@@ed1567 Modern day feminism is the equivalent of saying "female supremacy". Modern day feminism is worse than cancer. David Sevilla-Chiang is just a 'Simp' or 'Incel', if you will. @@RanchDressingPop-Tarts oh you want to change sides? Men are dared to fight someone if they are challenged to a fight or else they get bullied and laughed by women, a women can easily scream rape and blame a random guy and they will arrest him, everyone has there disadvantages and its as hard to be a men as it is to be a women, feminism nowadays is telling men to not rape which i get why its bad but it is as illegal as murder, there is consequences to it, women and men from all races (at least at the majority of the world) have the same rights, they are not the same but everyone has the same rights, you cant just protest to the government to stop rape when they already have bad consequences to it
Hey guys... this person is making a pretty valid point here and isn't really being unfair here. She's not talking about anything extreme... She's actually being rational... So why all the hate?
Yea the point she made in the beginning by stating that in the past men used to lead because they were more powerful and that made sense. And now times have changed and physical power is not the determining factor as to who makes a good leader in society today. Well she either forgot to include or she is blindly unaware that to become a leader takes more than just 'intelligence' as she put it. In fact many highly intelligent people make extremely poor leaders. What makes a good leader is someone who is driven, logical, courageous and assertive. These are still masculine traits that have a very strong link to higher testosterone levels. It is biologically natural that men are designed to make good leaders. Of course not all men, but the few men that do have this trait, seem to be in a greater number than the few women who share those traits. Just like there are some exceptionally gifted females who are stronger and faster than me because I am an average man, but there are far more gifted male athletes compared to female athletes that we make it a point for them not to compete against each other. Now give a woman a fair shot to become a leader or president, Im all for that, but if she does not succeed don't blame that on some evil plot by men trying to keep women down
This is actually good feminism, not the radical extremists we hear more about on online, while yes therw are bad feminist, but there are good feminist who are fighting for real problems for women, not stupid one's like "mansplaining" and "manspreading".
Funny thing is that this is an old video, it's just been reposted. Speaking to mostly about feminism that's needed in African countries. Most people didn't even listen to this fully. So what exactly has she said that you object, or is it just the term feminism that makes you dislike something that isn't radical, or insulting to men?
This was an amazing TED talk. I'm disappointed in the people that disliked without even watching because this could have opened up some of your closed minded thoughts and feelings.
Imagine how much happier we would be how much freer to be our individual selves if we didn't have the weight of gender expectations... This speech was powerful and inspirational, thank you very much Chimamanda.
No, most of them actually watch the video first, instead of denying anything against your narrative ( this goes for right wing and conservatives as well ) you should listen and take out the best out of their narrative and reflect on what you are saying, think about it. I know i’m very late but still wanted to write this, btw, don’t mind the spelling
Why are there 5k dislikes?? She is absolutely right I loved this. I hate how feminism is misunderstood. Feminism is for equality and yes a lot of feminists take that and make it about females being superior but this woman emphasised that this is not how she sees it and she gave valid arguments about why feminism is still needed, at least in Nigeria. Feminists also want to stick up for men who are treated unequally, they just want equality. How can you be against that?
@@MKGirl317 Tell me what rights do men have over women(doensnt just have to be laws), and once you tell me, I will tell you problems men have, and if you convince me through the list that feminism is required then I will become a feminist. NO one is arguing that women don't deserve equal rights, all men are saying is that we have already reached that, and we are moving in the other extreme.
Most of the dislikes probably did not watch this video. It's hard to deny the experiences she brought up, especially living in Nigeria where these backwards views and behaviours are the norm against women. Experiencing these developing cultures first hand really show how we limit the women in everyday life.
The LIKE to DISLIKE ratio in this video is so telling of the world we live in. Even the most reasonable take on feminism is met with this level of resistance. We have a loooonnngg way to go, world! Catch up already!
This comment section… As soon as somebody mentions the word _feminism_ everybody gets triggered 😱 And the video is so good, reasonable and comprehensible. But it seems like most of the commenters didn't even watch it.
Before you dislike I reccomend watching it through before assuming shes the majority. I really think the reason humanity is so unbalanced is because of putting someone in the majority the majority makes feminism look like Riots and men hate but really feminism is advocating womans rights.
I keep hearing how women are paid so much less. I worked 12 hour days with one day off ever 2 to 3 weeks for months on end to learn as much as I could. I moved up several positions and started a business. All my women supervisors complain about working over 48 hours a week and dont want to go on installs. Men at the top are a very small fraction of people willing to sacrifice so much for work. I worked so many of my kids birthdays and have been out of the country for more wedding anniversaries than home. I would hire every woman that walked the door with a bonus if they put in the hours we require. They just dont want to sacrifice so much of their life for work.
