My top reason for not wanting kids is the divorce rate. With the divorce rate being 50%+ those are terrible odds. I have no desire to be a weekend dad. Plus women initiate 80% of all divorces. A man would have to be a complete moron to get married and have kids today.
@butterscotchwm

One of my biggest reasons for not wanting kids is just the pain and physical trauma of pregnancy/childbirth. Every woman Ive seen talking about childbirth talks about it like they went through war. I imagine you’d want to have kids pretty badly if you’re willing to go through all that.

Been married 50 years in a month's time. Still in the honeymoon phase, we spend every waking moment together. Never had kids, never wanted to, never regretted it. I just think of all the things we were able to do that wouldn't have been possible if we had. People literally sacrifice their own lives for the sake of a vicarious immortality. It never looked like a reasonable exchange to us.

My fianceés' reasons: 1. Chronic back problems and prolly getting wrecked if giving birth 2. Endometriosis 3. Not liking kids in general. They're loud, annoying, messy and are a big responsibility. 4. Not wanting to put her body through birth and breastfeeding. 5. More free time without children. 6. We can do whatever we want to whenever we want to. 7. Not wanting to drift away from each other as partners because we're also going to be "parents". 8. Money. 9. Spending money on us and our loved ones. 10. Sleep. Naps. 11. Hobbies. 12. Not having to plan vacations around kids and making them kid-friendly. 13. Peaceful life. 14. She doesn't feel like she would have motherly instincts. Did I mention she doesn't like kids? 15. Because we want to spend all of the time we have together and we're still madly in love with each other. My reasons are the same (ofc not the ones I physically can't feel like birth and endometriosis) 🤗

I agree with all that. I think my biggest reason some is that life is full of suffering and hellish stuff and I wouldn't want to bring children into the world to endure all that like myself and others. Kids don't ask to be born. A lot of us are the results of parents who wanted a sense of purpose or fulfillment or some form of immortality. Think about it. A child is a human being with thoughts, and feeling like you and me and their gonna grow up, go to school and be essentially enslaved by the world until and pay taxes, and face all sorts of hardships and high expectations until they die. And thats all because the parents desires for personal purpose and fulfillment. But thats just me and my deeper interpretation of parenthood. They're are others who think the same way. I read a meme that goes like this. Baby: "Y-your.." 😐 Mom: "He's about to say his first words!" 😍 Baby: "Your selfish desire for symbolic immortality brought me here to suffer as an ornament to owned and displayed." 😐 Mom: 😟

If you had children they would probably put you in a nursing home anyway. They would more than likely be working in another part of the country and living there own lives and trying to survive in this modern day Rat Race. Get long term care insurance and dont worry about old age. The way it looks we might wind up in a nuclear war with one of these crazy super powers. Why would anyone want a child these days. 1.I know having kids that I dont want will eventually lead to me lashing out at them at some point. There is no excuse to abuse a child. 2.I know what it's like to be an 'unwanted' child. My mom tried her best and made sure I never went without, but kids can still feel when they're not wanted, no matter how hard a parent might try 3. Role-reversal Parentification. I already raised my mom and dad. I dont need to spend the rest of my life raising someone else. Not to mention I still need to develop into a stable person in general in order to be a stable parent

