During ROADSHOW’s 2006 Milwaukee show, Folk Art expert Allan Katz appraised a charming swan-shaped sleigh. Katz told Jackie, the sleigh’s owner, that her sleigh had a retail value of between $20,000 and $30,000, and that it was the smaller of a pair, most likely made for siblings. It’s what he didn’t tell Jackie that day in Milwaukee that’s at the heart of this surprising story.

I really love that Antiques Roadshow is putting out these "later in the larger story" pieces. I have watched a number of them. "Extraordinary Finds" and so on. It really adds a lot of heart to the matter and the context of our lives. Even though much is private in the stories, being able to capture the heart essence is a privilege to see.

you really don't get enough from the original shows. You're left wondering more about what could happen or what happened after things were appraised. I really like hearing the stories from both sides long after the fact too.

A couple I remember well enough to paraphrase: "Apple is really a software company. They should get rid of their hardware operation." and "Apple should merge with AT&T." That type of thing. I've watched AR forever and I have to agree with you on this one. I feel like it's generally unacceptable for someone to appraise an object knowing they own one as well, which can only help the value of their version. While someone may have been willing to pay that for it, I think the actual value in an auction would fall far, far short of his 100k estimate. Probably around 10% of what he appraised it for. He used the second example from the show as a way to reinforce what he paid, which was a pretty crazy price.

I thought the same initially, but as he mentioned it was around half the size of his own (not to mention he implied he paid over the 'actual value'). That said I agree with you that his valuations are inherently screwy/suspect (when you personally own half the market of a commodity you shouldnt be involved in "impartially" evaluating the value of that market).
@faithlesshound5621
@faithlesshound5621 Год назад
@@cameronjames3499 He told us he discovered the dealer he bought his sledge from had paid only a fraction for it before he brought it across the country specifically to offer it to him: so the other guy clearly had his measure. What's it worth? As much as ONE person is willing to pay for it. If the "mark" is a wealthy aesthete, that value must depend on the quality of the lunch he just had. With a supply of one, and a demand of one, there's not much of a "commodity market."

@@drinny26 Something is worth as much as someone will pay for it. There are some very wealthy folk art collectors/collections out there. It's important to keep that in mind. Appraising something at 40k doesn't mean there are thousands of people out there who would pay 40k. It just means that there's enough demand to get that price, even if that demand is a relatively niche market.

Not really that great a deal. If he paid $40,000 in 1980, it would need to sell at $140,000 or better in 2022 just to keep up with inflation. It's a loser piece because he paid too much. The winner is the dealer who flipped it and made $35,000 back in 1980.
