I’m in Australia, I work for car dealer that sells Ford, GM, Jeep and Chinese BYD. I can tell you straight-up. The Chinese are building better cars than the USA.
My Ford Lincoln is one year old and been in dealer repair 5 times. Changed catalytic converter 3 times, one time battery, one time engine valve. I'm f'ed after warranty.
A lot of people fail to understand that being able to build the same car at lower cost is the same as being able to build a better car at the same cost. Car buyers don't just buy the cheapest car on the market, car buyers start with a price then look for the best car for that price People buy Chinese cars not because they're cheap, it's because they're the highest quality car in the buyer's price range.
When the United States produces competitive products, like the semiconductor chips, it is considered acceptable; however, when Chinese products, like the electric cars, become competitive, it is often criticized as merely exporting surplus capacity.
Thirty years ago, the US advocated "globalization" because US manufacturing was in an advantage. Thirty years later, the US advocated "de-globalization" because US manufacturing was at a disadvantage. Such double standards are shameless.
Chinese EV companies are building factories in Hungry, South America, etc. The capacity is now outside China and China is exporting "surplus technology"
Cheaper price is fine as long as they aren't being subsidized by the government to make it artificially cheaper. That along with China dumping their inventory abroad due to their excess production, governments are going to protect their own auto production by putting tariffs and hitting them dumping duties.
@@Nabrolo So the US subsidizing the farming industry, the auto industry ($7500 tax rebate, clean energy rebate ...etc) and most of all the microchip industry with $50 billion dollar incentives to build factories locally is ok?
Why are the prices of Chinese cars so low? Because China is the most competitive market for cars in the world. All cars in the world need to compete in China. Therefore, industrial advantages have gradually formed. But more and more Western countries are using protectionism, which has led to What comes is not competition but protection.
Why our carmakers have to the US even US have so many sentiments? huh just like someone does not want a relationship but someone else keeps trying to, it’s like a sexual harassment?
Oh yeah sure.. subsidies, you mean like the IRA? Every country subsidizes their core industries, but the fact is that even with subsidies you can't compete with the Chinese.. that's why there's a 27.5% tariff. As Elon Musk said, without protectionism, Chinese EVs will pretty much demolish most legacy automakers. But putting up shields up maybe help you in the short term, but in the long run you lose.
BMW got to capitalize the costs in China's largest BMW production. The US union costs and Bidenomics inflation wouldn't help to gain productivity.. just a bunch of ra ra sanctions because of Ukraine and Russia breached our value bla bla bla thanks Democrats woke voters

Now if only China wouldn't do that. All phones over there have to be equipped with software that allows the CCP to track you and even watch what you are doing. I'd suspect any Chinese car would be equipped with the same software camera technology that can be activated at the will of the CCP.
In Australia, I see BYDs, Havals, and MGs all over the place. They have caught on FAST. I can't speak on their quality, but the US trying to restrict Chinese car sales absolutely reeks of the Japanese auto crisis in the 70s. America learned to compete back then, it can learn again. Hard to blame the tech when the Chinese cars have it too... What they don't have is useless executives with bloated salaries draining their profits. Meanwhile the big 3 pin it on their workers that account for about 3-5% of their vehicle cost.
When they first came to the USA, Hyundai and Kia managed to sell quite a few cars despite objectively terrible quality forcing Hyundai to offer a 10-year bumper-to-bumper warranty. Since the, Hyundai and Kia have gotten a lot better, to being adequate or average. The current Chinese cars are "good enough" if not "good".
When I visited China late last year I had the pleasure of looking at, and riding in, some very nice Chinese made vehicles. The fit, finish, and interiors looked amazing. The comfort and ride quality was very impressive as well. I live in Canada and the political reality here is that our lifestyle is dictated by the US, so our choice of products is politically constrained. Given the option, I would definitely consider purchasing a Chinese vehicle. I started driving Japanese made products in the late 70s and I have driven mostly Japanese made cars since then. I have only purchased three American made vehicles since that time, but I could definitely see that their quality was lacking so I sold them after a couple of years. I would really like to see economical, Chinese made EVs enter Canada. This would provide a viable, cost effective option for the masses, much like Honda Civic did in the 70s. Even with current issues related to cilmate control and range, an inexpensive EV would meet the primary concerns of some and provide a second car option for others.
I am from chile, where the report was made, and it is true that everyone buys chinese vehicles, before they bought ford, or chevrolet, now they buy changan, dongfeng, geely, haval, and the same thing happens with trucks, before there were many international, kenworth, Freightliner, now companies buy Sinotruk, Jac, Foton trucks, here the public transport in large cities, are Chinese BYD brand electric buses.
Chinese cars are not just affordable in price. They have good features and quality. If you look at Korean or Japanese cars, their base models are just skeleton. But the Chinese base models are already loaded with features. And given China is so good at manufacturing, the features are quite high quality in feels and in operation. What is missing from the report is that, Chinese car engines are quite good. Chinese car companies, knowing people are concerned about their long-term performance, offer 7 years guarantees. That is another key factor that Chinese cars can get established those market so quickly. Nowadays, people don't worry about Chinese car qualities. It looks good, feels good, drives good, and is backed 7 years guarantee.

