After the world found petroleum, all interest in other energy sources for EVERYTHING pretty much ended. Battery technology was stagnant for decades and decades. As a kid in the 70s that blew through Alkaline batteries as fast as a box of Froot Loops, I welcome batteries with 1000 w/hr densities, that charge in 30 seconds, and cost .45 cents. That way I can watch reruns of Thundarr the Barbarian and Sigmond and the Sea Monsters on my new iPad years from now, for weeks at a time, without recharging! That was my dream as a child, and it is still near to my heart.

Your comment can become a topic of another video. There's so much to analyze here! The first thing to realize is that the feverish gold rush on EVs produced these often fantastic sounding discoveries. It's a bonanza. And now imagine that in this environment you want to develop one certain way of producing these innovated batteries: yes you can build a large factory for this technology, the equipment will all have to be developed with high cost of course, you plan for the equipment to be amortized over 10 years, and at the moment when the production starts, there is another invention 5x better! This of course robs your factory of the possibility to have the equipment amortized over 10 years, as it is obsolete at the moment when a competing 5x better invention hits the market. So, not all of these inventions will be realized of course. At the same time, thinking about the economic forces behind factory production is one thing, but quite another is comparison to ICE engines and their rate of progress: if any of the ICE engine manufacturers improves efficiency or price over the current best benchmark by more than a single %, it would be world news. I just saw (on this channel) a video titled that Mercedes Benz is investing $15billion into their new ICE engine! What improvement % they expect out of this? They must be lunatics. That industry is dead in the water now, and people saying that EVs are expensive are simply repeating old news, while we are watching their price going under the price of comparable ICE cars. But it takes a few years before this sinks into the minds of majority people who are not interested in these revolutionary developments. They probable digest this information only when the aircrafts they travel with will be run by batteries, and that is still some years away.

Never mind solid state - One thing is true - there are mass produced affordable vehicles in China (and they are very good high-tech items) that run on Sodium (salt) batteries. We in the West are being fed a diet of made-up stuff and drivel by the legacy auto funded media.
@carrievh8686

A lot of the news is not necessarily hype, it is that the news is about a result in university. The result in the university is real, but usually there is a long lag between a university lab and mass production--more than a decade generally--to solve the issues with mass production and to control costs for commercialization. The result: By the time these miracle technologies make it into a product, it is no longer new and hyped--something else is making the news--, making real technology that significantly improve products seem like hype when they are perfectly real.

CATL named their new battery the "Condensed Matter" battery, later shortened to just "Condensed." Condensed Matter Physics is the modern name for Solid State Physics, which enabled the invention of the transistor. As you say, we'll see in a few years if this makes it to production. As CATL have what sounds like a great product already in production, and the likes of Toyota keep making promises that they have for the best part of a decade, failed to deliver, while also claiming hydrogen is the future, then I'll go with CATL, when it comes to banking on genuine progress. CATL keep delivering. As a side note, I am still enjoying my 8 year old Model S (262,000 mile). I'd like to think that if I keep hold of it, then at some point in the future (2-5 years?), I will have the option to buy a replacement battery that weighs less, goes further and charges faster. Effectively giving my car a new lease of life. I realise this would also need either Tesla or an independent supplier, giving the car the relevant software update to run the new battery, but it should be doable.

China is playing the US at its own game, basically, by the US trying to restrict what can and can't be imported into the US, China is getting around that by being a lot more aggressive on pricing, this is a big deal because the world is a big market that a lot of it doesn't follow the US vision on China. It also means that if the US does restrict products from China that are a lot cheaper, that's giving the advantage to countries that don't restrict them. If China is smart, they will target the tech sector, especially Nvidia, AMD, Intel and others in that space that have becoming way too greedy the last few years, there's a massive opening for an alternative, even if the product isn't quite as good, if it's a lot cheaper, a lot of consumers will flock in that direction, just as we are starting to see with many industries from China like Solar and EV cars, basically, China has seen the weakness of the west and especially the US, which is greed, by targeting that, it's very easy to gain market share fast as China are showing in many sectors. I know some will say we should buy western products and I would, but with how greedy some are getting, if China offers an alternative of high quality and much lower price point, I would be stupid to not jump, and that I suspect is what most of the world thinks. China is likely going to continue to be aggressive on pricing in one sector after another because it's working for them at a time when the US is trying to keep China down because of other geopolitical reasons, basically, as long as there is enough countries around the world that's willing to buy products from China that are much cheaper than western products, then China wins by default and if the west is smart, they'll stop being so greedy, otherwise, China is going to eat there lunch, one sector after another as they are already showing, which will be fun to watch in the high-tech sector where they've really got greedy in the west, especially the US, and to put it another way, it doesn't matter if the US bans there products, if other countries are buying them, that's giving there consumers a big advantage in savings compared to US consumers, so the US can only go so far on that unless there corporations are willing to slash prices aggressively, fat chance of that lol.
@Lt_Tim
@Lt_Tim 14 дней назад
The Chinese government artificially keeps the price of their currency low, so that they have an advantage in the cost to produce anything. Whether they are greedy or not, companies can't produce items as cheaply in the US as they can in China, especially in places like California that mandate $20 per hour for unskilled jobs. If the US really wants to control China, we'll continue to bring the high-tech, higher-paying manufacturing jobs back to the US and invest in producing the low-tech stuff in all the countries south of the US. This will give them something they can export besides people and drugs. It will also reduce the cost to ship and the time it takes to get products to the US. As those countries develop, they will eventually draw manufacturing away from China.

