So sad that Hollywood changes the source material so much that only the core idea remains. His main characters are predominantly shlubby balding men in ill fitting suits that usually meet bad ends. The films give us Tom Cruise and Ben Affleck with happy endings. Too bad. So it's not all negative, Scanner Darkly is the most faithful adaptation. 8/10.
@plexus
@plexus 3 года назад
Technically it’s a short story. Most of his adaptations are from short stories... the ones that are from actual novels are, “Blade Runner”, “Radio Free Albemuth”, “The Man In The High Castle” (an Amazon Prime series which is really good) and “A Scanner Darkly”... (which is the DARKEST, most DEPRESSING fucking book of his I’ve read... and I’ve read 25 of his books. Fantastic book. Just depressing as all hell!) But yeah... any other movie or show other than those 4 I listed are all based on a short story of his, and most likely changed drastically from the source material. In fact, the only one that really sticks to Philip K. Dick’s source material is “A Scanner Darkly”.

Except that there's scenes with things happening that he, as a character either in the movie or in the "Recall experience/dream," he would have no idea about. He's not involved at all. Were this all in his head, those things wouldn't be there, only things from his own viewpoint. We, the viewers, can see things outside the protagonist's experience, but the protagonist himself can't. And since everything that only the viewer sees supports him actually being memory-erased/under-cover, then THAT is the reality here.

@@jp3813 It’s a great argument actually, however he could be dreaming of those scenes as part of the package to give him an edge in the dream. @@shiranuiaensland1442 Paul Verhoeven said the film is unambiguously 'reality' up until the memory implant scene. This is where things start to get muddy. After all, the salesman tells Quaid he'll "get the girl, kill the bad guys and save the whole planet". The techs in the impant room are talking about a new program called "blue skies on Mars". And when Dr Edgemar appears to Quaid on Mars, everything he says will happen if Quaid rejects the pill happens (the walls - of the apartment, anyway - come crashing down; he has visions of an alien civilisation; he believes he's saving the resistance, but turns out to have been Cohaagen's ally the whole time), and you could interpret the fade to white at the end as him being lobotomised. All that said, the ending is still intended to be ambiguous, which I take to mean that - especially since there isn't a sequel or anything - there is no 'canon' on whether it's real or not.

I think the best thing about this movie is the fact that it is TWO SEPARATE MOVIES playing at the same time. Both movies are fully functional stories, beginning middle and end, with fantastic twists and turns. The first movie is what you "hoped" it would be, that Doug really WAS Hauser, Sharon Stone was an operative (not his wife), going to Recall broke the tampering in his brain, he goes to Marns and saves the planet. The second movie is, everything at face value. He has a boring life with dreams of Mars, he goes to Recall, and when he sits down in the chair, that's the last "real" thing we see. From his 'meltdown' in that chair, to the end-of-movie kiss are the exact memory he bought from Recall, executed perfectly. This movie is genius because it says YES to both of those stories, constantly, while never invalidating the other. It's literally TWO MOVIES in one.

"I don't know what to believe at this point." PK Dick was a schizophrenic that dealt with paranoia and delusions, perhaps even a sort of divine insight (if that's possible). The vast majority of his work was trying to convey what this kind of uncertainty is like; from identity, to memories, to reality. If you want to read something of his, I highly recommend Ubik. Then Valis as a sort of semi fictional autobiography.

The original plan was to cast someone like Dustin Hoffman and at the end reveal that it was just the Rekall "dream". But once they cast Arnold they realized people wouldn't believe it was just a dream so they left it somewhat ambiguous.

According to the director is was a dream that started when he fell asleep at recall. Clues are 1. Speed of movie and editing changes. 2. At the beginning when he goes through x-ray no alarm and after recall there is the alarm. 3. Through the movie the Recall commercial music plays including at the end of the credits which is his clue to wake up.

This movie is based on a short story by Philip K. Dick (the same guy who wrote the novel on which "Blade Runner" is based) where it is explicit that everything in the end IS a dream the guys at Recall implanted in Quaid's memory but it's also based on repressed memories Quaid has, and they have to implant even more absurd memories to hide everything until they decide to implant a one about how he secretly saved the world as a kid by showing mercy and kindness to a race of diminutive mouse-like aliens that had come to destroy the Earth, but that also turns out to be true and a repressed memory. It's hilarious.