Times have really changed. More than 30 years ago, my family in China had two cars at that time, which were just bicycles. Everyone is discussing that every household in the United States has a car. Maybe China will never develop like the United States, so how to park? Will the traffic jam last a day? 20 years ago, the German Volkswagen Group's Santana sold nearly 300,000 RMB per car in China. Everyone is talking about how only rich people can own cars. They are envious of Americans, Japanese and Europeans who can buy cars at very cheap prices. They are so happy. Ten years ago, almost most families in China owned real cars. This time it was not a bicycle, which was unimaginable. However, foreign brand cars were still very popular at that time. Japanese, American, and European brand cars were the benchmark for performance and quality, but they were very expensive, and some cars had to be purchased at a premium. At that time, although Chinese brand cars were cheap, their product design was The quality is inferior. Everyone is discussing when our Chinese brand cars will be cheap and as good as American, Japanese and European cars. Now! Chinese brand cars have really done it! Prices of European, American, and Japanese brand cars in China are greatly reduced! ! can not imagine! ! ! China's car prices have now become the cheapest market in the world after high-tech digital products. You see, Tesla model 3 and Y sold for 300,000rmb in China a few years ago, but now they can be bought for just over 200,000rmb, which is a full 100,000rmb cheaper. . So amazing! Fake news. when they say BYD will surpass Tesla in sales, in fact BYD has already surpassed Tesla now. And then when these reporters said BYD needs to satisfy their factory capacity so BYD will have to export to those markets in Australia etc. In actuality it is the other way around: BYD sees there are potentials in those markets so they build new factories in anticipation of explosion of demands for their cars.

China has the best workers and manufacturers, and the Toyota cars produced in China are of the best quality among factories around the world, even in Japan. "Overall, according to statistics, there are about 241 automobile manufacturers in China, of which about 20% are expected to produce less than 1,000 units in 2023, and about 17% of them are expected to produce less than 10,000 units annually". Due to the brutal competion, the car price in China in general is much lower than abroad. For a example: Volkswagen id3 was starting from 15,800 euros in China 2023, and it was 43,995 in Germany, and more than $55,000 in US.

I said it. Whoever makes the cheapest EV will win. It’s not rocket science. China has the advantage because they process the lithium that goes into most EVs. The batteries in American cars comes from China
Yes, trade restriction / protectionism is the answer. Combined with our prowess on FUD and strong influencers such as unions and dealership associations, we can convince US buyers to continue overpaying for the same if not inferior products. Focusing on cost cutting measures (greater efficiency / lower mfg. cost / direct to consumer sales) is too difficult.

The prices of goods and services in China are about 1/4 of that in the US. Although the wages of the Chinese worker are just 1/4 of the US workers, they can still live a decent life. That's why the products made in China can just be 1/4 of the price of US products.
@cnbc what I want to know is why they have the cost advantage? Is it labour? More efficient factory design? Better car design? Less features?Getting away with less regulations? Cheaper parts? More vertically integrated? Government subsidy?
This is the tip of the iceberg. Consider that in China one can buy a four-seater city run-about EV for $2,850 and then pay $20/month for the battery (or pay $4,730 outright). The company making it, is actually a consortium including General Motors of the USA or one can buy the world's most advanced SUV that can do tank turns, can ford rivers and lakes and produces 1200 hp for $150,000.
In fact, $2,850 can't buy a real car in China, only a four-wheeled mobility scooter for the elderly, which the government won't license, so it can only be driven in rural areas. But Chinese cars are really cheap, at the beginning of 2024, nine car companies have announced big price cuts, and the Chinese people are very happy about it. For example, BYD Qin, is a hybrid model, can be refueled can be charged, and now the minimum distribution as long as 11,000 US dollars can be bought, this price is very cheap for Chinese people, the configuration relative to foreign cars is also quite high, and now it is selling very well in China.
