Chiki Chiki Boys for Sega Genesis - A Review | hungrygoriya

After falling for Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap, I discovered Chiki Chiki Boys for the Sega Genesis. Despite some visual similarities, it wasn't quite as close to Dragon's Trap as I'd hoped. Nonetheless, it was a wonderful and challenging experience. It's a console port of an arcade game called Mega Twins, combining action and some light RPG elements to create a very difficult but fun adventure. 🍖
The introductory animation and outro text were created and designed by Saad Azim.

Got to say, if you like Genesis games in this style, you might want to take a look at Wardner and Talmit's Adventure. But always wondered if the removal of coop in this port was the reason it didn't go by it's western name, Mega Twins. :S

As a kid, I got this game in a trade from a friend (for Quack Shot which I later repurchased anyway). I had never played anything like it before and I devoted myself to getting better at it. I’ve played it so many times since then that I find it very relaxing and I just soak in every detail. It isn’t talked about much in the retro gaming community but I am happy you made a video on it. The arcade version is also available on the PSP Capcom Classics Collection Reloaded as well as the latest Capcom Arcade Stadium on all modern platforms. There’s also a PC-Engine CD version of it that allows for simultaneous two player (which is like the arcade).

This was a game I wasn't aware of growing up, a little odd since beyond console gaming did usually go to various arcades, but when I tried it on the Capcom Arcade Stadium I had a great time. I'm really happy forgotten titles like this are being rereleased not only for the younger generation but also those of us like me who missed it back during it's heyday. Really love the in depth look, usually something like this is simply a small segment during a bigger look at Genesis games as a whole.

I try to shine a light on things that I enjoyed, but haven't necessarily gotten a lot of mileage online. I think folks would really enjoy this if they give it a chance! I only had around 10 games for the Genesis my entire childhood and rented the same stuff all the time, so it's nice to be able to expand outward now too.
@MissColleenJay

I grew up with this one and if it's not my favorite Sega Game, then it's at least in my top 5 lol. It was IMPOSSIBLE to get through those first three levels when I was really young, but there was always so much charm that it fascinated me and I kept trying. As a younger teen I learned the game well enough to actually beat it, but with the "Normal/Bad" ending. Turns out there's a "Good Ending" and I had no idea how to achieve it, to where I thought maybe it was only available in the arcade version or something, but when I finally figured it out during my college years it was extremely gratifying haha. This is such a good one, I've played it over and over throughout the years. (And actually I usually played with the Red Twin! I found the extra magic to be really helpful and I could always upgrade my sword and get more hit strength if I was careful and saved up money for gear. Unfortunately the Blue Twin never has access to an upgrade that gives him more magic, so Red was harder to START with, but would eventually have more combat variety later in the game) Thank you for the review! I never really saw another game like this so I might wanna go the reverse direction and see if I can find Wonderboy 3 lol
@hungrygoriya
@hungrygoriya Год назад
Oh right on! It's so awesome to hear of your experiences with this one growing up. I think I would've really enjoyed it if I'd had it when I was little too, just for the replay value and the beautiful music and graphics. I love that you played with the red twin, haha... I am a perpetual saver of all things consumable so I stayed in my comfort zone. I suppose you must've been good enough with the magic to be able to save up for those sword upgrades. It's a very clever approach! If you do end up trying out some Wonder Boy, I hope you have fun. It's definitely not the same style of gameplay but I love Dragon's Trap very much. Thanks for sharing!

This version of the game was developed by Visco. The English arcade version of the game is called Mega Twins (with the Japanese game being originally named Chiki Chiki Boys). If I had to guess why all regions of the Genesis version are just called Chiki Chiki Boys, it was probably because the developers of that port didn't know that the name of the arcade version in Western regions was different. Or maybe they knew and just kept the original name to keep parity between all versions. But the arcade game was put into the Capcom Arcade Stadium collection last year. All in all imo this is a good conversion of a cute little game

That polite gratitude at game over! So nice! Your description of the gluey wall jump reminds me of a much more recent game called The Swindle, wherein I've suffered countless lost lives from trying to jump through a gap but instead Spiderman-clinging onto a bit of wall that I was passing by in mid-jump. I remember this was a random purchase by my (paternal) grandfather. I had to maintain Honor Roll status in order to get a new game every Friday (my grandparents weren't super-rich, but were both shrewd at business and had plenty of savings), but my grandfather would spoil me once in a blue with a surprise (and seemingly random) purchase, and this was one of them. Pretty sure he didn't tell my grandmother about them... I might still have that copy in storage. I'd have to look eventually. Never did complete it, but I did get far (with the blue twin, of course). Other "surprise" games I can remember: Pesterminator on NES and Phalanx on SNES.

