the only “beauty” competition i’ve ever seen and enjoyed is the one at my local fair. anybody of any age can join and wear whatever they want, and show whatever talent they want and it such actual wholesome fun. last year a grandpa/granddaughter duo won with their duet of somewhere over the rainbow dressed as the lion and dorothy :)

As someone who is autistic, and was extremely nonverbal as a child, I'm used to parents doing the whole "they shouldn't be here doing things with the 'normal' kids" line. I would get bullied and harassed by both students and parents from things like cheerleading. I didn't want to wear a skirt, so we asked for me to wear pants. The amount of parents losing their shit *OVER A 10 YEAR OLD NOT WANTING TO WEAR A SKIRT* , just to further isolate an already lonely kid was disgusting.

As someone who has ASD (formerly diagnosed Asperger’s), it was 100% the parents like that mom who made my life a living hell while growing up. Every time in school, when eventually they’d find out from their kids that I’d have a slightly modified test or was allowed not to participate in certain gym activities (I have a really hard time doing crossed brain activities. I couldn’t even tie my shoes decently until I was 24, and even still I have trouble to this day!) they would flip their lids, exactly like in the video. Even after they found out why I’d been receiving “special treatment” they would either get defensive saying things like “All kids are special!/If she’s so handicapped, why isn’t she in a special Ed class or school?!” like this mom did or just completely stuck with the “that’s not a real thing!/If she’s autistic then everyone’s autistic!” Notion. Always, always, ALWAYS after this would happen, a good majority of their kids would start bullying me/avoid and bad mouth me at school. I had to quit public school and become homeschooled because of mom’s like her, so I hope her daughter grows up to be far more intelligent and far more successful than her pitiful mother ever has or will be :/ !

I am sorry you went through that! I also hope you are doing much better. I had learning difficulties in school and was on an IEP (individual education plan) so I could take my tests in a different room where it was quiter but luckily no one made fun of me for that. I once heard a qood quote about "what fair means" and what it really means isn't everyone getting the same thing, it means them getting what they need. For each person that's different. Some people don't get that (like that loudmouth mom in the video yelling about the poor child needing visual cues on stage)

that is so horrifying, I'm so sorry you had to deal with that. That argument of "well why aren't they in a *special school*?" is so so gross to me, it makes me feel physically ill. Basically they're saying I don't want to have to look at or engage with you, person who has different life experiments and needs, you're not 'normal' and that makes me uncomfortable. That's like saying a wheelchair user shouldn't be allowed in buildings with stairs. And the thing is, integrating children with a different range of needs and backgrounds is SO important to encourage empathy and openness early on. Of course some children need to be in separate schools that can really help them thrive but so many people of different needs and abilities can be brought together by tiny changes in policies or environments to make them accessible. I grew up in Ireland and went to primary (elementary) school with a guy who had ASD, which really impacted his engagement with a lot of stuff, so everyone learned very quickly what best suited his needs. We were 5, 6 years old? Nobody ever complained about him getting 'special treatment.' He had different needs, and different is fine. I went to high school with a guy who was colourblind, but that rare kind where you only see in black and white and your vision doesn't go beyond maybe a few feet or so ahead. So he was partially sighted and colourblind basically, he needed the kind of additional aids that a legally blind person would have. There was certainly bullying in my school, but he was never singled out for his sight. He wasn't treated like a child either, he was just another guy who needed a few extra things to account for his eyesight. Kids will adapt so easily to other people's experiences if you give them a chance, it makes me so mad when exclusionary nonsense like that is encouraged by parents and inevitably adopted by their kids. We ALL lose out on richer experiences when we keep people apart and limit the scope of our understanding.

My brother has the same thing. He was nonverbal til 2nd grade and was a biter. In first grade he was in regular classes and after a couple of days he bit a teacher during a bad “hype out” as we used to call it. After that there was alot of “why is this kid still here?” He did end up going to a “Special Needs school” that helped him alot. But I realised soon after that, at least in NJ, there aren’t many schools like that. So what I used to say (started saying this in high school) whenever someone said that was “ok, great, so your tax dollars will be used for that?” That usually shut them up quick 😂

8:27 this kind of thing actually happens. my uncle knows a guy that’s a reporter/photographer for a local newspaper, and he was once covering a pageant for little girls in the area. He was taking photos, and had a press pass. He started talking to the several other men in the back taking photos, assuming they were parents. They said they weren’t, and they also didn’t have press passes. He started looking into it and there have been strange men taking photos that were not related to the contestants or any form of press at EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. You can’t tell me the people that run these pageants don’t know they’re there. It’s so scary.

In regards to rice being the girls fave food, idk what special needs she has, but if it's Autism, (as someone who has been diagnosed with autism since 11) sometimes people with autism just tend to really like and prefer plain food and don't like things with too much flavour (my doctor informed my mom of this when I was diagnosed since my mom asked her if my autism had anything to do with my fixation on plain foods, and with meeting more people who are also autistic throughout my life, I've realized it's very true). When I was a kid about her age, plain white rice was also my fave food as well as plain pasta ☺️

Indeed, autism can present with heavy fixations as well as overstimulation. Heavy seasoning can certainly wind up being too stimulating. Either of these "symptoms" (sounds like the wrong word to me, hence the quotes) can lead to such fixations and it is possible that a person experiences both.