My number 1 reason for not having a child is my own experience with depression as a teenager. I was depressed to the point of suicide. I would not want my future children to experience that. My other reasons are: 2. Cost. I can barely pay for my own needs/desires. 3. I used to babysit my nieces and nephews, and I hated the experience! 4. I don't like touching dirty diapers. 5. I don't like the sound of babies crying. 6. I don't like the chaos that children create: yelling, breaking stuff, making a mess. I want to live in a house that is clean and organized. 7. How am I supposed to teach a child to make a living in this expensive environment (USA)? I spent most of my life working for low wages, and I cannot afford to go to college or a trade school. I have no valuable job skills or talents. I cannot, in good faith, tell my child to go out into the world, work hard, do his/her best, and, hopefully, they'll make enough money to pay all their bills and get their slice of the American Pie. My bills are $1500 a month, and I make about $30,000 a year. That's not a legacy I would want for my kids if I had kids. I'd want them to figure out a way to be financially independent, so they won't have to worry about being fired/laid off from their jobs or worry about some crappy politicians & their self-righteous constituents threatening to take away their jobs if they don't get vaccinated. I really hate this world, and my moments of success have been few. I would want my kids to have a better life with more resources, more opportunities to get ahead socially/financially, and more opportunities to do fun things and explore interests/hobbies. And I want them to grow up in a safe neighborhood (and most of the horrible crimes occur in low-income neighborhoods---the kind of neighborhoods I can afford to live in). This world is designed to accommodate high income earners while the rest of us suffer, and the kind of daily frustration I feel because of this reality is something that I wouldn't want my future kids to experience.
@TheChildfreeConnection
@TheChildfreeConnection 2 года назад
I'm so sorry that you have experienced all that and I can certainly understand how you have arrived at your conclusion. We each need to decide what's best for us and go from there. In the end, the list of reasons doesn't even matter as long as we feel joy with our choices. 💛

Love this! Child-free by choice too and the most annoying judgment is when people say it’s “selfish” to choose not to have kids... when really if you think about it - wanting to have kids is equally selfish too. Childfree people are selfless, it's parents who are selfish. I've listened to parents say how they don't care about anyone other than their kids, but as soon as something happened to their kid...guess what? The parents want to interrogate every person in sight and ask why their kid was never helped lol but won't help other people's kids. It makes no sense to me, but it's so entertaining to hear how silly + contradictory they sound.
@sagatuppercut2960

A lot of children suffer emotional/physical abuse from selfish parents that decided to have a baby for whatever reason. And sometimes their kids end up being raised by someone else. That, to me, is VERY selfish because our society is burdened from their lack of adult responsiblity, whereas, those of us who are childless are usually taking care of ourselves.

Kids are not a "you reap, you sow" thing. They will grow up and have their own lives. I've heard so many stories, countless, of adult kids not being there for their parents when they are old. They have their own lives and even kids of their own. Life will probs become harder anyway.

Aren’t we so fortunate to live in a time where we have the CHOICE to be child free? In any other time of history, you wouldn’t have had that choice. I had 2 sons and now 3 grandkids and wouldn’t have had it any other way. They’re over 40 now and such very good friends. I love visiting with them and sharing in their lives. I know I’m very fortunate and I’m happy that women have choices today. If you don’t want kids, no one should pressure you into it.

We are but unfortunately society hasn't kept up with the choice. So many women in our community feel so shaky about this decision due to pressure, judgement and hurtful comments. I'm a 53 year old woman and childfree by choice. Never had the desire for kids. At a baby shower one time someone had the audacity to say birth control is for wimps and that being a mom is the courageous thing to do. How insulting to all of us who have chosen a childfree path. Infact our choice is far more courageous as it's not easy to go against the grain of what is expected of most people and live a life that for many may seem lacking. Having kids is the easier of the two choices to make. This isn't to say I dislike kids. They are great, as long as they are not mine. 😏

@@AnoddityI know this thread is a year old, but I just wanted to say THANK YOU for choosing yourself as a woman. It is easy for men to want kids because they don't have to carry pregnancies, they don't have to give birth, and most of the child rearing burden is placed on the mother. As a pediatric RN, I see so many married single mothers. They are working outside the home, but have little to no involvement from their husbands inside the home. I don't know what kind of man your ex partner was, but I am so happy you saved yourself from that possible fate. I pray🙏🏾 you have healed and are doing well.