What an amazing gesture from your grandfather! I'm glad you might still have that copy of Chiki Chiki Boys hanging around. I have all of my childhood games, and it seems like your relatives had better taste in games than mine did... Pesterminator is something I'm not familiar with, but I can see the box art for Phalanx in my mind.
@LordSephleon
@LordSephleon 2 года назад
@@hungrygoriya Pretty sure Pesterminator was more of an impulse buy on his part; he would occasionally have people come to his auto parts shop trying to sell him stuff, so that was probably that. It's shovelware of a sort. I don't even remember the developers. I can still see the box art in my mind though. I might still have that around too. My grandparents (most of my family, really) weren't really all that knowledgeable of what games I played, but knew that I'd play anything new at least for a little while. 99% of the time, they deferred to me to choose what I wanted, either by taking me to the game shop/flea market and letting me pick, or by asking for a small list of games I'd like and then ticking them off between birthday and Christmas gifts. Only my mother really knew what I liked, because she was there to watch me play the original Legend of Zelda and see how much more I loved that over, say, Super Mario Bros. She was the one to get me Final Fantasy 1 as a birthday gift (and probably Ultima: Exodus and/or Dragon Warrior, but I have no recollection of how I got those). My father got me Final Fantasy 2 (4) on SNES, but I'm pretty sure I asked for it. :) Unfortunately, the majority of my old collections have gone missing (especially my NES games) as during my childhood and teen years, there was a lot of lending/borrowing/trading that went on between myself and school friends/acquaintances. And even with my grandmother's attempt to categorize all my games (little sticky labels to "number" each game, then I made a written catalog of games based on number), a lot of it vanished. Hell, I only have a handful of games with those labels still on them (I think I had over 100 NES games at the time that she labeled them, and more got added later even as others disappeared, so.... yeah).

Ah sweet; Mega Twins! That's what I played it as back in the day, though I do prefer the original name; it really is far more fun to say "Chiki Chiki Boys," lol. If you're looking for more Wonder Boy-likes, have you played the Shantae games? Sometimes they're mis-identified as Metroidvanias (because hey, that's _all any modern gamers seem to know._ Everything's a Soulslike or a Metroidvania to people nowadays), but yeah, they're Wonder Boy-likes. Or RPG-Platformers if you like, because they also share quite a bit in common with titles such as Gargoyle's Quest 2, Demon's Crest, the Goemon sidescrollers, Quackshot, etc. depending on the entry. Not all of them have World Maps like those games, for example. I'm playing Shantae and the 7 Sirens right now on my Xbox while watching this, and it just hit me so I figured I should mention the series before I forget. If you're looking for more Wonder Boy-esque titles, and you've never given the series a chance before, the Shantae games (particularly the latter ones; Pirate Curse, 1/2 Genie Hero, Seven Sirens) are great choices!

So many people love the title of this game. Me too, actually! I'd love to see what differences there are in Mega Twins (the arcade version) sometime. I haven't played any of the Shantae games yet, but I did recently order the GBC one from Limited Run so I could finally start the series. I have a few of them but haven't gotten around to them yet. Good to know they'll be up my alley! And thanks for the other titles too. I hope to get around to some of them sooner than later, though I have tried Demon's Crest before. I loved it!

I loved this game when I first got it in Summer 1993! I played it everyday until I could beat it with my eyes closed (not literally, but almost!). You're right, non-stop attacking is the key here, due to the constant enemies on screen and the countless secrets hidden everywhere. Now that I'm older and lazier I tend to use the turbo option on my controller. Sadly, my original copy got lost somewhere along the way (can't remember if I lost it, sold it or lent it), but a few years back I got a Japanese version in perfect condition, which is way more gorgeous ;)
@hungrygoriya

I bet after a while, a game like this is totally second nature. I feel like that with certain games I played when I was a kid as well. I would love to try this game with turbo to see how much easier it would be on the hands. I bet it'd increase the fun factor to be able to focus on other things other than how fast I'm mashing! I'm curious to see what's different in the Japanese version, but I can almost fathom a guess by the wink, haha
@thoja

@@hungrygoriya I'm not as good at this game as I used to be back then, but yeah, there are certain games that we've played so much that are like "comfort food" to us. Games that we know so well, we can't play all the way through them, but are still really fun. The turbo option is a big plus yes, you can't ever stop firing in this game! :D And the Japanese version is exactly the same as far as I know (besides the texts being in Japanese). What I meant is the presentation is so beautiful: the cover, full-colour manual, etc.