When I watched this I felt a lot of things and at the top was utter shame with myself at the fact that few days ago,a man asked if i was feminist and I utterly denied feminism. Let me now declare that I am wholly feminists.
This was a wonderful video and she spoke eloquently and intelligently. Shame on all the people who downvoted because of the title without even watching it and listening to her points! Idiots
If someone made a video "We should all be Nazis" would you watch the video, or just leave a dislike? Feminism has destroyed so many innocent people's lives, and guilt tripped so many young men and boys. no one wants to listen to you lunatics anymore, just go away.
Can’t blame them most people think of the type of feminism that hates men and don’t wanna waste time listening to another feminist who they think will just talk about how women are oppressed and men should bend over for them
@@kjullthedemon yes because the holocaust correlates so well with people having common sense in trying to erase artificial gender norms?? I watched the whole video and not once did anything even remotely close to the Nazis cross my mind. The only reason feminism is being compared to something so crude nowadays is because of ppl with ur mind set giving it some atrocious definition by nitpicking "man-haters" etc and calling it "feminism".
Ain't gonna lie, I felt like this was gonna be some generic "lemme talk about oppression and racism", but her anecdotes and jokes paired with her foreign experience made this video very enlightening.
why are people disliking this? I really don't get what people find offensive or "bad" about this video, she's just explaining gender equality, why would anyone take issue with that?
Because they should have named it "gender equality" instead of "feminism". And also, most people are subscribed to TED because they want Science and New Technologies. This is why they complain about this video
It's exactly as Alexandre Bolot says. the term"feminism" itself is problematic. Feminism nowadays does not discriminate between equality and privilege for women. They, in fact, do not even recognise the latter, nor do they see the necessity for men to have rights, but they make groups that claim that all men are rapists and exploit the term of rape to mean any possible contact or glance (by men only of course). Feminism has become discriminating itself, but does not publicly acknowledge this. So, bad choice to promote feminism as a whole.
+Mo Gunn I've taken several feminist courses at university and spoken with feminists in feminist forums and in person, too. Mo Gunn, it's easy to tell people that they don't know anything if you don't bring up any arguments yourself. I don't see any feminist out there saying that men are not the only rapists, that women can be abusive too, that feminism used to claim equality and now claim privileges for themselves on a political level. While Wollstonecraft wrote fiction portrayed women imprisoned without any solid evidence into asylums by their husbands ("The Wrongs of Woman"), today women advocate the same treatment for their husbands (courts in Israel and some in America do not allow any defence to husbands accused of sexual abuse - they are automatically condemned). Men have to pay for their children, but are not allowed as often custody. Courts charge lesser punishments on women than on men for the same crimes. Domestic violence on men is not acknowledged, and yet feminists around the world have the audacity to claim to fight for equality. Where are the feminists when it comes to these issues? No, feminism looks for equality only when it can gain something out of it. Playing always the "victim card" for their own rights, they have simply become abusive.

*OKAY* I just finished watching the whole video. I wonder why the video has so many dislikes...even when I first opened it around 10 minutes after it was uploaded....weird! *Anyway*, I like how the speaker pointed out the cultural barriers both men and women face, and how it's seen as "that's how our culture is" rather than "we don't think this is right and we should change it" type of thinking...seeing how "cultural" things are defined by the people, not the other way around. Overall, I'd say this is worth watching as it addresses problems both genders have in our current societies, and it also gives us an idea of how different cultures (Nigerian in the speakers case) see genders, and how toxic it can be. The part about how "big rules" are given to men in the past based on physical attributes (for wars and whatnot) is an interesting bit that I've never heard about before. *I'd advise anyone who's hesitant to watch this because of dislikes to do so.* And to you who disliked it without watching...try listening first before automatically disliking for no reason. It just might give you a new perspective on things you didn't think of before.
wow. i loved this speach. she made her point very clear without leaving the struggles for men out. she talkt about men and women being equal and expressing their feelings and passions equally. I thought the comments are about people agreeing with her because she talked about mens issues in society, too. how can you say women try to take mens power away? did you even listen? this is not what this is about? it is very hard for me to understand that so many people do not understand even though it is for their benefit...
I watch this video every year & I'm still blown away by how much Nigeria is similar to Kenya. The number of dislikes on this video is evidence how important feminism is.
I love how the people on the comments are making fun of this through a screen while sitting on their couch with potato chips and a Starbucks they only bought to take an Instagram of And she is up there, who started as a child in Nigeria, and now is standing on a stage giving a TED talk But they are making fun of her? It's so heartbreaking to me that a woman can be so articulate, so brilliant and (I'm sorry) chest-beating dumb men say "uuuuugh no" and they're respected more. This culture is sad.

