Illegal chimpanzee trade is a significant issue, driven by the pet and animal circus industries, often involving brutal methods and resulting in many deaths. Pet owners eventually realize that chimps become too strong and difficult to manage in human environments. The organization HELP Congo has been combating this trade and habitat loss through a reintroduction program in the Conkuati-Douli National Park, Republic of Congo. They successfully reintroduced captive-raised chimpanzees into the wild, where these chimps adapted, formed social structures, and were tracked for study. Primate behavior, including cooperation, territoriality, and future planning, is a major research focus, revealing insights into both chimp and human evolution.