Excellent review! I'm wondering if the wall jump issue you pointed out can be narrowed down to controls vs. level design: if it's too "sticky" or if the level designs are too tight given that "stickiness". I always wanted to shift the blame to level design once the mechanics are sorted out and programmed, but that's my bias there as a gamedev, and maybe the real faults lay more in the fundamental controls. There's always so much finessing in my past experience with respect to how loose or tight collision detection should be.
@hungrygoriya
@hungrygoriya 2 года назад
That level I showed the clip from with the sticking was definitely a case of both I think. Not being able to disengage and very tight paths to take that made it really tough to have somewhere to go even if I'd manage to let go. It's interesting to think about for sure, as someone who is not in tune with the fine details of game development!
@darkengine5931
@darkengine5931 2 года назад
@@hungrygoriya There's a tight relationship in platformers between the controls and level design. For example, it would hardly make sense to use the level designs of Super Mario, so fluid and capable of accelerating and jumping low or high depending on how long we hold the jump button (I often want to conflate controlling Mario to a vehicle), to Simon in Simon's Quest (or the main character/wanderer in Faxanadu) which is deliberately stiff or vice versa. From the admittedly narrow view of my own field, I'm interested in what seems to feel good despite any possible level design. But should I accomplish it, the level design must necessarily work with that design. The ideal level design is dependent on the nature of the controls. If we change the controls, then we might as well toss out all the level design and start over again.

cool video, quite a hidden gem. as a kid one of the rental stores i went to had this, and i would get it often. still run through it every now and then, it's great. the arcade version has some extra content, even more if you play the japanese version (mostly an odd mission to rescue bikini ladies). if you enjoyed the genesis version, i'd suggest giving it a try. I know I played this at some point in my life, though maybe the arcade version rather than the Genesis. I don't think I gave it much of a chance. I never realized it had shops and dialog scenes. It actually reminds me a bit of Forgotten Worlds with those design elements, but with a very different art style. If you want a turbo fire controller, Sega actually made an official one as a six button arcade stick. Best Genesis controller I've ever used. I think they're pretty pricey these days, though. I know there was a three button version that is a lot cheaper, but I'm not sure if that one had the turbo fire switches. I've tried to get my old childhood ones working again, but they saw a lot of heavy usage over the years and don't respond well any more. Some day I'll get at least one of them back in action.

I recently bought the two Capcom Classics Collection disks for fairly cheap and Chiki Chiki Boys was one of the first games I tried. It's cute enough but I don't think it has the depth of the Wonder Boy in Monster World series. I'm definitely glad that it's one of those games that lets you continue exactly where you died instead of making you go back to the last checkpoint like Ghouls N' Ghosts and I made gratuitous use of the unlimited continues available in the Capcom Classics Collection because I don't think it's a game I'm likely ever to put in enough time to "git gud" in. The sound chip or whatever just makes such weird, artificial noises sometimes that take me out of it, especially with lower/mid tones. Most games sounded amateur and just... off. I wonder if the songs are usually composed on another platform and then added to the Genesis without much testing. The best example of audio turnoff for me is Sonic 2 - Wing Fortress Zone. The upper register sounds fine, but all the lower tones sound so awful to me. I love most of the tracks in classic Sonic games, but those Genesis sounds really drive me crazy on that one Zone in particular.

I feel the same way about the snes. The Genesis sounds amazing when its fm chip is used properly. Listen to the soundtrack of any Technosoft game. The snes however just sounds like tons of low quality samples draped in reverb. Even the Final Fantasy games sound so low quality. The composition is amazing but it just sounds so low quality. The Genesis fm chip fidelity is so much higher because it's producing the original sound itself. No low bitrate samples and obnoxious reverb.
