Norm spies this beautifully proportioned double dresser in a private collection of antique pine furniture in Napa Valley. This six-drawer desk is long but narrow, making it versatile enough for a hallway and other small spaces, as well as for a bedroom. Norm crafts his version of the design out of recycled pine, complete with recessed side panels, banded drawer fronts and wooden knobs.

I made this back in the day when the series was being aired. It turned out fabulous. A great project for advancing your skill levels.

These Season 8 Napa Valley episodes bring back great memories - outstanding projects AND a warm reminder of California back in the day while living in Marshfield Massachusetts Winter. By 1996, Delta stationary tools, Porter Cable power hand tools and the Leigh Jig dominated The New Yankee Workshop. As always, great tools, techniques and teachings by Norm. Again, thanks for the memories and great projects brought back to us all in 2023 by Russ and Crew!

I'm 45+ years into carpentry. Seeing Norm bonking on the wood with his hands makes me think about the hows and whys every joint in my body aches.

Great project. A dresser seems so intimidating. But breaking it down like this makes it more attainable.

2:07 it seems hard to believe Norm would ever do that given his Yankee thrift...

I don't remember Norm being such a fan of flawed wood.

I dont think you understand the difference between pine you find in a hardware store and old growth pine that he used.

It's not flawed. It has character. 😉 Also, he done quite a few projects where he used reclaimed lumber. Which is brilliant since the quality of lumber from reclaimed sources is far superior than you can get from retail sources these days, "flaws" and all.

ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT, what did Norm do with his prototype units that he made?

Often Russ and Norm would donate pieces to local charities to auction off and raise money. You might even find a Norm Abram signature in a drawer 😀

I'm curious how necessary it is to have separate outer and inner end vertical frames. It seems to me that this cabinet is going to be a lot heavier than necessary because each end has a 3/4" plywood frame and a 3/4" pine panel frame at each end. Why have the extra weight, expense, and effort?

Something I never noticed before on this project, when gluing up the panels and sliding in the hardboard there was something white attached to the underside of one of the cut hardboard inserts? Wonder what that was? Was it a sticker of some sort? 🤷‍♂️ wonder if Norm ever noticed it? Maybe it’s still on dresser? 😆

It's just a pricing label. He either didn't notice it or didn't care to remove it since it is under the drawer and no one is likely to see it (other than all the people who watch the show).

Before we use any power tools, let’s take a moment to talk about shop safety. Be sure to read, understand, and follow all the safety rules that come with your power tools. Knowing how to use your power tools properly will greatly reduce the risk of personal injury. And remember this: There is no more important safety rule than to wear these, safety glasses.
