@Carl le Pauvre dreadlock with shaved hairs is fine, but dreadlocks like bob marley doesnt fit white skin. Look at that guy in the movie, he became a bad guy because he was pissed. The blood on the camera lens was actually a total fluke. When it happened, Alfonso Cuarón thought the shot had been ruined and tried to yell cut, which would have been disastrous, since those long takes took so long to set up and this was their last chance to get it right, but his voice was drowned out by an explosion. Lubezki was the one who convinced him that, rather than messing things up, the blood was really a happy accident.
@BrandonLikesMovies
@BrandonLikesMovies 4 года назад
Truly added so much to that shot!! Thanks for that info, that's really cool!
@aussiejed1
@aussiejed1 4 года назад
They spent a lot of time and money to have digital editors slowly remove the blood splatter from the camera so it wasn't there for the rest of shot. You don't notice when watching generally, but if you pay attention to it, it slowly fades out.
@DeadPyro96
@DeadPyro96 4 года назад
@@aussiejed1 Is this true? I am pretty damn sure the long take ends when Theo enters the building and there is a hidden cut there. The camera pans through a dark spot and moments later the blood disappears from the lense. I think it's much more likely that they added the blood to the second shot digitally to match the original splatter and then just slowly faded it out. Removing it digitally sounds extremely hard.

@@BrandonLikesMovies Amazing behind-the-scenes video about the making of that long take, of the ambush on the car. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GJprbCuWdHo.html Very complicated. Director & cameraman on the roof of the car.....plus another camera on the inside of the roof. And something about the timing of the actors, as they had to quickly recline their seats & then raise them up again.....to allow room for the camera to rotate around. A lot of rehearsal went into that shot.

I finally saw Y Tu Mama Tambien last year. I expected it to be overhyped for me, and for a while, it was, but then its greatness really snuck up on me. I can be a little slow on the uptake, so it wasn’t until the narrator described the future of the fisherman that everything clicked. Children of Men borrows so much from that film, primarily how the camera gets distracted by the things happening around the characters, and becomes a story of the nation it takes place in as much as the main plot itself.

I know I’m a year late but this movie had references to London 2012 Olympics (the character wears a hoodie with it on). Filming started in 2006 so another 6 years for that to happen. Also the shard building is visible in the background of the starting scene, again construction wasn’t started until 2009 so they took early architectural art of what it would look like and made it with cgi. Amazing small details

So if you look for it there's a ton of religious imagery in this movie. It's almost an apocalyptic nativity. Key is Mary, who gives birth to the child who saves humanity. When it's first revealed she's pregnant, she's in a barn almost like a manger. Theo (Greek for "god") is a surrogate Joseph. They have to flee for their lives constantly. A soldier genuflects when he sees the baby and others say "Jesus Christ." The movie would work even if that subtext wasn't there, but I think it's too clever to just be accidental. Don't mean to go all Film Theory here.

One of my favourite films and it's great to see appreciation for it is growing - I truly believe it was ahead of its time and if made today it would be a major award contender. What really matters is that people are watching this film and experiencing the artistry and story. In 2006 I went to see it and was so blown away it was difficult to process how good it really is. It paved the way for other films using the long takes such as Atonement (another underappreciated gem, that would be a great reaction film) and 1917.

I avoid this film for so long, I don't know why it never appeal to me. But I remember watching this one like it's yesterday, let me tell you why I remember so vividly. I remember going to watch The Thing (2011) by myself and being very disappointed by it, coming home I stopped by Walmart just looking around wasn't planning to buy anything, just browsing through the $5 DVD bucket I saw Children of Men I've always heard it was a great movie years ago, but it never caught my attention for some reason, but here it is and it was going for cheap so got it. Came home and watched it and was blown away by it! From the opening scene to the long one take towards the climax I was hooked. From the characters to storyline to the cinematography and visuals everything is at top notch. But this film became a great film to one of my favorite films because of this, when Theo and Kee reaches the apartments and her baby starts to cry and everyone in the apartment from the rebels to the military stops fighting and all you hear is the baby crying I start to cry! Not sobbing, but streaks of tears were coming down my face. Halfway through Theo and Kee coming down the stairs I noticed it, so after the movie end I was curious to know why I started to cry (granted I haven't cry because of a film since Titanic but I was always 7 at the time) so was the story, yes, was it the characters I've become invested in, yes. All of it! But moreover it was because I was living in a household at the time where there was constant arguing and fighting and there were children (my nieces and nephews) in the house. And that hit me pretty hard and the idea or message behind the film and that scene is so powerful. After all these years it's still one of the best films I've seen.

