Chile’s President Sebastian Pinera has imposed a state of emergency over the Mapuche conflict.
The Mapuche, Chile’s largest Indigenous group, have been involved in five centuries of struggle for their ancestral land.
Mapuche demands have been mainly met with silence, leading some armed groups to attack trucks and farmland in the last 10 years.
With the Chilean president under pressure from right-wing factions in his party, troops are being sent to two southern regions hit by the violence.
Al Jazeera’s Lucia Newman reports from Santiago, Chile.

@Philip Gomez cool, can you show me your info on the matter then? does it take into account the number of Mapuche descendants living and working (legally) in Santiago, Concepción, Temuco? you know, where civilization is. Are any Mapuche getting actively alienated when they move into the city? can you show me any valid example of that happening systematically? The War of Independence, or as you call it "criolla revolution" (maybe you meant 'Creolle') set free every single slave and integrated by law every indigenous group into the new Chilean identity, allowing them citizenship just like any other person. Everyone lives on the same common ground made of a liberal set of rights and duties, but everyone knows that's not enough to ensure YOURSELF a decent modern way of living, if you and your family clan refuses for generations to adapt into the world and the Chilean system of life then nothing will happen, no one will go after you to kidnap you o something and take you by force into the city to work on the factories or something, the natives are free to live in whichever strange way they want to live, but they'll also of course won't yield the benefits that come from it. So they must be quite the shameless people to then go and cry about being dirt poor and only have a wooden hut to their name. I didn't take their life decision for them, therefore I have nothing to do with their misery. Irresponsible and lazy people perish quickly in this world and that's a good thing, also not my problem

Not a fan of violence however the snakes in charge talk about dialogue when indigenous groups have been asking for exactly that for years without success all that time forestry & mining companies strip the land & what can't be farmed mined or sold is made into nature sanctuaries, And what about the inhuman nature that native peoples have had to endure at the hands of Some & settlers/farmers on what little land they are tacitly given to live on? something had to give & it has & nothing beyond either helping native cultures or their descendants to gain back their heritage in land will suffice.
@karlashdown5228

@Kratos Ghost It depends on the farmer you're grouping them all in the same boat my friend, There are the greedy farmers(Land Owners) & then there are the subsistence barely making it through year to year but still hoping for better Farmers, I think the indigenous Groups are mainly talking about massive absentee conglomerate land owners who have people working the land for them & often dirt poor people on land, that has been acquired by often devious but official means by the absentee owners. This is Chile the land of the oldest human settlements found in South America & also of shits like Pinochet it has a very long history thousands of years before Europeans invaded & conquered. In NZ where i live it's not quite as long a history as my ancestors the Maori are very much part of mainstream society & we don't have the hundreds of years of discrimination to catch up with Chile.

Politics 101 : 1) If you do not agree on something, redifine it until it fits your expactations. 2) If you want to prevent change and use of force against the ruling class, mislead people to peaceful protests being a tool for change, but then if it really would lead to change, frame the movement as illegal and frame their use of language as forceful, which is the opposite of peaceful. Now you have the population behind you if you destroy them by force.. Now you know why peaceful protest does not work, because it is not meant to work. In this world, if you want something, you have to take it and not wait until someone does give it to you, otherwise you will wait all your life and die without it. ❤️Mapuche❤️HEROES❤️

Those of you familiar with the history of this region will understand that dialogue and some sort of land distribution program will be the only solution to this. I know you may not like the sound of land distribution, but it has to be on the table. The Mapuche are a large group of people who have historically defended their rights to their land but who also have a history of peaceful coexistance with those who do not encroach on their territory. They fought the Spanish for a very long time, and eventually the Spanish just agreed to leave them be, establishing an uneasy yet mutually beneficial relationship with the Mapuche that lasted until the Spanish were expelled from South America by the wars of independence. It was Chile and Argentina that reignited the wars and took over the Mapuche lands in the 19th century.

An average Nordic Conservative will support a welfare state but advocate cutting taxes on the rich, whilst a conservative in Africa or the Middle east probably supports FGM and death penalty for gays. Either way, the claim for “limited government” is usually touted by Conservatives when really they just want to punish people that they think are inherently deviant in their narrow and destructive worldview.

In Mexico, in the mid 90's, some random guy, subcomandante Marcos, and his guerrilla did the same in the state of Chiapas. Guerrilla forces rose up in arms to fight against the injustices of the government towards the local indigenous communities. Guess what? Marcos cared little or nothing about the natives. Same thing might be happening here. The leader of the insurgent group might not care about the Mapuches; he has his own interests. The problem is the government has for decades continued and likely will continue to do nothing about illegal logging. And instead of penalizing their actions after they came to light they moved towards legalizing them. So youths are going to do what non city youths are going to do when feed up. Instead of gathering somewhere and attacking random people and businesses they target infrastructure offices and property of the companies making the bucks at their expense and those that support or live thanks to those actions. Think loosely organized militias that can achieve many short term objectives and are expensive to go after due to the terrain and weather. One problem with the dialogue option is, well... who do you dialogue with and ehat do you dialogue with? What many don't seem to understand is that "mapuches" technically don't exist as a proper group, it is the term used for the several groups of people that speak mapudungun, like pehuenches or picunches and more. And those groups are divided into clans, tribes and family groups. Each with their own opinion, which is actually fairly traditional to the mapuche (a reason why the spanish simply couldn't cut the head like woth the incas and aztecs). Groups want different stuff, from full independence (a minority), recognition and help by the state (mayority) and that the status quo is kept (a minority too, but bigger than the full independence). The fact is that negociations and dialogue have been attempted and some compromises have been made (even the dictatorship searched an agreement with the mapuches), but none that everyone agreed, since there is always a group that stays out or rejects the agreement. There is still willingness to talk, and the mapuches plight is even seen in a sympatetic light by an increasing number of people, but the general consensus is that these armed groups are criminals that must be stopped. Not because of their supposed reason to fight, but because of their actions. They have burned trucks, churches, rural hospitals and equipment, they have confirmed links to drug cartels, they are heavely armed (prohibited on Chile) and they have killed several people, from cops to agricultural workers, to old people whose only crime was living in some land their grandparents bought. They even attack other, less radical mapuches. So the military isn't deployed to destroy the mapuche people, many want dialogue with them. But with this criminals? Those are the reason the army is there

It's not their land anymore clown. They lost fair and square to conquest by the Spanish back then. What's different than any other nation state, empire or tribe conquering another. Colonialism died long ago in the 1800s for the Americas, they all got their independences from their colonizers, why didn't they try and take it back then? And they didn't, they didn't put up anymore of a fight and lost the right to the land with it. Not their land anymore, go cry a river over something that happened hundreds of years ago.

@@Unregistered.Hypercam.2. Actually more like grand parents or for some of them even just parents, the Mappuches were the most recent group to be colonised in the 1890's--which is barely 20 years before the first world war--thats very recently many elders in their community knew people growing up who had been colonised by the Mappuches, so its very recent. Please do some research on the history of The Mappuches and Chile and you will understand everything
