Salvaged wide pine boards, some more than 200 years old, are the material of choice for Norm's version of this free-standing Shaker-inspired cabinet. More than seven feet tall and featuring a flat-paneled door and five interior shelves, this versatile piece proves an ideal kitchen pantry, linen or sweater chest.

I could quietly sit in a corner of that workshop with a coffee and just watch the craftsmanship all day.

Honestly, so would I. There's so much to learn from a chance to work with great tradesmen, especially when they're willing to answer questions and let you get your hands dirty a bit if at all possible so you get a chance to be a part of the build. I find I learn best by reading/listening and then doing it myself immediately after.

I don't remember hearing his sense of humor come out back in the day, but obviously I just missed it. Everybody needs a central plaid shirt hub!

I could sit and watch Norm for hours also. Wait, I sat and watched Norm for every single episode of NYW. I have them on VHS and still watch them today. Thank You Norm and Russ for all the years of high quality entertainment and learning!

24:26 Norm used to joke around more. There is a later episode where they’re working in his bedroom, and when he opens the closet door, there are a dozen identical plaid shirts hanging there.

I really like this piece - simple, functional and elegant. The only change I would incorporate is to make some of the shelves adjustable. Another project to add to the list!
@bjornolson6527
@bjornolson6527 Месяц назад
That adjustable shelf idea is “do-able”; a sensible & functional complication 😅 Is it still “in your list”? It’s added to mine!! 😊🎉 I’ll likely use a mostly clear pine, and clear/natural/danish-oil finish. 👍

Notice at 10:16 that Norm had to remember that the switch for the new Unisaw is in a slightly different spot from where the old one was.

He planed both sides in the beginning. Don't you need to flatte. One side first? A planer just makes uniform thickness. Guess that was totally flat to begin with?
@seacitadel
@seacitadel 5 месяцев назад
It's called skip planing. If the material is already more or less uniform in thickness, or if absolute perfect thickness/flatness is not necessary, it can just be run straight through the planer.

QUESTION: Why is it called a chimney cupboard?
@leavemealoneandgoaway

Norm should come out of retirement on RU-vid. Do some episodes at his age today. Change the name from the new yankee Workshop. Now call it the old yankee Workshop. There is so much things to build in norms golden years. I like to see Norm build a fish tank stand, sailboat again, wood hand tools, more Furniture, even wood puzzle boxes. Norm the kids of yesterday are now grown up like me. That's still look up to you today for wisdom. Please bring back the series on RU-vid.

Let’s take a moment to talk about shop safety. Be sure to read, understand and follow all the safety rules that come with your power tools. Knowing how to use your power tools properly will greatly reduce the risk of personal injury. And remember this: There is no more important safety rule than to wear these safety glasses.

It's amazing the amount of effort people will put in to keep their wood looking like crap. At least he didn't use pocket screws.
