We took a big risk and left all our show stock in our West Coast antique malls! So we've been shopping like maniacs to replace it all in time for our upcoming shows in Marshall, Michigan and Springfield, Ohio. Do we have enough fresh fun vintage and antiques for our collectors to want to come visit us?
We let you be the judge with this haul video preview, where we show off the fruits of a month of picking antiques and vintage cross country! Misplaced items are headed to their collectors now...graceful John Perry dolphins found on the prairie, elegant 1920s Czech jewelry found in a rough mountain town and a vibrant Blendo set from a biker's garage sale are among the 'rescues' we can't wait to show our Midwest collectors in person!
A big fresh collection we just acquired includes quaint quilts and three boxes of beautiful art glass part of the haul! Scarce pieces of Lotus Mist, blue Burmese, Rosalene and uranium glow Burmese include animals, ewers and a multi-piece fairy lamp that should make our Fenton collectors swoon. We're bringing it all, along with a 1950s Blenko seed bubble pouch vase, a deep green Coin Spot chalice and other modernist pieces to delight a lot of different decorators!
Childhood fun is the theme of the many boxes we scan as we contemplate how to pack it all! 1960s Thermoses and lunch boxes, rubber faced TV and advertising character dolls, banks, buttons, cards and tins, rulers and pocket knives...there is something for a lot of vintage kids to remember and restore to a place in their lives! 1940s childrens books, boxes of Carte-d-Vistas and photos, comic books...this stuff is ready to be dug through by today's collectors!
We're excited about our shows at Rosie's Auction House in Marshall, Michigan (Sep. 8-9-10) and Springfield, Ohio (Sep. 15-16-17), and all the newly found vintage we have to bring! We hope to see you there...but if you can't make it, you can pre-bid on 10 of the Fenton items at auctionzip.com under Rosie's Auction House!

Thank YOU George...thank God we all use, display, love, collect, learn about and enjoy this all so much. Some people's things who have gone on were used in a niece's Bridal shower yesterday and it was heaven. What the worth of a thing is in respecting, rescuing, sharing, giving, collecting, using, displaying as art, eating with, and wearing and remembering and truly enjoying all these things..I just love this...thank you so much.

Maybe my opinion is way out on a limb, but I think Uncle Remus is the American Aesop. He was a product of his time. As an author, we are all taught, "write about what you know." Which is what Uncle Remus did. And inside his stories were these great little morals - he wrote about reverse psychology (don't throw me in the briar patch) and patience (Tar Baby) and a lot of other things that were great to teach kids. What a shame that he has become politically incorrect because of the color of his character's skin. I remember reading them as a little kid - and thinking that they were fun, happy characters. I would love to have that book.
@jacquelynkirby1442

My mother told us stories. Brer rabbit and the tar baby was a favorite of mine. Wasn't little black sambo brave!
@persiphonehellecat
@persiphonehellecat 11 месяцев назад
YES! You get it! Uncle Remus was using his stories to teach kids things they should be in life. Just like Aesop. No difference between The Tortoise and the Hare and The Tar Baby - both about patience. Yes, the Tar Baby was my very favorite and I readily admit I used to own a gorgeous black cat named Tar Baby. I just think we should view him from a cultural perspective based on the time in which he lived. We seem to readily excuse Mark Twain for much, much more. These aren't racist stories - they are wonderful, thoughtful stories. And yes, I read them to my now 37 year old son proudly. @@jacquelynkirby1442
@CollaborativeDog
@CollaborativeDog 10 месяцев назад
While yes, the stories have morals at the end, the problem was that, contrary to Disney's portrayal, the actual author of the stories was Joel Chandler Harris, a white man, who wrote in stereotypical black dialect. Think of it as a written minstrel show.

I couldn't agree more, before "the purge" I read Uncle Remus to my school children and they learned lessons and laughed.
@persiphonehellecat
@persiphonehellecat 10 месяцев назад
Yes! And it is so sad to see a great movie like Song of the South being thrown into the fire. My granny read us the stories. She always made sure we understood people shouldn't treat others badly - but that this was the time Uncle Remus lived in and it was what he knew to base his "fables" on. I learned a lot from them. @@lucyposton5032

Good evening, George! I like those Tahitian boy and girl busts. Those have always appealed to me. Alexander Backer pieces would be my pick. Love that iron cat doorstop. I liked that Dennis the Menace figure. That was always a favourite comic strip of mine. I'd really like to have the "Little Black Sambo" book. I had one as a child, and I have no idea what happened to it. You have a ton of super-nice items! It would be fun to shop it! Thanks for giving us a peek at what you have for sale!

Hi there! I always like that bust pair too, though the gal with the hibiscus flower in her hair is my favorite. I buy every fun figural cast iron doorstop I can find, so glad to have one for these shows! You noticed Dennis, I got distracted and didn't mention him but he has a lever that makes his arm move. If you really do want Black Sambo, send an email, that would be easy to put aside. Thanks for watching me packing!

Funny story about vintage books. Talking with my grown kids a few years ago; I am about your age George. I was telling them about my favourite book as a kid ( I signed out from the school library so many times) When I told them it was " little black sambo" they laughed and said it was surely banned. I just loved the magical story the boy was from India I thought so being black made sense and growing in small Canadian town, sambo was just a name. I just thought it was a sweet story but understand why it is banned. After telling my kids the story my daughter surprised with a copy. (reproduction of course)

Some of these treasures will sell one at a time, or I group with other treasures, people are being very eclectic in buying and using single treasures and mix them with other items. I think people can miss out, I keep these single items and most of the time I find other pieces that may the same. Pretty fun to see what comes your way. Take care.

Yes! I used to go there. They depicted Little Black Sambo correctly as an Indian boy in the restaurants, but by the late 1970s they sanitized it all and it became super generic...and went out of business.
