I respect that, I just meant all of us who are collectively governed by the Indian Act. I didn't ask to be governed by it, my parents made that choice for me and I can never deregister. I have very conflicting feelings about this issue, but I do know the Indian Act is inherently oppressive due to its parental nature, until it is changed to address this issue and treat Indians as self-determining individuals, WE are stuck in limbo b/c the Indian Act was a temporary solution.

It's not a misunderstanding though, the term is clearly defined in law, defined by the government. I don't go around calling myself that...I am many things, all humans are complex individuals. But, what I am saying is that that label is placed upon you from birth, sure you can ignore it and call yourself whatever you want, but the label is still there and legally binding. I know I have a lot to learn, and so do you. Learning should be continuous.
I don't know about the U.S., but in Canada, you ARE an Indian in the eyes of the law. I agree with you that we need to stop allowing governments to define us, but the fact of the matter stands that the Indian Act is called that, and as such legally we are defined as Indians and have a right to have input as to how the Act and other bills impact us. I feel like you should familiarize yourself with the Indian Act and its history, before you criticize those trying to make changes to it.

Also, I think majority of people need to focus on what the Govt truly is, Canada being a Corporation and its in plain sight on many Govt website. Acts, Bills, statues are nothing more than private copy written unilateral contracts that can be agreed by the conduct of the party agreeing. Its their corporate business and i say they can do what they will with their own laws as they see it and only YOU can be the one to agree to it by how you conduct yourself in their system.
the name on the b/c is legally public property and that is called INDIAN ..u are not an indian...the word is a persian word that means black slave , dog , theif.. the parthian persian rulers have created a credit system ..white , black , indian ..and the word denotes the credit rating of the name (public property)
Thanks alot for your reply. So, i may think you may have missed the message i was trying to give. You say, "WE" are defined as Indians? Who is we and when did i or anyone else agree to be in the group of WE ? nothing against you, but people need to stop grouping each other and focus on yourself as a whole and let others define themselves as they see it. Now, i am not saying you or anyone have to stop being Indian, just when you make that choice leave me out of the referred claim of WE.
I think the idea of being an Indian is your misunderstanding, Indian is nothing more than an offer, its up to you to agree to be labelled this name. You are an original, but you do have a person you handle in Canada but you cannot be a person. I may be hard to separate this teaching as the schools and society make it a challenge to separate because society themselves are unable to do the separation. Just know what words mean and how they affect you and what contracts are. Much to learn
