I remembered two more games we played. Simon Says and Marbles.Yes, we played Jacks too. Our mom was a real champ at it. She taught us a bunch of ways to play, where you had to knock on the floor with your knuckles, before you grabbed the jacks, then catch the ball. You had to put 1 or 2 fingers up to signal you had to go potty. Hilarious! No, we didn't do that. Our little country school had a bathroom in each classroom up to 3rd grade. We just got up and went, without asking, but we had to go quietly. That was a given. After 3rd grade, we had to raise our hand and ask permission to go to the restroom. They never asked which we had to do. There was a girl's bathroom at one end of the hall, and a boy's bathroom at the other end of the hall. But manners were really instilled in us. Ask permission. Say please and thank you. And to cross the street, we had to "stop, look, and listen." Something people today don't do. They just walk out into the street to cross, while looking at their cell phones. Its crazy!
I also remember Simon Says. This series of Sandra’s is amazing. Too bad we all can’t have a reunion and play these games. I hope you have a fantastic summer.
We played hop scotch in our dirt yard; no sidewalks. About everything you mentioned was part of my childhood; some I don’t recognize. I remember the green stamps, glasses and other things in the detergent box, and we dressed up to go shopping. So many memories. ☺️👍
So fun Sandra. I grew up in the 60's but born in the mid 50's. We watched Ed Sullivan, loved the variety he provided for all of us. I also remember go-go boots. Do you remember those? I remember wanting some but money was tight .We didn't have a car as mom didn't drive and parents were divorced so the neighborhood kids were fun. Learned to ride a bike from Janey our neighbor girl, she let me borrow hers. We had a neighbor after that that owned a beautiful red collie dog. She would go to work in the morning and Cinnamon would come over and we would be together all day that summer. When his owner came home he would go home. We had to move and I sure missed dear Cinnamon. So many memories. Thank God most were good. Thank you. You are a comfort and a blessing to many of us. God continue to bless you and yours.
My aunt was in high school when I was in grade school. When my aunt was away at college my grandmother would let me borrow her ball gowns to play dress up. I can remember wearing white gloves to church on Sunday. Yes, I too played with fireflies.
Hi Sandra! I love these videos listening to your childhood memories. I can relate to some of them also. I’m 66. I always asked for a baby doll at Christmas and really enjoyed them as I always pretended I was a mom. I would change them and cut their hair so short they wouldn’t hardly have any hair left to style! Lol We always dressed up too mom always wore a dress, hat and gloves when we went downtown to a medical appointment. We took the bus for about 20 cents. Then she would take us kids to lunch, it was always so much fun… we would miss some school because of the appointments. We didn’t care of course. I had the same roller skates! I always enjoy your videos no matter what you talk about. Always wish they were longer. I can’t get over how young you look for your age and how sweet you are. And you always look so pretty! 🌷🌸💕 🇺🇸 Happy Memorial Day 🇺🇸 All my best to you and Mr Bill ..and sweet Millie. 💖🐾 Love you ~
That’s hysterical about digging up puppies. 😂 My mom told me the spaghetti we were eating were worms she dug up in the yard. I believed her and stopped eating spaghetti!😅
Oh, and let’s not forget the transitor radio! When I was in the fourth grade, I got a new bike for Christmas. It was the one I showed my dad in the Christmas catalog that had a tiny basket on the handle bars to hold a little transitor radio. I thought I was so cool! Remember the Christmas catalogs where you would look at toys for hours deciding what to ask Santa for? I miss them. I know we can get anything online but I miss the catalogs.