I think reason no. 4 is my number 1.Once I rescued a sick pigeon and for that week it was staying with me I was a wreck. Every moment was about the pigeon, I couldn't think of anything else, couldn't function at all. I was worried all the time, but not that kind of regular worry but one that changes your entire personality. It was only one week (it died unfortunately, that also destroyed me), but it felt like ages. I could say that I did connect with a more caring, loving part of myself though this experience but there is no way I could live like this. Even if the bird was healthy, I would still feel like there is this constant heaviness in my chest all the time. I have had issues with anxiety and other mental health issues all through my life and I don't think I could stay sane or even healthy having a child. I still have huge feelings of guilt though around this topic and keep questioning myself.

People can call you selfish for not wanting to have kids...I think it is more selfish to bring a human being to the world just to please everyone around you when you didn't even truly wanted that that much. I think kids deserve honest love from parents who actually wanted them because they thought that would make their lives fuller and happier, not parents who have them just because that's the role they're supposed to play as a couple but then complain about how hard parenthood can actually be.

While most of my friends and family members couldn’t care less about my choice, I get A LOT of resentment and hostility from people, including some family members, who had kids, realized that motherhood and family life wasn’t the perfect fairytale they thought it would be, now hate their lives (even if they won’t admit it) and hate me for being happy, and having freedom. If people want to call me selfish for my choice, fine, but at least my every waking moment doesn’t consist of either working, cleaning, or changing diapers. I know lots of people who had kids and still remained great people, but I know a lot of others who turned into judgemental a**holes after they procreated.

I'm happy to have found this channel - I've been feeling a bit isolated recently in my decision to be childfree. My #1 reason is just that I've never been interested in being a parent. Just like I've never personally been interested in being a pilot, or a baseball player, etc... I do love kids and taught for many years. However even when I was studying childhood development and spending all days around children, I never imagined myself as a mom. I loved my students but was really happy that they were, in fact, just my students and not my kids! My second reason is that I have chronic health issues. I spend a lot of effort managing my health so that I can have success at work and balance a healthy amount of social activities. However, I really feel like I'm at my 'max'. There are already not infrequent periods in my life where I have to shelve some of my responsibilities to focus on staying well. I cannot imagine how I would manage with raising a child and also caring for myself. This is one reason it can feel really hurtful when people start pestering me about why I'm not having children. I don't feel obligated to share my personal medical problems with acquaintances but some people feel entitled to get a 'valid' answer out of you for deciding to be childfree.

For me, it is #3 all the way. I had a catalytic experience at 31 which sparked a journey of awakening which I have been on for several years. As you said, seeing just how deep some of my wounds are and how much work I have to do on myself to simply release fears to be able to live some semblance of a normal life, it is likely going to take me many, many more years. I have a very long way to go and I could never be responsible for another human being with the work I have left to do to make myself “okay.” This didn’t even start until 31. I shudder to think what would have happened to a poor kid if I became a mom in my 20’s and THEN had this awakening where I need to pretty much be in solitude most of the time. How would that have benefitted a kid? How would that have benefitted me? Things happened in my life as they were supposed to and it just reinforced for me what I knew since childhood: I am not meant to be a mom.

My wife and I don't want kids. Obviously we all know none of us need to give a reason to anyone if we don't want to (especially to people with children) but seeing as this is an awesome childfree community, I'll let you guys know my reasons on the off chance someone relates. One of my main reasons is that there is a huge age gap between one of my sisters and I. My mum was an alcoholic and had bipolar and post natal depression. I was a teenager when my sister was born so I did a lot of the care. While I love both my sisters, I think it helped me realise how hard it is to bring up children and showed me this is not want I want out of life at all. I already did all the nappy changing, bottle feeds, teaching her to crawl/walk by the time I was 15. I know it's different to having my own kids or adopting, but I felt I had a taster of parenting and it's not something I would go through again. That...and I just don't really enjoy spending long periods of time with kids. I'm going to sound awful here but I just find the whole concept of parenting incredibly dull and a waste of time/life (I hated typing that because it's not the kids' faults! But I'm hoping some of you will get what I mean and it's always nice to talk about things on our minds in a safe community!). Some of my friends have kids and, sure, my wife and I like to be fun aunties and play games with them and make sure we get the kids pressies for birthdays and xmas, but I find myself wanting to spend less and less time with my friends who have kids. I feel so awful about it as they're lovely people but they're so boring now and the friendships aren't fulfilling anymore. Met my wife at 25. Planned our marriage out. Got married at 32. We traveled and did everything a million times over. We had problems having kids. We had kids by 37. Life was pretty boring. You can only wine taste so many times as a married couple. I respect anyone who does not want kids. The first 3 years is rough. After that. It’s amazing. I love coming home and my kids hug me. It’s so fun showing them new things. Going on vacations to Hawaii etc. My wife and I would never take a vacation without our kids. We had 10 years plus of no kids. My kids are 9. All of my planning before I had kids paid off. I don’t have to work hard and extra hours anymore. My house is paid off. We go on big vacations 2 times a year. We have lots of help from retired parents and aunts etc. I spend all of my time with my kids and wife. I meet a lot of people who don’t want to have kids. It will only work if you agree on it and talk long term plans. I have met a lot of men who had kids and don’t want anymore and changed their mind when their gf or new wife wanted kids. Seen others reach 40 and have a mid life crisis and then want kids.