I'm catching up on your videos, and it's nice to see you doing movies like this. I have this one on HD DVD, and I discovered this movie because of the online discussions about it at the time. I'm always happy to discover movies like this that I would not otherwise seek out.

This is one of my favorite movies, it's tragic that more people haven't seen it. Some good ones to watch if you haven't seen them yet: Requiem For a Dream, Memento, Amadeus, Zodiac, Brazil...

I was a huge fan of Brazil and of Terry Gilliam. I don’t think Brazil holds up that well. Maybe I thought it was too great. Maybe I overrated Gilliam. Don’t get me wrong, there are fantastic moments, but it doesn’t hold together for me as well as it once did. If one wants to see a Terry Gilliam movie, I’d go for Time Bandits (and I’d forget Baron von Munchausen entirely).

Emmanuel Lubezki aka Chivo (DP) is a genius along with Alfonso Cuaron. That 7 minutes continuous long take near the end took them about 14 days to complete. You should check the 3 Amigos of Cinema. Alfonso Cuaron, Alejandro G. Iñarritu, and Guillermo Del Toro. Fun fact: 2014 Academy Award for Best Director Winner: Alfonso Cuaron 2015: Alejandro G. Iñarritu 2016: Alejandro G Iñárritu 2018: Guillermo Del Toro 2019: Alfonso Cuaron

I'm split on camera lenses being hit with blood or whatever in movies. In one way it does give a sense of being there but it also works against it because what is the blood hitting? The camera. Kind of takes away from it.

This movie is a cinematic masterpiece. It was way ahead of its time, and that’s genuinely the only reason I can find to rationalize why it wasn’t recognized in the way it deserved. 10-20 years from now, this movie will be a common topic of study in university classes and film schools.

I saw this movie in the theaters. It was fantastic, but exhausting!! I felt like someone had grabbed me by the scruff of my neck and dragged me through this world with them. What was even more bizarre was that I was in a theater that doesn't get alot of traffic. When the movie was over the theater was empty, so I went into the lobby which was also totally empty. I was already heavily off-balance from the movie, but then I couldn't find any people! I went outside and there were no moving cars. Finally, I saw cars with drivers---but shit, that was a freaky day!

Sill one of my all-time favourite movies. Absolutely love it. I think I watched this around the first time I played the Half-Life 2 game and while that is sci-fi, both those stories resonated really well with each other, this is just more grounded in reality and grittiness.

at about 14:10 in this video, its in this scene, when they're walking out of the building and the refugees all stop and look at the baby awestruck. there is a girl, about 18ish, a blonde girl in the crowd, and she gets shot in the head, her head just cocks to the right and she drops. just like that. that death, SHOOK me. I will always remember this movie for that, I dont even know if anyone knows or remembers that death, and I mean, there is so much pointless death in this movie, but that one, just the one youngish girl just dropping.... i've NEVER, in any movie, been so affected by a death. she's a random background character, and yet that stays with me, I dont really fully understand why.

Another great pick! I love the world-building, performances and especially cinematography and action sequences but it still bugs me that Kee reads as a plot device. I want to know her better. She and her baby are driving the narrative but Kee isn't as fleshed out as Theo. I don't know if the book has the same issue. Still a worthwhile movie tho.

_I don't know if the book has the same issue._ The book is very different from the film, and the film is all the better for diverging from the source material. Kudos to the film-makers for recognising that ' the first pregnancy in over a decade' is the start of the story, not the end.

Have you seen "The Abyss" yet? I'm not sure if it would be the most interesting of movies to talk about, but still definitely a must-watch for me. (Some people find it a bit boring, but I personally loved the atmosphere in it.) The Director's Cut gives it a whole new meaning, but I think it kind of detracts from the more claustrophobic feel of the Theatrical release. The set design and just the crazy way they filmed it is worth the watch alone. And especially the behind-the-scenes documentary. Most of the cast and crew still to this day say it was one of the toughest film shoots they'd ever done. It also had some groundbreaking effects for the time, a couple of years before Terminator 2. (both James Cameron movies, of course.) Children Of Men is great, though. The main thing I remember about it is that Alfonso Cuarón was also the Director of Gravity, and Harry Potter: Azkaban. lol
