China’s Proposal for a Tunnel to Hainan

China is considering building a 12 billion dollar tunnel to the island of Hainan. In the south of China, the island of Hainan is separated from the mainland by the thin, 20 kilometer wide Qiongzhou strait. The island hosts 10 million people and a booming tourism industry. Despite this, currently, there are no connections across it. For this reason, the idea of building a tunnel across the strait is being seriously pursued. A tunnel would increase tourism on the island, remove transport congestion, and provide China with a strategic advantage in the South China Sea. However, the idea also has several issues, including environmental damage, cost concerns and earthquakes. Nevertheless, Wu Shicun and other Chinese officials are promoting the project and trying to get it built by 2033.

For a country that seems to have few reservations spending large sums of money on huge infrastructure projects (mega tall skyscrapers, high speed rail, man made islands in the South China sea, etc) I doubt cost alone would ever be seen as a permanent detractor for a project that has the ability to physically connect a major province with the mainland. I have an idea which maybe increase the safety of submerged floating tunnel: first we build a large tube, then we build a smaller tube inside it. The area between the large tube and the small tube we fill it with some jelly-like materials. If there is earthquake, the jelly-like layer absorb most of the damage, which can at least protect the small tube. Even if the small tube was broke, the jelly-like layer reduce the leakage speed within the small tube, which allows people inside to evacuate.

seems pretty silly for hainan to be an international shipping port when in order to leave the island goods have to be loaded onto ships again. i think it's inevitable that a link will be build eventually but i would like to see it soon rather than later, but that's just because it's exciting to see this stuff. The fact that the straight is hit both by tropical storms as well as earthquakes, making both bridges and tunnels impractical, would make it a good candidate to build the first undersea floating tunnel which would be amazing to see. But it might be too early to put an untested idea to the test with such a major project, catastrophic failure certaunly wouldn't look good.

China is not a pure capitalist country, it's a country with a mixture of central planned economy and market economy combined. So, you can not explain China economy with the Western Economics. China has built 39,000 km high speed railway since 2011. The average investment per km high speed railway is about 17 to 21 million US $, but every 100 million U.S. dollars of investment has driven the surrounding economic growth of 180 million U.S. dollars, not to mention the employment and industrial ecology that it drives. That is the reason you can see the big difference of infrastructure between China and US.

High speed train network in China is very successful and used with a very high rate by the population. Unlike individual societies in Western world who prefers cars, collective Chinese population likes using public transportation incl. high speed trains. This tunnel project will bring a lot potential for tourism in Hainan and will be a good alternative to expensive flights to Hainan.

as an american living in china i really like what these guys do in terms of infrastructure. i live in a 3rd tier city rizhao in shandong. when i got here in 2013 it was a mess. mostly villages. my wife was born in 1990 and she remembers when there were no roads here. theyve done a hell of a job modernizing that it puts my native brooklyn to shame. i saw my apartment being built. i live on the 29th floor, i remember when this area was all villages. when i got here people were living in sub standard housing in many places. now theyre living better than people from my native bushwick, brooklyn. those apartments are made of brick and wood, built in the 1930's and cost about 2k a month to liv in those crappy railroad apartments. the average apartment here is 3 bedrooms with heated floors made of reinforced steel and concrete.

Love the idea but no one bothered to mention the nuclear submarine base deep beneath the island. Hainan Island's hollowed-out interior resembles a scene from a James Bond movie. With berths for at least 15 submarines, five of which are nuclear, armed with 16 intercontinental ballistic missiles [ICBMs] the island commands the entrance to the South China Sea.

The Chinese Chunnel. And what is more important is the freight, not the carrying of people. Look at the economics of the Chunnel. People are transported, but it is the freight that is much more important. If the tunnel would also support high speed train, it would require additional lines since freight is what would justify the project. And if you just pushed a traditional line like in the Chunnel, then the high speed rail could be completed only if it made sense. China in the past has shown a willingness to put in infrastructure that was not economically justified to ensure a unified country. Chunnel traffic in 2016: 138 billion euros. Considered critical in Just in Time and Just in Sequence production.

A floating tunnel might be the best idea in terms of the fault lines. It would also be more useful for semi-trucks, and cars that way a high-speed rail network won't need to be built. I'm also sure that certain steps can be taken to further protect the wildlife of the island from increased tourism and a larger human population. Hainan would also be a great location for international or regional diplomacy. It would be seen as a better place for intermediation as it is not located on the Chinese mainland and yet it is relatively close to many other Southeast Asian nations. As for the US, I highly doubt the US would declare war over it. Making Hainan into a large military and naval base just strategically makes sense, no matter how you feel about the South China Sea. I'm willing to acknowledge that as an American patriot. A tunnel and military base would certainly be alarming for the USA, Taiwan and their allies, but I doubt they would do anything about it. The US and its allies would want China to do something offensively first, like invade a Taiwanese, Japanese, Filipino or Vietnamese island, before committing to military action.
