I test drove a Premium the other day and I was very very impressed, as much so that I made further enquires with my work about terminating my current lease early and taking up a lease on a BYD Sealion 6 Premium and the answer was yes. My current drive is the Mitsubishi Outlander (full petrol) and I came from a Rav 4 Cruiser Hybrid to that, this was due to wait times on another Rav 4 (2 years at the time). Taking my wife for a look tomorrow and then we’ll make a decision, however I’m already convinced and I recon in a few weeks I’ll be cruising in my NEW BYD Sealion 6. 🤗
@@waynewhite6355 yeah, your impression will be flipped 180 degrees when selling. Get a portable defibrillator and 2 paramedics nearby when you visit the used car dealership
Don't be in a rush to end your novated lease as early termination is very expensive. Furthermore, if you wait a few more months, the Sealion 7 will come out and it makes more sense than the 6. Why would you pay for an entire ICE drive train that you only fuel up twice a year and has the exact same range as the Haval H6 Ultra hybrid but costs an additional $10k?
I'm from the Philippines and bought a BYD Sealion 6 Dmi for Php 1,548,000 ($40,691 Australian Dollars). It is an awesome car wirh an insane price! We actually bought two ha ha ha 😊. An arctic white and azure blue. The dealer also gave us the 7Kw wall chargers for free, aside from the portable chargers ... fantastic!
I saw an arctic white in one of the restaurant parking lots in Perth recently and it was stunningly beautiful. If not for the fact that I have already got an Atto 3 from BYD one and a half year ago, I would definitely go and get the BYD sea lion.
@@yslee1401I certainly hope for you that you were not writing out of your own terribly sad experience of selling your past used Non-BYD vehicles. Non-BYD? Because from your comment, you would never own one anyway!
the cheapest BYD PHEV sells for $15,000 in China and this car sells for $25000 in China so no it's not too cheap in Australia. they are actually making good money. This is what happens when you own the whole supply chain from battery to components to smelter to LCD screens.
The additional price increase might not be due to BYD but costs from sea freight, import tax and dealer mark-up. The Australian distributor is a local franchise and not part of BYD company.
@@yslee1401How do you know that? Is it from rumours or your own experience? A used car can be chosen to be sold in low price for willing buyer and even that it still has value, albeit low, isn't it? So, what do you mean by no resale value?

I have had the sealion 6 premium for 4 weeks and traveled 1726 km. I have used 336 kWh and 10 litres. I have an 8c tariff with ovo so $27 in electricity and $23 in petrol. So $50 for 1726 km. For comparison a RAV4 would go 417 km for $50 assuming $2 per litre and 6l/100km
Definitely a better purchase than the expensive outdated RAV 4 hybrids. However, your real competition is the Haval H6 Ultra Hybrid as it has the exact same range for $10k less. Yes, 1700km in that car would cost $160 in fuel, not $50. However, the $10,000 saving left in the mortgage offset account would take 13 years before our cars broke even at 10,000km/year. You never have to charge a conventional hybrid, in that time you would have had to charge it at least 141 times/year. PHEVs & EVs simply aren't financially worth it, it's purely for the fun of driving in EV mode. Good on you for being able to enjoy that EV experience for much longer.

For those that don’t know, there’s a very good chance these will be Toyotas new hybrid motors as well and will be used in the next generation Corolla and rav 4s. This is technically, well mechanically speaking, what the new rav 4 will bring to the table. The Corolla will use a 1.5 turbo hybrid motor set-up with bigger battery. This will result in more time in “electric mode” so to speak.
@@iBlogGadget publications from Japanese motor magazines have stipulated 1.5 turbo hybrids motors to be used in the next generation Corolla. Watch Kirk kreifels channel. Pretty much the motor in this sealion 6.
2 seconds in and I'm triggered! This is not China's Rav4 It's BYD. You people need to give BYD credit where it is due. Hence why Toyota are now going to use BYD PHEV Systems. You're better than this Tom!
Great video as always Tom. It would be awesome if you did a comparison of this to the outlander phev to try and derive where that extra value sits (if anywhere...).
For someone who does primarily local driving and only occasional trips over 80kms I often wonder what impact the lack of use of the petrol engine has on its long term performance if, say, it winds up being idle for weeks at a time. We only do road trips about 3 times per year on average but for those road trips an EV can be a little restrictive especially when looking for charging options off the main highway routes so a PHEV seems ideal but we may not need the petrol engine much in between those road trips hence my question above.
When I was looking into the Outlander PHEV, I found out that the system will activate the ICE unit as required to keep things moving. It would have a negligible effect on fuel use overall.
You're basically wasting money on this. A Haval H6 hybrid Ultra has the exact same range for $10k less and you never have to plug it in (bigger boot & more features). Either go conventional hybrid or go full EV. A plug in hybrid doesn't make any sense as you'll be lugging around an extra 500kg if you don't plug it in everyday. If you do plug it in everyday, why do you need that petrol tank and ICE drive train to maintain and lug around? Just go full EV with the Sealion 7 due to come out around Christmas and only charge it once a fortnight instead of every second day.

Thanks for the review Tom. It's understandable that this car accounted for half of BYD's sales in August. However, *a significant limitation of the BYD Sealion 6 is the payload: only 410kg!* Once you put 5 people on board, or even just 4 adults, you have little capacity to carry any luggage.
