I'm a kiwi but working here since 17 I can tell yah there's nothing more aussie than a greasy ass springroll on lunch break possibly with some chips n gravy omg love it, though I have to put space in between my indulgences waistline problem
When I was a lad, in Reservoir, Melbourne, we always called them, "Potato Cakes." As for the rolls? Chicko Roll hands down! The "big" spring roll always seemed to be greasy, and more flimsy, tending to fall apart. Yet when cooked well, they weren't bad either. Glad you didn't put a battered saveloy into the mix. 😝
Lived in nsw most of my life and always known them as scallops. Lived in tasmania for 10 years and they are potato cakes. They scratch their heads down there if you ask for a potato scallop and try and sell you a real scallop.
@@charlesparker924, same here mate. Don't mind the odd Tassie scallop. The pub on the main road in Moonah used to do a great scallop and chips for lunch and dinner. Been a while since I was there though. Think it's changed hands a few times since then.
In Indonesia we have a crepe crumbed snack with cottage pie inside called rogut risoles. When I move here to Melb and try chicko rolls exactly like that haha
I love a good old Spring Roll, they taste even better home made!, where I live in the south east of SA, we call Potato Scallops Potato Cakes, I think it’s due to the fact we are close to the Victorian border, however the rest of SA call them Potato Fritters, it just depends on where you live.
Chicko rolls i love the crunchy crumb and call then scallops because they are scalloped potato's it makes sense. Chicko and spring rolls are $2.50 and scallops are 60c a pop hand made at my chip shop in Penrith
Spring roll for me too. The Chiko roll has a sort of slimey oily filling that has some vegies and a lot of salt. They always salt everything, you have to say “No salt” when you order it and remind them again when it comes out of the fryer, remember, no salt!
spring rolls over chicko rolls generally, but i like corn jacks as well, i call them potato scallops because if you cut a scallop in half it looks about the same thickness, where as a cake isnt if you cut it in half through the middle
Left Australia in 1991, Haven't had a Chico Roll since then but the distinctive taste of a Chico Roll skin will follow me to the grave. I wish I could get them inThe Philippines.
Yes that’s correct in Melbourne we call them potato cakes and yes I’ve heard them being called potato scallops but I call potato cakes each to there own
Potatoe cakes down here in Vic 2Aus for me. Great video as always mate mixing it up! Don’t think there is any Maccas deal tomorrow pretty disappointed I might be wrong though. Cheers mate 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
Not sure what it's like in Lithgow but I wasn't surprised that the first store didn't have them. They're not on the menu boards of any of the takeaways here in the Sutherland shire. Tbh I can't believe I'm saying this but I've never actually had a good Aussie chiko roll lol. My dad never really liked them when I was growing up so I guess he never bought them when we got fish and chips. I have seen the frozen ones for sale in Coles. I will have to buy some and try them.
From what I've been raised up around, my grandad use to make potato cakes out of onion carrot and potato grated and lightly battered then he cooked them either in thr pan or on thr BBQ
My wife is Thai So I get spring rolls regularity, I haven't had a Chicko roll for years, Thanks for uploading this one, I had forgotten how good Chicko rolls were. That being said I really don't miss either of them. Aussie have some unusual names for fried food, I can't help but think that maybe it has something to do with the Multiculturalism in its major cities A scallop is a type of mollusk that you had in the bag was a potato fritter but for some weird reason they call them Scollaps in NSW, Maybe because they cut them and batter them in a way to resemble a scalloped potato?
Spring rolls have a great texture and flavour , you get that crunch . Chickos can get quite chewy if not cooked properly, even though I enjoy a good chicko.
I come from Batemans Bay and as a kid I loved potato scallops. One time (years ago, when I was a teen) I went to the fish shop and asked for scallops and what I got was not what I wanted at all. They gave me actual scallops, which I didn't even know what they were at the time. I knew by looking at it, it wasn't potato scallops but I definitely knew as soon as I tasted it . From then on I made sure to ask for potato scallops not just scallops lol.
I ❤️ spring rolls the best but not with salt. Chicko rolls need heaps of salt. I’d prefer a Kabana. Love potato scallops! I went to Melbourne with my mum when I was little and she put me in kindy there. They were all sitting down cuddling teddy bears 🧸 It freaked me out man . I told her I’m not going back there lol 😝 We’re all so different. Tis funny Love to catch up on ya old vids 2 Aussie! You’re a legend 🍻
I love spring rolls and patato scollops. That spring roll and chiko roll you had are massive. And yes like most people have said every takeaway in Melbourne call them patato cakes. When I was young my parents use to call patato scollops 'Tatty Cakes'
The big controversy is tqke aways selling frozen factory made scallops instead of fresh hand sliced potato scallops but these days it's all machine made....
The bottom of the Chiko roll, I have always believed, is where the filling was oozing out and they just battered over it. The spring rolls are hand wrapped.
in vic we call them potato cakes and i would take 6 mini pork spring rolls with that yummy tangy dipping sauce from a good chinese takeaway for $3.50 over those 1970s antiques. like the show keep it up.
I’m in SA, we call them potato frittas. A scallop is a sea creature I believe! 🤔. I used to like chiko rolls but like most things they’re just not the same anymore so I’d have to go with a spring roll with sweet chilli sauce.
I’m from South Australia (SA) too and Chiko Rolls and potato fritters are not the same thing. Chiko Roll is the brand name of a commercially produced item consisting of mince, cabbage, carrot and onion wrapped in thick pastry and deep fried. They’re also available frozen in supermarkets in packets of four. . A potato fritter is a thick slice of potato, par-boiled, dipped in batter, deep fried and available in all good fish and chip shops.
If you don't like a Chiko Roll then you don't like them. That doesn't make them terrible, I prefer the Chiko Roll to Spring Roll, which is best is up to personal taste.
>what take-away shop doesn't sell them? The sort that advertises itself as selling coffee, I suppose. I'd view that as a warning to steer clear! >potato 'scallops' In Adelaide (and probably SA in general) they are called 'potato fritters'. Potato scallop sounds reminiscent of scalloped potatoes (with cheese, cream, etc.). I sometimes hear young people mispronounce 'scallop' with the 'a' as in 'trap'. >Chiko vs Spring Roll I seem to be in the minority in preferring Chiko Rolls. Corn Jacks are in the running, too. And fish shop dim sims, which I think are the real winners.
They are two things I've always avoided since I generally don't eat vegetable matter. I bought both about a week ago from a servo to compare and the chiko was significantly better. Take that from someone who doesn't eat vegetables and has bought more chiko rolls since to enjoy, the filling is ground so fine together you don't get the vege tast at all. They are scallops, if someone says cake's I genuinely consider less of them.
Potato cakes, Victoria. I hate that alot of potato cakes/scallops/fritters nowdays are factory made, you know what I mean, perfectly circular with a weird coating. Those ones look legit though.
