The girl narrating this did SUCH an amazing job. She told the story from EVERY point of view. She talked about how sad it is that Travis had to die, but also how it needed to happen, but the whole scenario shouldn’t have begun in the first place. And how Sandra, despite all that she did wrong, lived a sad life, and from her pov especially, it was really horrible what happened. @@MusicAndSkittles I bet she died because of the face transplant, the body naturally tries to kill any foreign "body" That gets in the system, that's why these people take immunosuppressants that make sure this immune system kind of goes to sleep, the outcomes are all bad though: - you'll need a new transplant because the medicines are not able to keep the foreign body alive anymore, so you decide to go under surgery, which is not a 100% safe procedure, often it has a 50% possibility of being successful. - you'll need a new transplant, but you don't have the money to afford it, so all you can do is appreciate the time you're left with before your own body kills itself (or more precisely the foreign body). - another way of dying after a transplant is by the medicines themselves which, like I've said, make your immune system weaker and therefore it makes you more likely to die due to other health conditions (these immunosuppressants also increase the risk of getting cancer).

In my country (Norway) there's this one chimpanzee that was kept in a domestic household after his mother in the zoo rejected him and bit his fingers off. The owner of the zoo decided to take the chimp home and raise him (as chimpanzees are a threatened species, he didn't want the poor baby chimp to die). He raised him together with his wife and two daughters and the chimp lived like a normal human child. The zoo owner used Julius (the chimp) as an attraction to the zoo, and while he was small he was allowed to be pet and held by visitors, but after a few years (I think 3 or 5 years, I don't remember, but he was still small in size) he was too dangerous to be kept around humans. They tried to reunite him with some of the other young chimpanzees, but he didn't understand their body language and got scared and wanted to go back to the humans. Julius then escaped multiple times because the cage he was kept in wasn't secured properly, and he attacked people (not as severely as this situation, but he bit a truck driver). Poor Julius got too big to be with the only kind he knew, and got very depressed after getting locked up in this prison-like enclosure, and they debated on wether or not to put him down due to him not living a thriving life. The leader of the chimpanzee "pack" died of old age, and so the zoo owner and keepers decided to put Julius back in to try to make him into the pack leader. It luckily worked out and is still living with his own kind in the chimpanzee pack in Norway. He still gets super happy when he gets to spend time with people through the gates, and love to do "human things" like paint, eat cake, drink soda, and play with human things (clothing, toys, sun glasses, etc.). I'm so glad that the people who worked with Julius actually knew how wild animals should live, and reunited him with his own kind successfully. I wish something similar happened to Travis, as I've seen a similar situation (Julius) have a better ending.

This is why having pets is such a big responsibility. Not only does it require a lot of attention from it's owners and it's a big money investment, but accidents like this is always prone to happening. In my opinion, with buying any exotic animal like this, more than extra precaution should've taken place, especially when you own a 200+ pound chimp. Rest in Peace to everyone in the story, especially both Travis and Sandra. And I know this video was really hard to make for Hannah, but I'm glad she still covered the story.

it seems like a no-brainer that owning undomesticated, 'exotic' animals should be illegal for private citizens. qualified & licensed rescues/rehabilitation centres should be the only places to find these animals besides their natural habitats.

Australia is super strict and it works pretty well. Only native exotics are allowed unless you have extensive training and apply for a license that is quite expensive and register every animal. Even native exotics are heavily monitored if they are potentially dangerous or have potential to be taken from the wild (snakes, lizards, some birds, etc). Of course not everyone follows the rules but it does help in reducing the exotic animal trade.
@freelancescientists
@freelancescientists 3 года назад
@@noway8222 that definitely sounds like a much better system, although I must admit I can't see a reason for individuals to have exotic animals in the first place, even if they're native species. still, things aren't black and white, and I'd much rather have Australia's approach than the US one.

@@freelancescientists because there's an appreciation for the animal. I keep taratulas because they're easy to care for, in abundance, are an odd pet, and remind me how beautiful australian nature is. It just depends on your definition and if the animals have become mainstream.

I read a more in-depth account of this incident where, apparently, Travis had been showing signs of aggression ever since reaching sexual maturity and his mother dosed him with human-grade Xanax to keep him calm. The trouble is, Xanax makes chimps hallucinate vividly. So when he attacked, Travis was both in a deep state of emotional distress due to grief from the loss of family members, AND violently hallucinating. Idk but just knowing that he was most likely just as scared as the humans involved during the entire incident makes it twice as heartbreaking.

If you look harder at Sandra, she wasn’t that great of a person. She had a prescription medication addiction and was the cause of her daughter’s death. She took some pills and then got behind the wheel of the car with her daughter. Charla and her daughter had experienced hard times, and had stayed with Sandra for a period prior to the attack, Sandra used this to guilt Charla to come help her with Travis. Charla did not want to come help, she told Sandra to call the police.

@gregjayonnaise8314

Animals can be kind of wishy washy. Chimps are naturally territorial animals that will attack each other if provoked, and have even been known to commit cannabalism. I think the Elmo might have unsettled him, like he thought she was stealing his toy, so even if he did recognize her, he probably got pissed. Also, chimps who get aggressive also fight OTHER chimps, who are usually as strong as they are and can take a hit. It’s likely Travis was so close to the women that he assumed they were chimps, too, and treated them as such, without understanding that they were a lot weaker.

@Bioshocking12

So I know a tiny bit about how chimps process visual information. Their working (very short term memory) is way faster than ours. It’s called the cognitive trade off hypothesis. We have more complex brains, but the chimp brain is still uniquely adapted to survive in it’s environment. Furthermore, chimps have to make decisions faster and rely more on instinct to assess threats in nature. Chimpanzees are terrifying warriors and are capable of rough group attack strategy. Travis’ brain evolved to do the exact same thing. My guess: in an interpersonal interaction with a human, the basic difference in stimulus-response time and threat assessment increases the likelihood of miscommunication in this kind of situation. Think about this as well; chimps don’t change their appearances like that. When Jane Goodall first arrives at Gombe to study them, they were extremely weary of her. Once she’d been accepted, the apes were fascinated by her pale features. Looking at it for that way, I think it’s very plausible that this change in her appearance would have been enough to cause confusion, especially in a state of stress. I hope this was helpful information!
@stephaniemomma
@stephaniemomma 3 года назад
Even if he still recognized her, it was probably very confusing, even terrifying or traumatic. The first time my husband shaved his beard my daughter wouldn’t unlock the door for him. She was 7 and he was in his very distinctive work uniform. He may have known it was her and distrusted her for changing like that.
