nahanee from Squamish Nation, not only shares the story of her journey with kidney disease but Marissa joins the Kidney Wellness Hub, Come Cook With Us chef’s to cook up one of her favourite easy-to-make Salmon recipes, sumptuous airfryer salmon with vegetable rice!
And PLUGGED IN joined, Elected Chief of Qualicum First Nations, Michael Recalma for fireside chats in which he shared some Indigenous traditions and personal ceremonies he experienced as part of his journey while on dialysis, prior to his kidney transplant.
