China's economy beats expectations to grow 5.3% in first quarter

China's plans to boost growth by pouring money into factories has begun to show results. The economy grew faster than expected in the first three months of the year, mainly thanks to strong investment in high-tech manufacturing. GDP in the first quarter climbed 5.3%. But, with subdued domestic demand and a lingering property crisis, the latest figures have also reinforced the scenario of an uneven recovery in the world's second-largest economy. Olivia Siong reports.

Despite orchestrated Western propaganda, China’s economy will continue to outperform. The most popularly adopted, and comprehensive scorecard of a country’s economic health is GDP (short for gross domestic product). It is the total monetary value of all the finished goods and services produced within the country. Growth or contraction in the economy is measured by the change in GDP at constant price. And the function that relate to and affect the changes in GDP are government spending, domestic consumption, investment, and net exports (or exports minus imports). In a close economy where a country does not trade with another country, then technically, its government can print an unlimited amount of money to finance its expenditure. But in the real world, no country’s economy is truly “close” as such. Because no country can produce everything it needs. Hence, its ability to print money is limited by its net exports. In other words it must be able to sustain its balance of payments without the risk of its currency being devalued, or become worthless. But since the end of Bretton Wood in the early ‘80s, the US became the only country that enjoys the advantage of not having to worry about printing too much money. That is because the US dollar became the de facto premier reserve currency, and the primary medium for international trade settlement. For fiscal 2023, U.S. public debt had increased by $2.239 trillion from a year earlier (at $30.928 trillion) to $33.167 trillion. In other words, deficit government spending accounted for a staggering 8.2% of 2023 U.S. GDP of $27.36 trillion While deficit spending has artificially inflated the U.S. economy, it is not without its flip side, as it fuelled inflation and erode real incomes. China on the other hand, continues to register a trade surplus (net exports) of 5.24 trillion yuan ($823 billion)in 2023. And given its high domestic savings and the total deposits of 284.18 trillion yuan ($39.85 trillion) in its banking system, technically, China too is placed in an enviable position to ramp up its government spending without the fear of unwarranted pressure on its currency. Be that, China had elected to a benign deficit of 3.9% of its $17.701 trillion economy, and keeping inflation in check. Which economy is more resilient? The fact speaks for itself.

"How would a slowdown in the People’s Republic of China affect its trading partners".Asia and the Global Economy Volume 1, Issue 2, July 2021. The People’s Republic of China (PRC) has become an important importer for many countries. Exports from several East and Southeast Asian countries to the PRC exceed 10% of their GDPs. The results indicate that Chinese Tapei and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations are exposed to the PRC because they produce goods for the Chinese market and exposed to advanced economies because they ship parts and components to the PRC for processing and re-export to the West. South Korea is more exposed to a slowdown in advanced economies that purchase processed exports from the PRC than to a slowdown in the PRC. Major commodity exporters such as Australia, Brazil, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia and exporters of sophisticated consumption and capital goods such as Germany and Switzerland are exposed to a slowdown in the Chinese domestic market. The results indicate that imports for processing into the PRC are closely linked to processed exports from China to the rest of the world and that ordinary imports are closely linked to Chinese GDP.