Just reading the comments section you can realize why feminism is important. Maybe some of you should watch the video to understand what it is about. It is a fight for rights, HUMAN rights. Some people are so focus on the word itself that they can't see how important it is. P. S: Thanks TED for finally uploading this talk to RU-vid, been waiting for it since I saw it on your webpage. Great talk!
I don't understand why people are so quick to say we shouldn't do something because it directly opposes the views of society. So many times when you talk about sexual assault or sexual harassment people will say that it is expected because, "that's what happens when you put woman and man together". They say it like it isn't worth trying to solve the problem. We all have been gifted with free will and control our impulses, so why should it be okay for someone to sexually assault someone, or harass them, even if they are your significant other. Men (not all, but those that think as i just described) especially need to start thinking of women as humans, that means trying to find a middle ground with them on all issues, and trying to see the world critically in their eyes rather than dismissing their problems immediately. Really what i'm trying to say is that men tend to dismiss the problems of women more than what should be, because either they don't try to understand or because men benefit more from dismissing their ideas and this really needs to stop! To all men who read this and disagree; Mature up and understand that a weak mind is one that listens to their impulses rather than reason.
Some men are just afraid of a woman that is not afraid of them. Some men just don't want women to confront their views. Some men are just afraid of a woman talking them straight to the eyes, equal-equal. Some men are just afraid. Some men are just not enough men.

Yes, only men and women together can create a world of gender equality. I'm proud to be a feminist and to be marrying a feminist. Some people seem to be scared of the word feminist even though they support gender equality. Let's bind together and not fight over a stupid word.
Everyone who disliked without watching I'm convinced is less than intelligent because to generalise with pre existing feelings from the title is to be taken with crowd and lacking in personal curiosity
Excellent! I'm a single female over the age of 50. I'm a teacher. Almost daily I'm asked by my students if I am married, if I will get married, do I have children, have I ever thought of adoption, do I have a boyfriend. I always thought the marriage question was sexist because they perceive that women have to be married, especially as a teacher. I think the question of having children is either because that is expected of women (sexist) or they like to imagine what kind of parent I would be to them. All of this I think of as sexist and I challenge their perceptions. After listening to the presentation, I will add a question -do you ask male teachers the same questions and if not then why not?
Excellent talk, and an excellent speaker, very charismatic and charming too. She brought up a lot of good points, but I'd like to refer to one in particular. 14:54 -in my language "husband" also means "owner", and in my country the establishment in control of marriage and divorce treats women as inferior and insignificant beings. For example men are the ones who give permission for divorce. I've even seen cases in which even after some men had left their wives to have other families abroad, so long as they refused a divorce(for their own selfish reasons), their wives would not be granted divorce and can't remarry and have all sorts of rights. These women are known here as "divorce refused(women)" (not sure how else to translate it). According to said establishment, that's fine, because a woman who cheated has committed adultery (the literal term is "has whored", for a lack of a valid term\word in English) and a man who cheated "has tripped". They are(that establishment) also very good at taking a lot of money from people. For a lot of my own reasons, I never wanted to get married anyway(find a partner, find mutual love, maybe even live with them, sure. But not marry), but it's things like this that make it seem even more pointless to me, I feel like even if I'd gain a few more rights, I'd also be selling a part of my soul and existing rights to them, so thanks, but no thanks.
I LOVE feminism! 💗 It has made my life SO much easier. - I don't need to open the door, pull out the chair, pay for the date, pay for any gifts, comfort her when she is sad, lend her my jacket if she is cold, listen to her boring stories, repair her car, house or appliances, or give her ANY special treatment at all. I don't need to be sweeter, kinder or softer to her, than I would be to the hardest men I have ever known. It is absolutely awesome! I can treat women EXACTLY as I would treat a Russian oil rig worker, and if women don't like it, there is nothing they can do about it. They cannot even complain, because this is equal treatment! I do not have to do ANYTHING for women, that I would not do for a coal miner, or lumberjack. It is absolutely fantastic! Feminism has saved me SO much time and money. I LOVE feminism!!
not even once did she say anything bad about men. still there are men who hit the dislike button because of their fragile male ego. It's sad really to see that.

I view women and men as being equals--neither gender being inherently superior to the other--however, I can't help but feel guarded against this movement whenever it is brought up. I feel that feminism spends more time condemning me for being an oppressor and a villain rather than include me, a man, as a complimentary and essential counterpart to women, within the human race and of society. Men and women both ultimately desire equality and and even playing field--I just can't see feminism ever being successful when all I hear about is 'the injustices women receive from the villainous, power hungry men, who need to be cast down.' That said, I think Chimamanda brings up some very interesting points in this talk, and does so without so much of the condemning nature I hear from so many others. I was surprised when I finished this video, that it had received so many dislikes.