Uh semi solid state cells already can cut off 30% or more in pack weight alone. Example welion semi solid state cells in the nio et7 150kwh pack weighs a mere 44# more than the catl nmc 100kwh pack does for the same size case going in the same vehicle! So 50% more capacity for a pack level energy density gain of over 43% And a weight gain of 44# or about 20kgs. 😎 Imagine the tesla semi with it's 915kwh pack weighing nearly 9,000# dropping down to 6,000# for the same useable pack capacity. Or a tesla model S or X plaid dropping 350-450# off it's pack weight which would reduce the cars total weight by 6-9% A model 3 perf could go from 4,050# down to about 3,700 with a semi solid state pack! A base m3 rwd could drop down to 3,500# 😎

i used to drive a truck for a living (not very long - 3 months). the company that i worked for said doing 400-450 miles per day as a pro trucker was a good distance. -having said that, i wonder whether the same applies to cars? in other words, most people would never drive more than 400-500 miles per day, which means that EVs could be equipped with "lesser" battery packs that might give cars 600 miles of range rather than 1000 miles of range? -this would cut the price of the pack and still provide enough range to do 400-500 miles per day provided countries implement good charging networks. -would probably also be quicker charging? anyway, just thinking from a "standard trucking practice" perspective.... thoughts?

Indeed the first cars batteries based on Acid-Lead or NiCD or NiMh may not have been practical or economical but improvements in overall chemistry and manufacturing have made made today's EV based on Lithium a reality. Cost is crucial. If they can make a product as good as CATL but way cheaper, then it's needed. When I was a kid, I used to watch a TV show in the UK called tomorrow's world. The dream of this show was that future people would have abundance, not have to work, and the environment would be maintained by machines. I loved it. That technology almost exists now, but people with power will always try to exploit. Imagine a green, clean earth maintained by fully renewable machines where nobody had to starve or suffer. It's a utopia that we will never reach, but we should keep chasing it so we don't end up with the opposite.

@Sam: light weight and low cost with added safety will always win. If that will ultimately be the solid state battery remains to be seen, you are right, but we need to explore many alleys to find the best solution. Imagine the SS battery goes through the same development as LiFePO4 and hits 1kWh / kg at cost per kWh competitive to LiFePO4. That will disrupt trucking and aviation, never mind cars... We need to look at this with the long term in perspective. It took more than 20 years to develop the PV panels we have today and the cost for producing them keeps dropping. The lab says it is possible, Elon is right to say that the mastery of producing it at an industrial scale with very low cost is the hardest. Today we see the advantages of that industrial development, the lab stuff was proven decades ago. Real progress hits the market when the cost is right. Only then. And that is why this video is encouraging, it says the Chinese have proven to slash cost by one degree of magnitude (10x) ... in the lab. But also it says current industrial processes to make these at scale is not too far out either. My guess is we need another 5 years. For people watching your channel that seems like an eternity. Because you hit them with 10 news items every day. It is all perception.

China's biggest electric-car maker, BYD, has agreed a $1bn (£780m) deal to set up a manufacturing plant in Turkey, as it continues to expand outside its home country. The new plant will be able to produce up to 150,000 vehicles a year, according to Turkish state news agency Anadolu. The facility is expected to create around 5,000 jobs and start production by the end of 2026. The deal was signed at an event in Istanbul attended by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and BYD's chief executive Wang Chuanfu. BYD did not immediately respond to a BBC request for further details on the deal. The announcement comes as Chinese EV makers face increasing pressure in the European Union and the US. Last week, the EU took action to protect the bloc's motor industry by raising tariffs on Chinese EVs. The decision saw BYD hit with an extra tariff of 17.4% on the vehicles it ships from China to the EU, which was on top of a 10% import duty. Turkey is part of the EU’s Customs Union, which means vehicles made in the country and exported to the bloc can avoid the additional tariff.

Lithium-sulfur batteries, which are still under development, have the potential to be cheaper than lithium-ion batteries due to sulfur being an abundant and low-cost material. The high cost of lithium-sulfur batteries currently lies in the challenges researchers are trying to overcome to make them commercially viable. This is cool, IF it gets past the R&D phase into real production. As for the goal of 1,000 miles of range, I personally would rather have 300 miles of range, with a much smaller battery pack. Most reporting shows that EV owners only use about 12% of their current pack capacity per day. And most EV owners recharge to full overnight at home. So I would rather NOT carry around 1200lbs of battery that I don't use. Lighter weight has many more benefits for daily driving than extreme range.