Hi Mike- Thank you so much for sharing your journey! I'm so glad that having kids makes you happy and worked out so well for you. I have heard this many times. People tell me how they didn't want them and then had them and are loving the experience. I completely respect it but saying others reach 40 and then want kids is just another assumption. Can it happen? Yes. Anything can happen. People also regret having kids. Our assumptions stem from our personal experiences and social circle. I have been researching this topic for years and have personally spoken to many childfree people around the world. My experience is not the same as yours. I find so much evidence of true joy and happiness from the childfree choice well into people's elder years. I agree with you, it works when two people agree and have long term plans but I would hope that people who choose to be parents would do the same.

Yeah, that’s happens. However, I’ve had parents tell me in confidence if they could go back in time knowing what they know now about parenthood, they’d choose not to have children. People regret having kids too. Keep that in mind.

I’m an anxious mess to begin with, some health issues, the lack of desire is a big one. And my worst nightmare was getting pregnant (despite there being zero chance since I’m an asexual and single person.) and in college I was so massively offended when my friends says: “We all bet you’ll be the first one to have children of us all.” I prefer fur kids. If I want to nurture something? I have plants and animals around me to nurture. The list goes on. On the pro side? Empty.

All these reasons resonate with me! I am in my early twenties, and I have never had any desire to become a parent, beyond on some abstract, purely theoretical level. Simply not wanting kids is a 100% valid reason for not having them! I got out of a relationship where there was an age difference earlier this year. My (now ex) partner kept bringing up kids, asking me "when I'd feel comfortable having kids", etc. I felt nothing but dread at those prospects. So nope, parenting is not for me.
@TheChildfreeConnection

I can relate! In my 20s, I had to have the "I don't want to have kids" conversation with people I was dating and I would occasionally get the "you'll change your mind" response too. That's actually the topic of the video we are releasing this week, we are talking about "how to tell your partner that you don't have kids". SO many topics to discuss!! 😀

I am also a worrier which causes me so much anxiety and stress, I won’t be able to function properly. Just taking care of my dog is difficult at times, I don’t think I could handle a kid. I think one of my top reasons too is how much I hated school growing up. Bullying, terrible curriculum, bad influences. I like the idea of homeschooling vs public school, but I believe I need my work to feel content in life.

Hello, Thank you for this channel and video. I am 33 and have decided ever since I could remember mainly age 16; that I didn't want children. Of course that small percentage has been in back of my mind. However, the higher percentage of my decision overpowers that small %. As far as worrying like you mentioned, I worry like crazy it gives me a lot of anxiety and just the thought of having to raise a child and all that comes with it is something I do not desire. Apologies to anyone who gets offended, it is not my intention in any way, shape, or form. Sincerely, Cindy

This is so refreshing. I get negative reactions all the time when I say I’m married but don’t want kids. It’s almost like a conversation stopper lol. There was this great video I watched from TED Talks where the presenter made a point to stop saying childless. There is an implication to that that I’m missing something. It’s amazing how a change in language can make a huge difference in your mindset.