Well you are, by defenition, a feminist. However many people out there have plagued the meaning of it unfortunately and tainted the name in to something it isn't. It is true that so many atrocities, statistically and culturally, happen more to women/children in the world, usually done by other men, but ofcourse women are also involved, but statistically less. Of course the highest problem is the one that needs more focus, but that should never exclude men. But ask yourself, do people in your surroundings listen more to what a man has to say? Or a woman? Or does gender ever matter? Analyse that in you surroundings and you'll see. Do we treat women and men differently? If so, how? And why?
We need to realize that feminism is not hateful but based on equality. And the reason behind the name is because women and men both are not treated both the same but women are worse treated than men. Both are not treated as they should be. Feminism is based on equality.
Ult_R4nger 94 how about not being able to vote till 100 years ago, and people still are saying we should repeal the 19th amendment. And no one is saying that men should be taken the right of vote away.
Because, sadly, the word "feminism" has turned into something different to what this woman says, the world is not just Nigeria, although what she says is something worth hearing and deserves promotion. But imagine a video entitled "We all should hate men" thats how feminism sounds in some countries where 48% are men, just like Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie says.
Most people disliked the video and left. The average watch time is 5 minutes out of a 30-minute video. And so far this video drove their subs down. Normal average watch time is 1/3 of the actual length of the video. But 5 minutes is only a sixth. That's just evidence that people disliked and left.
Excellent work!!! Great great presentation. Strangely I was just speaking on this. I am a man but this opened my eyes a little more. Funny but poignant.
Media intrusion has completely ruined what feminism truly is, it's also horrific how people dislike the video and connect this brilliant woman to the ignorant women you see in triggering videos. This video does not target men or gloat about women, it is a truly neutral video. Also, if you believe feminism doesn't have a place anymore then you need to put down your phone and go experience the real world, where gender gaps are so apparent. I personally do not identify as a feminist, I don't feel it necessary to label oneself under a cause, but I am convinced there are too many preconceptions of how men and women are supposed to behave within society. And she is right it needs to change 👍🏻
Feminism: Feminism is a range of political movements, ideologies, and social movements that share a common goal: to define, establish, and achieve political, economic, personal, and social rights for women. This includes seeking to establish educational and professional opportunities for women that are equal to such opportunities for men. Notice the word equal, why are you all hating on equality?
My favorite ted speech of all time; she touches on the movement so well and explains the issue while also considering intersectionality as a factor -- brilliant.
Look people like jargon to sound to know what they talk about but this is almost always wrong because if someone knows about something truly they can explain it without jargon and in ever reducing complexity. Like a great teacher
That's what it should be, but in most cases women that class themselves as feminists seem to think they deserve more than men, and use it as a shield to criticism
That isn't feminism, that's an idiot using a word incorrectly. If someone went around saying they wear a red coat, when their coat is blue, you wouldn't change the word red to mean the colour blue.
mannosan it is no where near the same thing. women and men are already equal in America exept family law, where men are routinely f***** over, Other than that, I promise you can't find any rights men have over women.
I am a guy and she is right on point except she had forgotten the fact that women are emotionally driven whereas men are much logical compared to their counterpart. About the pay gap, gender discrimination isn't the only factor ..Ofcourse, it is one of the factor but there are lot of other factors too such as sacrifice, work time, dedication and ambition in which mostly men are better than women. Honestly, in this millennium or recently , the top companies still choose men for the highest tier job only because that is profitable. Hope you ladies understand that. Maybe in Nigeria and other parts of the world , the situation is as she addressed but not in the developed countries.
The waiter, in the speakers example is ACTING correctly; the waiter traditionally acknowledges the PERSON that phoned in to order their table, NOT the woman who shows up, with whom ever. - unless she is hosting the gathering or social outing. If you are a woman, and you are the "head of the household", it's expected you will be up front - of both the male members, and any other women that may be present.

Both of you should be ashamed of yourself. Unless you're a Nigerian and have been in same position you should save your "supposed" opinions for your kids and yourself. Raising menaces into the society. You and people that thinks like you are the reason change In this world is so much harder because you keep the cycle going.
I agree, Africa needs feminism. I find it ridiculous that feminists concentrate their efforts on the US/Europe when this sort of thing is happening in other countries
Americans (and other countries who treat men and women equally) need to understand that 'Feminism' has a completely different meaning in other countries. For us, it's all about giving same treatment and rights to women as men. Being pissed off at us for supporting feminism doesn't make sense.
It's certainly sad to see people so opposed to any idea that conflicts with their current view. This is an idea worth sharing, it may be uncomfortable to some of us at first, but we must open up to it or at least give it thorough consideration.
Actually, I immediately disliked the video but then watched it and I was surprised... it is actually a sound video and has some good points as its about sexism in Africa which exists whereas sexism in America/Europle
An erudite speaker brings up important issues for both genders... but everyone just came to dislike it and then left without watching it. Are people stupid?! This was a great talk!