❤Keep it comin' Sandy love the stories...I went to school in the 60s...we just raised our hand for the bathroom...we would eat in the lunchroom and we waited til everyone sat at our table then we said "God is great, God is good, let us thank Him for our food amen" with our hands praying...then it ended in 1963 because the atheist Madilyn Murray O'Hare complained to the Supreme Court and out God went...she was murdered by a man that worked for her a few yrs later...I liked praying at school cause we didn't at home...we did get to go to Vacation Bible School for 2 weeks in the summer...kool-aid, coloring pics of Jesus, gluing macaroni all over a high heel or a plate and they spray painted it gold for us to take home to mom...I really loved going to it every summer from 9 to 3, a break for our mom cause we were 5 kids...keep your stories comin'❤praise the Lord Jesus ❤
Happy Memorial Day Weekend Sandra and Mr. Bill. Sandra please know your childhood memory videos make me smile. Did you also play the hand games? The one I remember is “Miss Mary Mack Mack Mack all dressed in black black black”. I don’t remember the rest 😂. ❤️🤗
@@Sandrabrownhappinesspast60 yes rock paper scissors was a favorite. Since you have posted these reminisce videos I always think how fun it would be to play some of these games ❤️
I’m 71, all the games we played are still good for us. I loved jump rope , hop scotch, and jacks. I still jump rope several times a week. I get on trampoline with my great granddaughter. I’m actually shopping for a rebounder. I have ball and jacks… it’s a great eye hand coordination game. Hop Scotch is still fun, also a good eye and coordination game. Thanks the memories ❤️
I recall the hula hoop in grade six at a Catholic school and the teacher, Sr. rose Carmel, watching me hula to the count of a hundred. I recall the big grin she had on her face in the schoolyard. 😊
I just had to stop back here and add to my previous comments. I was just chatting with my friend's dad who is a sharp 84 years young. We were just chatting about these types of things. Well, Sandra you might need episide 5. On my RU-vid feed popped up the original Captain Kangaroo Show episodes. I watched a few and boy oh boy. I saw myself in my well made flannel jammies. Pink print with a peter pan collar. My pink whip stiched slippers with pink faux fur around the top of the slipper where you put your feet in. Stickied fingers from maple syrup and a plate of pancakes my mama made me...I sat cross legged in front of our black and white tv. Paying close attention to " the captain" , Mr. Moose, Greenjeans, Grandfather clock and all the rest. Who didn't love Captain Kangaroo! Always at the end, he reminded us to say please and thank you and to be a good neighbor. He also reminded us to say our prayers. * sigh* if we could only turn back time. Magical days!
So many little children not raised in a Christian home, maybe a bad home life could really use Captain Kangaroo to tell them to pray. Oh, we need guidance for the children.💕
Sandra, you have just created a "50s Memories" series for your followers! Thank you! My first doll's name was Amy, it was a Christmas gift. My older sister copied me and named hers Amy too.
Oh Sandra!!! You are so cute and hilarious!!! I get the biggest kick out of your stories! I was born in 1952 so I can relate to many of them. This is such a delight to think back about things you just never think about anymore. I had the best childhood with wonderful Christian parents. I have a sister 22 months older and a brother six years younger. My sister and I absolutely loved the paper dolls. We could spend hours with them. We were very much raised in church, so instead of playing house, we played church. My sister always wanted to be the preacher’s wife and lo and behold, she married one 10 days before she turned 19!!!I laughed out loud when you mentioned the Toni perms! I didn’t know of any men getting them though. We played with dolls too but my sister and I really wanted a real monkey to dress. Do you remember the show called The Hathaways? We were so jealous! We wanted a little girl monkey to dress. I find myself wanting to go shop for a ball and jacks now! I loved it so much. I have so much more to say but this is getting long so maybe more later. Thanks so much for the fun. I just love you so much!❤️
Sandra, I want to thank you for doing this. You have got us all excited and we just want to have fun! I really think I am going to have to buy a ball and jacks. I hope I can still do it. Hope you, Mr. Bill and Millie have a great weekend! Love to you all
Sandra, I totally wish I could just spend some time with you. So much we could talk about. This life is getting very difficult but thinking back to the happy times of growing up is so very good for us. I hope you continue this. I love it! Great job my friend!
@@Sandrabrownhappinesspast60 haha i slept through two or three videos I had to go back and watch them a little bit it's so cute I've been wanting that for months and I was like I'm not on them
Hi Sandra, when I was a little girl. I always wanted a brother One christmas, my mom and dad bought me a Peter play pal doll. He was dressed in a suit and was about 3 or 4 feet high. He had a sister doll named Patty play pal. As far as baby dolls go, I remember Tumbelina. The game you were talking about with the squares and numbers in the boxes I think was called hop scotch. I used to do double dutch, alot of fun. Love to hear your stories. The one about where do puppies come from was hilarious!. God bless you and Mr. Bill.
My Mom wore high heel and put on red lipstick about 10 min before Dad came home from work!! She wanted to look nice for him. When he came in the house all 6 kids stood in a line to kiss him hello!!! Like the vontrap family i thought. Lol. It was expected of us
All the good memories! Riding a bike was a huge milestone and we rode far and wide. Do you remember those tubes of some kind of soft plastic to put on the end of a straw and blow up a big ball of air. We used to chew that stuff too. I think it is still available .You think of all the stuff we got into and we are lucky to be alive. Remember playing in dirt and water and making mud pies? I still have to find 1and 2 of your childhood memories of the 50s. Thanks Sandra, Liz
I was just about to mention Tiny Tears and playing baby dolls and you did! One day barbies, another baby dolls. Changing their clothes and diapers, feeding with toy bottles, bathing them and fixing their hair. Pushing our dolly in a play buggy that looked like real. The stores had shelves of beautiful baby dolls. Especially at Christmas time. Played for hours. You don't see that today. I am so glad to have lived these magical days gone by. Wouldn't trade it for the world. I visit them often. They play like a slide show across my mind. Many times I visit longer than I should. A beautiful time when less was more ~♡
Yes hopscotch and jump rope double Dutch! Roller skates with a skate key. Yes pickup sticks and paddle ball. Yes catching fireflies. Yes in the 50s the women wore dresses and the men sport coats or suits. When our family went to the Worlds Fair everyone there was dressed up, not like today with folks wearing shorts t-shirts and flip flops. I had a Betsy Wetsy doll and a Chatty Kathy doll
Was it the 1964 NY World's Fair in Flushing Meadow Park? I watched a show about it recently titled, 'Defunctland the History of NYs World Fair of 1964' People did dress with care back then. It is amazing to see!😮
I remember playing a game called Red Rover. Its when everybody holds hands and makes a circle and everyone would sing Red Rover Red Rover we dare Sandy over. And Sandy would get in the middle of the circle and start to run and try to break the hands apart of two of the kids. It was so much fun.