I (27, male, USA) can definitely relate to all the reasons you mentioned but another big one for me is the environment. The planet doesn’t have very good future prospects, and the world is already overpopulated. And having just one kid is exponentially worse for the environment than eating meat, flying, or anything else really. With that and everything else, bringing kids into this world doesn’t feel right.

I made a very conscious choice to not procreate for many reasons. I’m a worrier too! There’s that and a lack of desire to be responsible for other humans 24/7 for YEARS! I also had so much responsibility for others when I was younger. One of the biggest reason was mental health. With a family history of mental health issues, I did not want to pass on those genes and risk having a child with mental health issues akin to what I see in and have been subjected to from family members.

My childfree life was born in part by circumstances and in part by choice. I never had the strong desire the way some people do but at different phases of my life it was palpable. Me and my husband tried to conceive and it didn't work out. I had mounting health issues, he was switching careers and I couldn't get pregnant naturally. At some point, when we were in our early 40s we just decided that this wasn't in the cards for us. That despite having a desire there were other things that now felt more significant to focus on. I think predominantly what happened was that by the time we were in our 40s being confronted with a choice on how far to pursue having a child we realized how happy we had been without one. Prior to that there was still a thought that maybe people need that relationship. But at 40 something we realized our lives felt great and we loved where we were at. So I may not have fully chosen it but I've come to find a lot of celebration in where we are.

I have a similar situation. We've tried for a couple of years, and it didn't happen. And now I don't think I even want to try anymore. I started thinking about other plans. Travelling, learning a new job, having fun. So its not exactly my choice, but partly I think it is. I could try harder, could do ivf etc. But I just dont want it. Too much pressure and pain and the result is not guaranteed. So I just discovered a good side of the coin and relaxed. At the moment my new feeling is sinking in, so sometimes I still feel doubts, but most of the time I'm contented.

Just found your channel and subscribed! I'm on the fence, but heavily leaning childfree right now. If I do hop off the other side of the fence, I will do it alone with a donor and be one and done. I grew up wanting a handful of kids, but the older I get (I'm almost 25), the more I realize I don't think I want that life anymore. I want freedom to do what I want when I want, the lifelong responsibility of being a parent terrifies me (despite what people say, parental responsibilities and worries don't just suddenly disappear once the kid turns 18), and I'm also a worrier. Even if my child grows up perfectly healthy and well-behaved, they may develop a severe mental illness or addiction later in life. Or what if they get cancer? What if they start hanging out with the wrong crowd and get into trouble? What if they lose their job and have to be financially dependent on me as an adult? You just never know and I 100% think you need to be okay with any and every outcome if you want to have kids, or at least be willing to deal with it and I'm just not sure I am.

Jasmine, I can see that you care deeply about your future unborn child. Imagine when or if it were alive, the anxiety would be even worse. Whatever decision you make, you alone have to live with the consequences. At 42, I have pretty much made up my mind about staying childfree. I am the aunt with the disposable income that takes in all the nieces and nephew's every summer to give my siblings a break. It does 2 things for me, i get my baby fix and reaffirm my decision every time. For me, the environmental issues are the reason behind my decision. I live in a bubble in the U.S , life is great, but once you're outside that bubble, you realize how crazy the world has gotten.

Lack of desire is the #1 reason. The cost of kids, the shift in lifestyle, the anxiety (etc) are all great reasons that I could've overcome had I wanted kids enough. But I don't want them... like at all. The idea of pregnancy and childbirth is not beautiful to me in the slightest--I think it's scary, something you can't cleanly escape from. And motherhood sounds like a prison. My mom has clinical anxiety disorder and she constantly worries about my brother and I... and I have general anxiety also. Why in the world would I want to worry about more people than I already have to? My husband and I also love our freedom and flexibility AND our financial resiliency. Retiring early (or at least comfortably) is very big for us.
