Japan’s Proposal for a Tunnel to Korea

Japan is considering constructing a $170 billion tunnel to South Korea, connecting itself to all of mainland Asia and beyond. A tunnel from Japan to Korea is very feasible and would have massive economic and political incentives. It would improve trade and connectivity between Japan and Eurasia, improve cooperation between South Korea and Japan, and serve as a feat of engineering. However, it does come with several major issues, including its enormous cost.

It could theoretically work if Korea re-unified or they could do a system like done in Germany when people had to travel through East Germany to travel between West Berlin and West Germany. @@dbclass4075 Water freight is still cheaper, but it's slower, especially if it's not direct. I'm always a little surprised by how negative people are on these game-changing projects. If Korea can get integrated into the Chinese rail network (and Japan even more so) that will have hugely positive ramifications for trade, industry, connection and diplomacy for the whole Northeast Asia region. Really, the money is the only real problem-and it's a short term one.

Aside from the immediate environmental impact and upfront cost this project would probably prove to be a smart investment into the future. It also proves that Japan is incredibly tone deaf in its policy towards South Korea. Formal apologies for war crimes, sexual exploitation, destruction or relocation of cultural artefacts are seldom forthcoming. As these grievances happened until 1945 there are still survivors and while trade with Japan is a necessity for South Korea the overall public opinion of Japan especially in recent years has been very low. With multiple large disputes in the last 5 years (territorial disputes over some tiny islands, the half-assed apologies to the comfort women, the rewriting of history that takes place in Japanese schools, Japan refusing to pay reparations to workers exploited under their rule instead choosing to restrict the delivery of important semi-conductor components to South Korea, which resulted in Korean consumers shunning Japanese products, the fallout over the common intelligence program and so on...). The South Korean government that approves this project (which essentially is historically linked to Imperial Japan looking to connect its colony to the Japanese 'mainland') is going to face large protests and can probably forget about winning another election anytime soon. Japan should first and foremost seek to build an honest eye to eye relationship with South Korea, this would cost comparatively very little and would open up possibilities for future cooperation and a tighter connection between the two countries.

For Japan, a more realistic and cost-effective agreement with Russia and the construction of a tunnel to Sakhalin is the connection of that island with mainland Russia, then the connection of Japan with the Trans-Siberian Railway.

Cost effective, except for the fact there is no railway between Sakhalin and the rest of Russia, and connecting the Sakhalin railways to the rest of Russia would probably be more expensive. In addition, there would most likely be less economic incentive due to Japan and Korea being significantly important trading partners compared to Russia. In addition, the Russian Far East isn't a massively developed or economically powerful region, and using the railway to travel all the way to Europe or China would be more inconvenient.

There aren't really benefits from building a tunnel from S. Korea to Japan aside from symbolism of neutral understanding and small business profits. Maybe Japan will be interested after S. From Japan I think some people have a misunderstanding. Between 1930s and 1942, Japan had a plan for the tunnel because Korea was part of Japan at that time. Of course Japan dropped this plan when the war ended. In 1981, a new tunnel plan was proposed by some Korean civilian organizations including the Korean Unification Church. Thereafter, some politicians of Japan and Korea had meeting several times. And, for example, in 2009, Korean President Lee Myung-Bak showed a tunnel research scheme. But the Japanese government is almost completely unconcerned about this plan since at least 2005. Perhaps current Korean government too. At present, only some Japanese pro-Korea politicians, some Korean pro-Japan politicians, and the Korean Unification Church are positive about the plan.

If you look at the Korean point of view, constructing the tunnel would mostly benefit Japan, especially if North Korea agrees on a treaty to connect a tunnel going throughout itself onto the main continent of Asia. That is why many Korean citizens are hesitant about this proposition.
@liamnixon4428
@liamnixon4428 Год назад
Yeah, as if North Korea would ever agree to that. Besides, there are some views that say that South Korea could see some major benefits that outstrip Japan's, like an economic growth past 100%, so there are differing angles to this.

As a Korean myself, I think the Koreans commenting here are extremely shortsighted. Integrating Japan to South Korea will give everyone in the region mire economic incentive to connect North Korea to South Korea, which will increase the likelihood of reunification. Reunification solves the demographic crises we will face in 10 years. It will probably be less destabilizing than trying to get mass immigration into SK. Creating strong economic ties that are balanced among these multiple economic powerhouses will also help de-escalate the tensions in the region. Sitting behind your keyboard and just reciting government fed ignorant anti-Japanese propaganda like parrots will create a bleak future for SK. Sure it’d be nice if Korean people can feel like they’ve received a proper apology. But I’d much prefer a stronger economy and a brighter future. Complaining about the Japanese government won’t feed you.
