Beijing opera flourished through experiments at the beginning of 20th century. Mei Lanfan, the greatest female role performer, modified the costumes,makeups and produced plays with modern themes. He not only inherited but also brought the traditional arts up to a new level. Nowadays, artists are not experimenting enough. Only a few plays are performed constantly. Many are neglected and there are few new operas written. Even though this art form is not dying, it is lacking in dynamic.