I definitely remember Toni Home Perms because my mother was forever giving me a perm 😊 Do you remember the Sparkle Plenty doll? I just loved it & took it everywhere. One day I thought I had a good idea when I put her hair in a pony tail on top of her head. Then somehow I got ahold of scissors &, you guessed it, I chopped off the pony tail. Poor doll looked so sad after that. I'm enjoying these memories!!)
We used to play jacks with the little rubber ball loved it, shuffle board was the game for adults i loved watching my Parents and Grandparents play, old maid cards, hop scotch with a rock, simon says, freeze tag, tv tag
I played a lot of double dutch and I was pretty good at it! LOL And, hula hoop...I got one as soon as they came out,,I think I was about 9 or so. I am 76 now! Good memories!
In the. south we called fireflies "lightning bugs" We loved to catch them and put them in a jar. My mom made us let them go before we went to bed. We had the same bathroom situation at our elementary school. I didn't understand the meaning of 1 and 2 so I was very confused and worried that I was giving the wrong signal. LOL.😂
Toni dolls were associated with the perm. I always wanted a Toni doll. I finally got one as an adult at an antique store. My mom starched my slips to wear under my full skirts when I was 13 in 1958. She used sugar water and hung them on the line. One time it was attacked by ants because of the sugar. Ha Ha.
We used to sit in the driveway and pop the caps with a rock, I sort of remember playing splits with jack knives, we’d throw a knife in the ground and we’d have to place our foot by the knife! I remember getting my bare feet stabbed a few times! We used to play nuns and priests and give communion with NECCO candies! I loved playing Jacks and jump rope! Great times for sure in Detroit!
Did you have a hula hoop? I liked playing with them. I also had fun roller skating and jumping rope/double Dutch. My sister and I played freeze tag, red light/green light, kick the can and baseball with the other kids in our neighborhood. We also liked to ride around town on our bicycles.
In school we wernt allowed to wear jeans or pants unless it was cold out!! After lunch we could buy ice cream sandwhiches for 6 cents. A boy got his girlfriend in 4 th grade 4 of them. I thought " ohh my hes wealthy to spend 24 cents on her!!" Lol
❤ Oh yes, she brought up so many memories to me again.Did you guys ever have to get under your desk?In case there was a air raid it was about that time we did Also red rover
Hi Sandra. I stumped myself. Lol. I had to google to find out how many squares there were in the game. Basically you drew a big chalk square with 13 smaller squares inside it that were numbered 1 to 13. Basically you flicked a soda cap into each numbered square in order first one to do it won the game 6:37
games: getting a (glass) jar from Grandmother to catch "lightning bugs" in to see who caught the most and which "lantern" would shine the brightest when it got completely dark - Grandmother made us let them all go before we came in for the night; Mother May I; Red Rover, Red Rover send ___ over: Drop the hankie; "gossip" also known as "telephone"; Paper Dolls (lots of Shirley Temple dolls sold in stores but most women's magazines and local papers contained paper dolls in the Sunday Paper); Head, Shoulders, Knees, Toes; (lots of these are circle games); I spy; Dodge Ball;
Go in and out the window Go in and out the window Go in and out the window For the highland gates are locked. We would play this in the basement of our school when it rained. Kids would be joined in a circle, and one would have to go in And out of the hands.
My fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Williams was mean. I was on an antibiotic and needed to take it through out the day, well, I raised my hand to go take my medicine with water, she told me to swallow it, so I did, and she says: you don’t need to get a drink now do you? She was a hateful person.
we played a game where you stretched out your arms and turned yourself round and round until you fell on the ground! I loved that one! It turns out that this game is a healthy one; you have to go one way for a bit then go the other way for another bit.
@@Sandrabrownhappinesspast60 Yay! I'd love when my older sister lost coz she would think she will really be an old maid! Oh she cried n squealed. Lol lol I'm bad! 😆 🤣 She did get married late in life. I told her it's coz she lost in old maid a lot! Lol lol