For the little girl with some special needs: I thought it was common knowlige that, when it comes to kids sports, children with physical or mental handicaps are often allowed extra “help” if that means they can compete within their own age-class. I mean, if an equestrian tween who are for example paralyzed in their legs competes in the regular pony classes, it is completely normal that they get to use their voice to call out commands and make use of an extra long “whip” in order to communicate with their horse properly, despite it otherwise being against the rules/frowned upon. And if you see an issue with it, you dont yell it at the kid while they are in the arena. You ask to speak with one of the judges. What is wrong with people!?

that is so horrifying, I'm so sorry you had to deal with that. I tried to make friends with the other girls, but they wouldn't even make eye contact with me. Many of them were crying and being yelled at by their moms. I asked my mom why were their mom's yelling at them, but she just shushed me, not answering my question. She knew what was going on and she hated every second of it. When the judging was done, we left, got McDonalds, and I never attended one again. So glad you didn't see the one with the one-year old. You would've been BEYOND furious, Ken. They literally put mascara on her, put a heavy fake bun on her already heavy head, pump her full of chocolate, mountain dew, and an energy drink so she stays awake, and once her head had been bumped really hard, all they cared about was the beauty score. Oh, and they also scared her with some dude in a wolf costume when she did her red-riding hood outfit. It's clearly abuse and it was hard to watch.

The issue isn't child pageants themselves; children should absolutely be allowed to express themselves if they want to! The issue lies in the parents and adults involved. If we heighten our standards for the parents who go (i.e. kicking out ANY parent that shows catty or abusive behavior), as well as ban child corsets/makeup, then child pageants would be much healthier and friendly to the kids. Just think about that one mom who let her child go to the pageant just to have fun. She clearly wasn't in it for herself. She just wanted her daughter to twirl around and have a blast. I got yelled at and screamed at because I was backstage (not dressing rooms mind you) empting the trash cans by some middle aged lady who was enraged that I, a boy, was backstage. It took the theater teacher coming over and settling stuff as I was just terrified. I also made the mistake of mentioning they weren't supposed to have food backstage to them when I went back again later to empty trash cans and you can probably guess the results. This isn't even to mention the unsettling sight of like elementary kids in way too little clothing with weird dances. Look if it's your thing then cool, do what you want and or encourage your kid if they genuinely love it. But that experience soured the idea for me

My daughter did cheerleading competitions her whole childhood and they had people that would sit in the stands and walk around to listen to parents talking trash. If you were caught saying something bad about another team or a child you were removed and so was your child. And the coach doesn’t have time to change everything to make up for your kid not being there, so the whole routine is ruined. Or if you’re on a small team and your kid gets removed they might not have enough cheerleaders to compete and they get disqualified. Never in a million years would you see parents yelling at each other like this.

It's like a tv show we used to get here in the UK on channel 4, called Teeny Boppers, they'd have kids this age dress up and mime to songs that were in the charts at the time, singing inappropriate lyrics, some dressing up like Madonna and looking the way these kids do, that show wasn't on for long I don't think, these pageants should be outdated just like that show.....in my honest opinion, should never have started anyway, kids being exploited really gets to me, I'm a mum.

This makes me so sad. I have two cousins who did/do pageants. One is an adult now and really enjoyed her pageant experience bc it was something that she chose, not her mom. My younger cousin is still young but started doing pageants recently bc she wanted to try it. Her mom is very careful to only let her do pageants that are a positive experience and she has loved it. It makes me sad that people take something that should just be girls having fun playing dress up, and make it a negative and often disturbingly sexual thing. Just let kids have fun and feel special!

My mother is the picture of class, she never yelled at another person in front of me. But she did say something to a substitute teacher who was awful to me (because I was special needs I was born deaf and I am dyslexic (I grew up to get my masters degree at Oxford so it all worked for me.)) Like I said no idea what she said all I know is once she was done talking with the substitute if she saw me she would tear up and for a while after that until I assume she quit. It was powerful the substitute would turn and walk away from me. Pretty cool. Grade school was hell until middle school when they tested my IQ and realized oh wait she's sarcastic and above average. I didn't have to do special education after that I just had to do study hall and take my test in a different room. But it has helped me in my adult life trying to be more of an advocate for those with learning difficulties because some of those kids can achieve way more than you'd think, and the workarounds we use lead to new innovations companies can use to expand their clientele base.

I owned and operated a children's beauty pageant for 8 years. MOST of the parents in pageantry are nice and put their kids first. However, it was parents like these that made me give up. Toddlers & Tiaras attracts parents that think being on the program with somehow help their child get into the movie/television industry. I knew a very nice mom that gave in and went on the program thinking she could put forth a clean image. The production staff edited her to look like a nut case & I knew better. Other pageant moms I have known on the program were "crazy stage moms" to begin with and the producers loved the ratings they brought.

I appreciate the attempt by the one lady to build her daughter’s confidence through pageantry, but I feel it was very poorly thought out. I personally don’t see how comparing yourself to other people in terms of beauty and being scored on it would ever result in a confidence boost. Maybe there is more to the pageant world that I am blind to as I have never been in or even seen one, but based off of what this show is portraying, it doesn’t make sense to me. I feel it would be much more effective to build her daughter’s confidence by praising differences among people and celebrating what makes everyone beautiful in their own individual ways.
@ltraina3353
@ltraina3353 2 года назад
I was thinking the same, like I understand what the mom is trying to accomplish, but pageants seem pretty cutthroat and maybe not the right place to boost ANY kid’s confidence. Her special needs child would probably not really understand all the uproar and anger going on around her, which isn’t going to boost her confidence. What probably WOULD boost her confidence is learning a skill, or finding a hobby that she truly loves. Mom would be much better off trying different activities with her till she finds something she likes. If she got into art, maybe she would find her creativity through painting beautiful pictures. That would lead to a much healthier self esteem and confidence. Hopefully she doesn’t continue the pageants…I really wish they didn’t exist!
